To wonder why LED face masks say gingers can’t use them?

I thought these were suitable for everyone but reading the instructions it says not suitable for fair or red heads with freckles? Is this due to the green light setting? I’ve bought one for me and my sister but she’s a redhead and now wondering if she can’t use it - everything I’ve read says it’s fine for all skin types? Would you keep or send it back?

What's an led face mask 😷 🤔

Ivyonafence · 11/12/2022 22:50

I've never heard of this.

GetOffTheRoof · 11/12/2022 22:51

Natural redheads tend to have very pale skin. Pale skin can be more aggressively damaged by lightwaves etc. Hence why we usually burn much more quickly and severely than other white skinned people.

Obv some people will be different and less prone to burning whilst also being red haired, but the general rule is that we are more vulnerable to burning and skin damage.

I'm ginger, pale, and freckly AF and have been using an LED mask for coming up to 12 months with great results.

Lockheart · 11/12/2022 22:52

If it says it's not suitable for the person you've bought it for then the obvious thing to do is to return it...

Lennon80 · 11/12/2022 22:54

Yes this is my confusion I’m wondering if it’s due to green setting as red light and blue meant to be universally okay for all skin types and I know redheads who use them?

I understand this but there is no UV rays

What is an led mask?!!

GetOffTheRoof · 11/12/2022 23:09

Perhaps it's best to contact the manufacturer then, because what I'm reading suggests it's a standard warning for sensitive and pale skin.

Lennon80 · 13/12/2022 10:15

I can’t find anything that says that?

What's an led face mask 😷 🤔

I believe the facemasks emit different light. Amber light helps stimulate collagen and firm skin’s elastin. Red light reduces inflammation and promotes blood circulation. Blue light kills acne-causing bacteria.

Phototherapy is used in the horse world on horse injuries. Blue is used for its antibacterial properties, red phototherapy is used also for wound management, soft tissue injuries and as a muscle relaxant prior to manual therapy techniques.

coldec · 13/12/2022 10:30

I would send it back because the instructions say it is not suitable for the recipient.

What is an led mask?!!

Ever heard of Google?

DogInATent · 13/12/2022 11:02

It's the UV. Not deliberate UV, so the manufacturers can claim that there's no UV part to the 'treatment'. But accidental UV emitted by the LEDs that isn't being filtered out.

There's a long list of contraindications for most reputable brands I've just looked at, not just gingers.

Lennon80 · 13/12/2022 12:14

Really! Wow I didn’t know this I assumed they were totally safe! Do you have any links? Might send them both back now!

YABU to refer to redheads as "gingers" 🙄

neerg · 13/12/2022 12:18

Anyone else thought we were discussing a covid mask, decorated with led lights and being very confused before a quick Google searchSmileSmile?

RottingAutumnApples · 13/12/2022 12:20

I got one and developed pigmentation in my skin where the mask was closest to my face. I am not a red head but blind and pale.

I am a red head - would have considered risking it my sister also a redhead as is my son and daughter - go listen to the song ‘only a ginger can call another ginger ginger’ Tim Minchin!!

Really!!! You wouldn’t recommend them then! That’s awful

I suppose it is possible some white LEDs might emit higher frequencies of radiation into the UV which might cause damage to peoples skin if it is particularly sensitive.

RampantIvy · 13/12/2022 12:34

I had never heard of LED masks either. I thought it was something for a fancy dress party, so I had a quick google and found this simple explanation

LED light therapy is mainly focused on skincare, promoting anti-aging effects and reducing inflammation. The purported benefits include an increase in the amount of collagen in the skin, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and other stigmata of aging.
