Seen a coat I like and it's vintage, shearling. See pic.

Is this considered cruel?

I don't personally consider it cruel as long as the animal is despatched humanely. The question is, do you? Shearling is skin / leather after all, not just wool. If it doesn't sit right with you, don't buy the coat.

To me. Yes. It's using the fur barbarically removed from its owner and promoting it as a fashion piece. I'm sure many will disagree but I see no difference with this than me using a lamp made by Ed Gein.

I saw so many people who are against fur wearing shearling shoes and clothes items.
I am not even against fur if whole animal is used, eg. Rabbits. Would be a waste otherwise.

If it's shearling lamb, and it's a by-product of the meat industry, then no. The animal was raised for meat.

This. If you're vegetarian, I wouldn't wear it. If you eat meat, go for it. Would rather the whole animal were used.

I wear leather shoes and eat beef. I wear shearling and eat lamb. The animal has died, we shouldn't waste any.

Animals purely for fur I see differently. I don't want that.

A vegetarian of vegan would have a different view to me.

(Caveat. That's a lot of wool for a lamb)

Cheesuswithallama · 09/12/2022 19:41

@tilder absolutely that.
If there was similar like for example trackable higher welfare meat for fur, it would be great. I think more people would be open to it like they are to leather.
It's great, durable material, keeps warm, is nice and it's one of the parts of animals we eat so shame (and shame on us)to waste it.

I have some sheepskin pieces, but since I found out that astrakhan is made from the skin of aborted almost full term lambs, killing both the mother and the fetus, I give that a swerve…

Thanks all, food for thought

Vintage is different-nothing you can do about it now.

If however you could kill, or feel comfortable paying someone to kill the animal for you, then go for it I say.

Itsabitnotcold · 09/12/2022 22:02

I find it kind of barbaric to wear the skin of another animal. I don't wear leather or fur. There might be animal products I'm things I wear but I don't like the idea of it looking like there's a dead animal draped over my shoulders.
