Would you drive or still let your child ride to school in snow

It's stopped snowing but there is snow (and probably ice) on the ground.

On that basis would you still let them ride their bike or would you just drive them in for extra safety ?

If anyone is going to slip and slide off their bike in the snow - a high chance it will be mine!

Driving probably just as risky tbh

ytrf · 12/12/2022 07:24

For the snow on the ground it will only be risky on the side streets until I hit the main roads.

They seem determined to still ride anyway as they would rather go with their friends.

Our school is closed so thankfully we can have a snow day

Florenz · 12/12/2022 07:25

I wouldn't want to ride a bike in this weather. Tell them to walk instead.

TiAmoTiAmo · 12/12/2022 07:27

Don't ride a bike, walk/public transport/car if sensible driver and good well prepped car.

Divebar2021 · 12/12/2022 07:27

I wouldn’t ride my bike personally but walking should be fine

thelobsterquadrille · 12/12/2022 07:28

I wouldn't ride a bike on icy pavements - it's just asking for trouble.

I would send them off on on foot though.
Probably much safer than driving.

emmathedilemma · 12/12/2022 07:29

Neither. Walk or bus.

LolaSmiles · 12/12/2022 07:30

If they're riding on gritted roads and wear a helmet then it's probably ok to ride and be sensible.
If they're going to be all over the pavements with no helmets then that's bad enough at the best of times, but when it's slippy they could hurt themselves or other people, so riding would be silly.

They might as well walk. I wouldn't personally drive just because it's a bit cold.

Mumdiva99 · 12/12/2022 07:30

Walk. Sorry if that isn't feasible due to distance...but walk up to an hour acceptable before school in snow.

PinkHeadphones · 12/12/2022 07:31

DS2 aged 12 is going to walk rather than cycle this morning, I didn’t want him to cycle, will take him 25mins instead of ten
DS1 aged 15 did go out on his bike to do his paper round, after a lot of urging on my part last night to be safe, but the papers didn’t show up so he only cycled to the shop and back in the end.

ytrf · 12/12/2022 08:02

I should have asked the hive mind a little earlier the children and their friends have just set off on their bikes.

I think they'll be ok - it is the tiniest sprinkling of white on the ground and not freezing.

Good to know in future though.

Depends how bad the snow/ice is and what condition the tyres are in. My daughter doesn't cycle when there's snow, she doesn't have winter tyres so its just safer for her to walk. I did the nursery run on my bike when winter first hit and the paths were icy and fell, it was horrible, knocked my confidence completely. Got winter tyres now and biking again but the paths are much better now its packed snow rather than ice (bloody freezing though, my fingers were burning with pain from the cold on the way to nursery today!) but I definitely prefer my daughter to walk in these conditions.

LlynTegid · 12/12/2022 08:31

I'd walk.
