To ask what a normal reaction to dog poo would be?

I have ocd and I struggle to know what's a normal reaction and what's ocd-
If your 5 year old stepped in dog poo, but you didn't notice until the next day (not loads about a 20p size amount but could have been more and been walked off I suppose)- so they would have been at school with it still on their shoe and they grab the sole of their shoe when putting shoes on.
would you clean their shoes and leave it at that?
clean their shoes and stick their coat and bag in the washing machine (because they'd likely have touched the shoe and then coat etc) and wipe over the back seat in the car where they were kicking the seat with said shoes on whilst sat in the car seat?

Stepping in dog poo was a weekly occurrence when I was walking my DD to school so this is something you will have to get used to.

If it happens when out then tell them to wipe their feet in the grass and then take their shoes off outside the front door.
Then get it out with a stick and give it a wash.

In this scenario I’d wash the bottom of the shoe and check none has been trampled through the car.

Dog poo is no worse for germs that most household things but the smell is nasty.

AlwaysLatte · 09/12/2022 22:25

I'd clean the shoe and take the opportunity for a good clean of the car and hall but I'd probably not think of washing the bag (I just wash that at the end of each term).

GrazingSheep · 09/12/2022 22:26

Speaking as someone whose toddler son once picked up a dog poo in the park and walked around with it, I’d just clean the shoe and wash hands.

littlepeas · 09/12/2022 22:28

Only clean the shoes.

Prometheus · 09/12/2022 22:30

I have OCD and drummed into my kids that you never touch the sole of your shoes. So knowing that they don’t do that, I’d just clean the sole of the school shoes.

Partyprofessional · 09/12/2022 22:31

If it’s covered, I’ll Chuck the shoes out. Obviously not the expensive ones. I have serious ocd with dog poo. I don’t even walk on grass unless it’s essential. I can’t stand it. I can smell it out, the tiniest drop

LizzieW1969 · 09/12/2022 22:31

I’d just clean the shoes, check the car for dog poo and leave it at that, personally. Or my DH would do it. 😄

It has worms

Bluesandwhites · 09/12/2022 22:36

Clean everything that has been in contact. I have read (think it was Dr.Mark Porter) that neither frost nor disinfectant can kill the toxicara canis worms.

Nooo what can? Bleach?

Is that wise? Nothing will happen to your children if they touch the soles of their shoes. Are you afraid of passing your disorder onto your children?

lljkk · 09/12/2022 22:41

Just the shoes. Thats' annoying, though.

Amanitacae · 09/12/2022 22:44

THIS!!!! Why would you drum that into your kids?

CarefreeMe · 09/12/2022 22:59

It has worms

So does every other wild animal and the majority of pets (and many kids).

As long as you carry out basic hygienic then you will be fine.

If your child gets worms from an animal or child then they can take medicine to get rid of them.

To be fair the worm eggs found in in dog poo can hatch inside humans and migrate to lungs/brain/eyes and cause seriously illness/blindness so it is a little different from thread worms that children spread

And toxoplasmosis which is found in the majority of animals and many humans can cause blindness, miscarriages, birth defects, schizophrenia etc.

I’m not saying don’t be careful but there’s no need to be hysterical over something that is literally all around us, else you’ll drive yourself mad and hygiene like moderate hand washing is still usually efficient enough to stop a child getting poorly from them.

user1471601171 · 10/12/2022 00:29

I’d clean the shoes and wash clothes and then spray the car with dettol spray just to put my mind to rest.

MajesticWhine · 10/12/2022 00:34

Clean the shoes only.

Crosswithlifeatm · 10/12/2022 00:35

If he,as children do ,put his hands in his mouth a lot then just establish hand washing after the toilet and before meals as not doing that is likely to leave you open to more than dig shit which you can at least see.

God I'd probably have a breakdown and throw everything out. I'm really OCD about dog poo.

Same. I've genuinely done this. Car mat and shoes got thrown away and I bought new ones.
I can handle most things but poo is not one of them.

Firstly, why would you do that? It's not fair to try to make them too scared to touch the soles of their shoes because where will that end? Too scared to sit on the ground? Too scared to run around and play in case they end up touching the ground that the soles of their shoes have touched?

Secondly, you don't 'know they don't do that' unless you really have put the fear of God into them.

Iwannabeacrocodilehunter · 10/12/2022 00:53

I have OCD and dog poo is one of my biggest fears.

When DS was about 2 he ran away from me at the park and slipped over in dog poo.

Everything went into the bin at the park. His shoes; clothes; everything. I then bathed him in the sink at the public loo, before I took him home in my cardigan. It was absolutely vile. There’s no way I could have put poo-ey clothes in my washing machine, so there was nothing for it but to through them away. Also, I wouldn’t be able to bring myself to ‘clean’ the shoes, so they are always going to be bin worthy too.

No hope when it comes to dog, or cat poo in my opinion.

HeatwaveToNightshade · 10/12/2022 01:06

Fucking dirty bastard dog owners. This should not happen.

Just the shoes though. I'd just clean the shoes.

Oh I know it drives me mad, the park to school is a dog poo obstacle course
i only bought these shoes on Monday, and we've only been to and from school which is a 2 minute walk.
there's always dog poo trodden in all over the pavement on the way to school so o dread to think what the schools carpet must be like

As far as throwing everything away goes- that's what I used to do but it was getting ridiculous and I can't afford to keep buying shoes and things every other week, so I'm trying g to be more rational
I just can't help but think about everything he's touched inside the flat all his teddies and toys straight after he came in I can't decided whether it's over kill to put it all in the wash because I don't know what he touched
