Cashing in off the backs of worried parents ?

Received this email from Randox , one of the COVID testing companies. They are now offering a Strep A test (for research purposes only) for the fee of £80. This is a common illness and very mild for most. AIBU to think this is disgusting and blatantly profiteering from anxious people ?

Agree!

I can't get worked up about this. Just say no.

Or it's a company offering a solution to all the parents on here saying they're worried, want peace of mind, would happily pay but don't want to waste NHS/GP time when others are more in need...

girlmom21 · 09/12/2022 16:13

They did the same with covid. They're a private company. I don't see the issue.

earsup · 09/12/2022 16:16

oh them again....they have adverts on the stations for all types of testing and well being reviews etc....no more strep A than previous years...dont read the papers....all a media panic.

It says for research purposes only so isn't even a reliable diagnostic test 🤣

I agree that it's profiteering. I do think people need to be vigilent for strep. It's not actually that mild in many cases and without antibiotics is fatal in a significant minority of cases. That said if treated it is very unlikely to lead to complications and absolutely shouldn't cause hysteria. (Mine had it years ago and after antibiotics was fine after a day).

I agree. No one is compelled to buy tests if they don't want to.

The media have got a lot to answer for here. They do this time and time again with illness. I remember the 90’s when they whipped up a frenzy about the ‘flesh eating’ bug, and then Ebola. There was also SARS and swine flu. They always, always need to have some crisis to flog to pieces.

PAFMO · 09/12/2022 16:20

Funnily enough, I've not received one.
But then, unlike the OP, I'm not signed up to receive emails from them.
You could try unsubscribing?

Yes unfortunately I had to purchase a COVID test from them to travel abroad last year. I will be unsubscribing the profits must be running dry..

RUO just means that they aren't CE marked (which is pretty standard in medical testing) so aren't sold as a product and the company (in this case Randox) take on liability for ensuring the test is safe. It's just a legal formality to save money.

StickyCricket · 09/12/2022 16:44

After having to purchase a Covid test from them last year, returning from holiday, not completing the test, then getting a “your covid test was negative” result from them - I would say their tests aren’t worth even the few pence it probably costs Randox to manufacture them, never mind £80.

pd339 · 09/12/2022 16:47

Pah. Companies exist to profit off of people by offering services they think people might buy. You could apply the same argument to most companies at some point in the year. That's just capitalism.
