To NOT call 111 for these symptoms in DD (6)?

She has had a cough for 3 days, high temp of up to 39.8 for 2 days, but lower in the day, some vomiting but mostly from congestion/coughing. She's alert, eating albeit small amounts and drinking.

Ex DH wants me to call 111 and is basically going on and on saying I always leave it too late to see a doctor. Last time she was unwell it turned into a chest infection, but I took her to see a doctor as soon as her chest sounded rattly. Time before that I took her once her temp had been high for 5 days (as it says on NHS website) and it was an ear infection. Those are the two most recent examples. So yes, both those times it was something more than just a cold virus, but I don't see the point in taking her BEFORE any signs of an infection.

So AIBU? Or is he?

A cough is not a symptom of Strep A. And a school age child should be able to say if their throat hurts.

As for the poster that said go to A&E, words fail me.

He's her dad, yes?
Why can't he call 111?

Isntitakward · 10/12/2022 12:56

Why wouldn’t you call? I mean… your child seems sick enough for me to ask for a medical help. High temperature and vomiting and cough. I know I’m lucky, but my children were never sick as you describe, so our perspective are perhaps a bit different. I’m staying on a side of caution

Isntitakward · 10/12/2022 12:57

P.S. I don’t necessarily mean 111 or A&E, but I would def try to get the same day GP or phone appointment. In other words, after 3 days, I would always contact a doctor.

Just realised he's not there...

Well, if he's not there, he's in no position to demand you call 111 really.
If he thinks somebody should call 111, he needs to come to her and then make the call.

Why can't he call 111?

Because he's not there and the first question they ask is 'are you in the room with them'.

This is honesty normal for her with any cold/virus, unless it does then turn into an infection, but at this point I don't think she's showing any signs of an infection

@coffeepleeease
I don’t completely understand. Do you mean she doesn’t show any signs of bacterial infection as opposed to viral? We can never be certain unless she’s tested (throat swab? Examination?). Could be bacterial tonsillitis or bronchitis or something else, or could be a simple viral respiratory infection. That’s why I’d call GP and would want my child to be seen after 3 days of illness, we don’t have a crystal ball.

Tiani4 · 10/12/2022 13:05

Cal pop comes with a little plastic syringe
Same as with my cats (I have 3 DCs) I squirt it into their throat 2.5ml at a time with a (offer of fave) drink after or put it in a small milkshake drink stirred in so that she takes it
And get that calpol into her
With strep A you are also looking for lethargy not drinking and little urine output, how's her glands?

To be safe I would call 111

But your exDH can't force you

Sorry yes, I obviously don't use the correct terms, I meant virus = no antibiotics needed, as opposed to chest/ear/throat infection.

That's true but she's showing no signs of a bacterial infection - not complaining of a sore throat, no sores on her throat or tonsils, cough isn't chesty, no earache. To me that's not an emergency and can wait until Monday, by which time I would call if she's still got a high temp

Temp is 37.3 now, although I know it may rise again later

Her gland aren't up, she's drinking fine and not lethargic

I’d watch and wait too. I’d be worried if the temp wasn’t coming down with calpol and ibuprofen but if she’s eating and drinking, even small amounts, and is still behaving like herself id watch and wait. Five days is the limit for calpol and ibuprofen without having seen a GP so I’d think about calling them day 4/5 if she still has a high temp. Two days really isn’t long to have a temp esp if she’s prone to them. Obviously if she gets sicker, stops weeing and deteriorates I’d seek help

Vegetablesupreme · 10/12/2022 13:31

My ds also has sensory issues OP and he is a calpol refuser too (in any way, shape or form) so I understand your frustration there. If it were my ds with those symptoms I'd not be calling 111 yet normally but because of the recent strep A cases and deaths I think I'd be extra cautious and call this time. It's just a call and would put your mind at rest as it will your ex's.
Hoping she feels better soon.
