Report neighbours, idling cars on drive

Ginglymostomatidae · 12/12/2022 06:48

Our neighbour has 2 prius cars. Instead of taking then for a drive, he'll turn the car on, and let it idle on the drive for around 15 mins each car. Its always at anti social hours and it wakes us everytime.

This morning he done this at 4.20am and I've been awake ever since and I'm exhausted.

He's done this at 2.45am on a Sunday morning before, and nearly always on a weekday. He WFH.

Would you report? And where?

OP posts:
HarvestThyme · 12/12/2022 06:50

Have you talked to him? Is he unapproachable?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 12/12/2022 06:52

I would go and explain the negative effect it has on you and ask if they can do it in the daytime instead

Vallmo47 · 12/12/2022 06:52

I would post an anonymous letter before reporting, letting them know the next time it’s done during anti social hours (believe this is 11pm-7am?) it will get reported. And then literally report it the next time it happens, no second thought. Sorry Op, what a moron.

MeJane · 12/12/2022 06:55

Who are you going to report that too? It's not 1984. (The book, not the year). It's inconsiderate and it's not environmentally friendly bot it's not against the law.

Or guidelines or rules.

CRbear · 12/12/2022 06:56

Not defrosting the car?

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/12/2022 06:56

Was he de-icing? I had to sit in my car with the window heating on for 10 mins this morning, before it was safe to drive.

Maldedos · 12/12/2022 06:59

I have a Prius.
How do you hear them?
They’re so quiet.
Why not ask him, in a friendly way, what he’s doing up at 4am and why he needs to turn his car on. He probably doesn’t know he’s waking you.

panko · 12/12/2022 06:59

To whom will it be reported?

thelobsterquadrille · 12/12/2022 06:59

If he's not driving anywhere then I would mention it.

But I had to idle mine for 10 minutes yesterday before it was clear of ice and mist and safe to drive, and that was at 9am !

15 minutes idling a car will not be considered anti social.

My thoughts exactly. Although, I do think a lot of people would be absolutely thrilled if it were 🙄

Anonymous notes are horrible and rude. Why wouldn't OP simply speak to her neighbour?

FleasNavidad · 12/12/2022 07:07

Surely he's just defrosting it? Don't post anonymous letters or report it to the imaginary engine idling police because they don't exist

ChessieFL · 12/12/2022 07:08

Am I right in thinking a Prius is an electric car? Maybe he’s on one of those tariffs where electricity is cheaper at night so it’s cheaper for him to do this then? (Never had an electric car so don’t know if this is plausible!). Doesn’t stop it being antisocial though so agree you need to ask him to stop.

Athenen0ctua · 12/12/2022 07:08

He might assume you can't hear it as they are do quiet. Is your bedroom window open?

MintJulia · 12/12/2022 07:08

I have to start my car to de-ice it, to program the sat nav etc. I probably take four or five minutes on a very frosty morning.

Have you asked him? I'd be curious. And a prius is very quiet, Does he slam doors etc?

Cwcwbird · 12/12/2022 07:09

Would people really idle their cars at those unsociable hours to defrost them? I'd use a scraper to be as quiet as possible if it was the mode of the night.

Cwcwbird · 12/12/2022 07:11

Middle of the night that should be

Justcallmebebes · 12/12/2022 07:11

I thought electric cars are silent? Is he idling the engine to defrost the car?

BiasedBinding · 12/12/2022 07:12

Anonymous notes never work, they just get people’s backs up

someone finding an idling engine too loud will definitely find a scraper too loud

is there a reason you don’t feel able to approach him

Ifailed · 12/12/2022 07:13

It is illegal to idle an engine on a public road, but not on private land.

Lozzybear · 12/12/2022 07:23

My old neighbour had a collection of “super cars”. Ferrari, McLaren etc….they make a bloody lot of noise when the engine starts. Always used to wake me up if I was sleep when he started one of them up. Nothing that I could do about it though. No law against turning your car on. I would be happy with a Prius next door. They are much quieter!!!

Electric cars are silent. Charging them from a powerpoint certainly is! Prius are hybrids, so have a petrol engine, which does make noise when run. I can't imagine why someone would want to run the engine at 4am. I thought the engine was only used once the battery ran down.

I use a scraper to make it quicker, but have the engine on while I do. Otherwise the car is free of ice but the windscreen is misted up so it’d be dangerous to drive. I go to work at normal times though, so hopefully it doesn’t annoy the neighbours too much!

I'd be scraping for double the time and that wouldn't be quiet. With the heat full blast it starts to melt a bit and actually come off. Plus I'd still need to wait a bit sitting in the car as my breath would mist it all up otherwise, so still idling a couple of minutes.
