to think people who don't have Smart Meters and who pay monthly or quarterly are going to be in for a shock at their next bill?

Gas has gone up from 4p a kWH this time last year to 10p a kWH this year.
Obviously people with Smart Meters can see this on their display.

But if you still give readings and wait till the bill arrives, I think there are going to be some real surprises. Gas use is at its highest over the next few months.

I know people will have the £66 off their bill - but it's going to be high.

At least with Smart Meters, you can see daily use. Submitting a reading and then getting a statement and bill is going to be a shock for some people.

Is it me or do OP's posts come across as though they want people to get high bills, so they can say 'told you so!'????

liveforsummer · 11/12/2022 18:44

Again, how will it be a shock. It's been one of the biggest news stories since this time last year. You'd have to be living under a rock not to know your gas bill is going to be more than double what it was before?!

Wiccan · 11/12/2022 18:44

Perhaps your thread should have been about poor education in the 18 - 24 age group rather than trying to tell us we are all in for a shock about our energy use , I'm well educated and more than capable of dealing with household management . Cheers .

AutumnCrow · 11/12/2022 18:45

We've tried several times to get a smart meter but British Gas never turn up to install it.

Same here. I gave up after taking two separate days off work. Fuck 'em.

I also switched to Octopus, and submit a monthly reading online and SPIN THE WHEEL!

cakeorwine · 11/12/2022 18:42

There's no need to come on here and act like anyone without a smart meter is a simpleton who doesn't understand electricity

Did you read the OP or just the headline

"But if you still give readings and wait till the bill arrives, I think there are going to be some real surprises. Gas use is at its highest over the next few months"

"Submitting a reading and then getting a statement and bill is going to be a shock for some people"

I've read it. I just still think it comes across as incredibly patronising.

I don't want people to get high bills - but I know we are going to get an increase in calls from people with high bills

I think there are going to be an awful lot of people who've misunderstood the energy cap, and who aren't as astute as the folk on this thread as to energy use and meter readings, who are going to be shocked at their bills, yes.

Someone accused the OP of being patronising. Maybe they were, but equally patronising is the assumption that everyone is as on top of things as you are. I know there's a lot of folk who just aren't, and they'll suffer because of it, unfotunately.

Avrenim · 11/12/2022 18:46

It's very sweet that you're so concerned about those of us who don't think smartmeter technology is always all that accurate. Personally I'll be sticking with the Energenie, taking daily readings, and resorting to all the wartime energy saving tricks my parents passed on to me while growing up in 1970s north east England....

This is about some people.
Not every person who doesn't have a Smart Meter.

I've recently joined Octopus and won £1 off my bill on my first go of the wheel! 😀

No - I know lots of people struggle with bills.

But those people won't be on MN reading these threads in the first place.

You're being v. patronising though.

MyHobbyIsDogging · 11/12/2022 18:46

@cakeorwine I think you're right. You have attracted the scorn of all the clever MNers who know how to read a meter and can do the calculation, but the average intelligence of the Great British Public is pretty low so I suspect there will be lots of people in the "OMG, like how did that happen?" camp.

gamerchick · 11/12/2022 18:47

Is this one of those weird promotions trying to get people to get a smart meter?

Ricco12 · 11/12/2022 18:47

No because I submit my readings to the app monthly and it shows me how much I have used

I can submit readings daily if I wanted to

Absolutely no surprises coming my way Hmm

I pay though quarterly for what I have used

Athenen0ctua · 11/12/2022 18:47

My DGM does not do her own meter readings, one she could but the other is not easily accessible with her walker. I don't know if there are many octogenarians on MN and if she was on here then I doubt this thread would help. If she's cold then she's cold, I can only encourage her to turn down the thermostat a bit and use her electric blanket instead.

OP, you’re coming across as a bit patronising

Quite, it’s hardly a secret that utility bills have all gone up!

OP were not all simpletons you know 🙂I think most people will be well aware of this, with or without a smart meter!

cakeorwine · 11/12/2022 18:49

JRHartley72 · 11/12/2022 18:46

You're being v. patronising though.

Can you explain what you think is patronising?

There are some people out there who submit monthly readings, who pay on receipt of bill and who aren't aware of their energy usage or the reality of the increased price of gas. I think some of those people are in for a shock.

YABU.

We pay monthly and don't have a smart meter. No surprises here, we do monthly meter readings and adjust our use accordingly.

We've tried several times to get a smart meter but British Gas never turn up to install it.

Don't do it . They then have full control over your meter , at least with a manual meter no one can tamper with it.

You are in full control. So many stories of people getting smart meters and suddenly bills rocketing. They can't all be making it up.

I don't trust energy companies what so ever. Stick with your current meter, I doubt it's something you will regret doing. There is no benefit to you , to fit a smart meter only the energy company.

You would have had to have spent the last few months with your head in a bucket of sand to not realise that energy prices have risen .

LjSebs · 11/12/2022 18:51

my company email me every month asking for a meter reading. I log on and supply it and a few hours later I get my ‘bill’. I pay monthly by DD.

I not only don’t have a smart meter but have an old imperial meter 😂.

if people choose not to familiarise themselves with how their bills are calculated (especially after everything on the news for months regarding energy prices), then I’m afraid I find it hard to feel sorry for them if they get an unexpected bill.

Yes, so you keep saying. With the monotony of a Salvation Army drum.

cakeorwine · 11/12/2022 18:53

Maybe I should start a thread saying that people should get a Smart Meter just to see what happens.

OP posts:
fdgdfgdfgdfg · 11/12/2022 18:53

OP, you're getting a lot of grief here because I don't think anyone understands what your're trying to achieve with this thread.

You're not asking for help, you're not offering advice, you've basically just started a thread saying that some people are going to get higher energy bills than they were expecting. Well, yes, I think everybody already knows that.

How did you see this thread going. What sort of responses were you looking for?

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/12/2022 18:53

I just send a reading every month.

I'm past worrying about it now. I'm not sitting here cold.

If I owe thousands come next year so be it. Paying £275 via DD so will see what happens, might have to up it I guess.
