to think people who don't have Smart Meters and who pay monthly or quarterly are going to be in for a shock at their next bill?

Gas has gone up from 4p a kWH this time last year to 10p a kWH this year.
Obviously people with Smart Meters can see this on their display.

But if you still give readings and wait till the bill arrives, I think there are going to be some real surprises. Gas use is at its highest over the next few months.

I know people will have the £66 off their bill - but it's going to be high.

At least with Smart Meters, you can see daily use. Submitting a reading and then getting a statement and bill is going to be a shock for some people.

If people pay on receipt of bill, it's going to be a shock for some people

Is it though? How long has this been in the news now that fuel prices have increased and people might pay a lot more than they did?

WaddleAway · 11/12/2022 17:33

Honestly I couldn’t be arsed with a smart meter. It would really stress me out to sit watching it tick over. I’d become obsessive and I’ve got enough on my plate.
Also, my mum has one but they still keep estimating her bills for some reason.

PurpleButterflyWings · 11/12/2022 17:33

Load of crap @cakeorwine Like many others, I am quite capable of keeping track of my energy use without this pointless piece of shit 'the smart meter........'

I know a number of people who have had them, and they have all said they're crap, they malfunction constantly, and they cause them constant stress. Done without them for 50 years, don't need one now, and won't be bullied into one by people trying to mock and deride people who won't have them.

I notice you declined to put a POLL up. Too scared that the YABU % would be massively high? Grin

Like @tickticksnooze I do wonder what your motive is for promoting these useless lumps of shit? (smart meters...) WTF has it got to do with you if people have them or not? Confused You seem very invested in trying to convince people to switch. Very strange. Wink

I am not told what to do by ANYone, and I will certainly not be taking orders from some random nobody on the internet.

As you were.......... Wink

Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2022 17:34

OvO are always in our area installing smart meters apparently and would love us to have one. But I believe it's more for them than us and I don't actually want one.

cakeorwine · 11/12/2022 17:30

Then this is not about people like you.

If people pay on receipt of bill, it's going to be a shock for some people.

So you mean people who can't spare 2 minutes to use their phone any time and day any hour, to take a photo of there meters and get an instant reading and adjustment to their account.

Well that's called personal responsibility and nothing to do with a smart meter, what about all the people who's smart meters stop connecting or drop off the network. Sitting smug because you have a smart meter is ridiculous and proves nothing.

Reugny · 11/12/2022 17:35

cakeorwine · 11/12/2022 17:28

My point is that I think there is going to be a shock for some people when they put their readings in.

And possibly people saying they can't afford it - although they have used it.

Some people couldn't afford it before it got cold, and already self-disconnected. **

cakeorwine · 11/12/2022 17:35

So people on here think there will be no people expressing surprise at their bill on here or in the media over the next few months?

My energy company has just given me £117. Now that was a surprise.

www.uswitch.com/gas-electricity/news/2016/04/11/consumers-still-dont-understand-energy-bills/

A survey of 2,000 adults has found that customers vote energy suppliers the worst offenders for sending confusing bills, coming behind those including water companies, mortgage lenders, councils, phone companies and credit card lenders.
Consumers haven't noticed an improvement to bills
Despite Ofgem reforms two years ago designed to make energy bills easier to understand, almost half (48%) of consumers have noticed no difference.

But a lot has changed since 2016 forcing people to be a lot more aware of what is happening

True

But gas this winter is 2 1/2 times last year
And winter is the time most gas is used.

And most of us with a brain in our heads can work it out no matter what the numbers are

Yarrawonga · 11/12/2022 17:37

I don’t think so. Some of us that give readings are capable of doing the calculations to determine the cost based on the those readings. No smart meter needed.

cakeorwine · 11/12/2022 17:35

I think most people have seen the extremely extensive coverage about bills rising significantly, so while many people will be pissed off at their bills, I doubt there will be much surprise.

pointythings · 11/12/2022 17:37

Treacking your usage isn't rocket science. I pay by direct debit and I've reduced the time I have the heating on and how high I have it. I'm considerably in credit. My provider's projection for my usage and costs based on my pre-reduction usage and on current costs sees me coming through the winter just fine - if there is a Beast from the East obviously all bets are off.

Of course there will be BUT in most cases that will be due to not trying to keep and eye on things and/or burying head in the sand.

it is now pretty easy to keep on track of how much you are using

No because I'm only paying 3.841 per kWh

3WildOnes · 11/12/2022 17:29

I worked out, using last years bills, that during December, Jan and Feb if I use the same amount of gas and electricity then my bills will by around £600 pm. We have built a credit of over 1k coming into winter so this should cover us. There are lots of calculators online to work out your bills.

I did that for my December bill, also same with credit, I just think it's there I'm gonna use it and keep my house warm.
I need to do same for my jan and feb bill.

Sirzy · 11/12/2022 17:36

Energy suppliers also had to clean up their act on making sure the formulas on their bills were easy to use.

Atmywitsend29 · 11/12/2022 17:39

Tbh you sound like the man from EDF who keeps calling to pester us about having a smart meter fitted, because in his opinion no one can function without 🙄

Crabbi · 11/12/2022 17:39

No, I know how much it costs as the information is freely available, and I know how much I use as it’s easy to take a meter reading. I got a £600 rebate (I pay quarterly), so I’m not using that much and we have a very old draughty house.

Liorae · 11/12/2022 17:39

People really have swallowed the media eating vs eating bullshit haven't they...

EmergentThoughts · 11/12/2022 17:40

HamIsMyCake · 11/12/2022 17:22

OP, you’re coming across as a bit patronising

Yep. What's the point of this? To prove you're smarter than us?

I know I'm using more heating and therefore my costs will have increased. The exact calculations aren't really necessary imo. I've already decided to stop worrying about it because I can't change it. And I won't damage my health or my house in the meantime by keeping the heating off.

My energy supplier calls from a new number every 9 months or so.

I ask them some simple questions which they can't answer and then say "No thanks" then block them.

cakeorwine · 11/12/2022 17:40

I am not told what to do by ANYone, and I will certainly not be taking orders from some random nobody on the internet

You seem very angry.
At no point have I said get a Smart Meter

My concern is for people who submit a reading and who are going to get a large bill that they might not be expecting.

That's all

I am sure there are many people who keep track of their usage, who submit readings and who understand this.

And there are people who don't. People who have got used to submitting a meter reading and getting a bill. And who could be in for a shock.

Those are the people I am worried about. .They could end up in debt, being transferred to prepayment (which is more expensive_) and then worrying about their energy.
