Always check before you tap!

Probably stating the obvious here and I normally do check the amount before I tap my card but I didn't today and... I got home to find that a £2.80 purchase has gone through as £283!

I can't get through to the shop on the phone and can't go there today so I'm hoping they'll be helpful tomorrow.

Thinking about it I generally have to ask to see the amount (and fight the urge to apologise for doing so!) so I guess people don't always ask to see the machine.

There's a £100 limit on contactless isn't there?

Not if you use Apple Pay. Not sure about other digital cards but I assume they are the same.

Notimeforaname · 09/12/2022 14:55

Cards wont tap that much.

Ah ok!didn't know this.

But yeah I always look down at the machine. The total is right were you tap. I've never not seen the amount

Didn't know that! Suddenly grateful to be such a technophobe.

Hope you get it sorted OP.

monsteronahill · 09/12/2022 14:59

Apple Pay is a 10k limit I think!!

That's so annoying OP - do you have your receipt? Hopefully they're helpful tomorrow!

Luana1 · 09/12/2022 15:12

I didn't know people tapped without checking the amount tbh! Hope the shop can refund you quickly OP..

Consider contacting your bank and asking for a chargeback?

CombatBarbie · 09/12/2022 17:32

Google pay is also unlimited. I had a £39 tap through at 39p, didn't notice til a few days later.

Browniegal13 · 09/12/2022 17:58

I had the same happen to me - I paid £127 for some Subway sandwiches, instead of £27. They refunded the money x

This is what worries me about some of the charity shops I use. Some of them have staff who seem to struggle with using the card machines.

Millana · 09/12/2022 18:02

Update - managed to get through to the shop and they have been really helpful.

They've looked at their systems and can see there was a transaction of that amount. Apparently there are some good cameras on every till so they will check the footage so they will be able to see what I bought. They've also said they'll speak to the cashier. It was a cheap store so I'm guessing he'll remember if someone spent almost £300. I said I didn't want him telling off because it was my own fault as much as his and it's not like he could pocket the extra. Hopefully they listened.

If the above doesn't work, I'll contact my bank but I'm not sure they'll be able to help because I gave the shop the permission to take the money didn't I?

What kind of shop was this?

Normally when you scan the barcode on say a shampoo bottle the till recognises Aussie shampoo £3 and tallies it up at the end so there is no inputting of the total by the till attendant.

The only time I see them keying in amounts is in a newsagent or an independent 99p shop type place.

Millana · 09/12/2022 19:24

@ouch321 yes, it was a pound shop type place. Why?

If items have been scanned into an integrated till system then you get charged the price in line with their product inventory

If a manually operated till then you get charged what they type in, and the same goes if they use a stand-alone card reader whereby they type in the item totals

It’s amazing how many people will happily tap their card without looking at the charge amount

When I’m doing sales at shows etc and young children are paying themselves I’ll tend to point out to them to read the screen to make sure I’m charging how much they think i am

If it’s a contactless card you do have maximum limits for just tapping, and it requires you to enter the pin
but if you run it through your a smartphone etc then you will have authorization rules in apple wallet etc meaning that it doesn’t count as contactless (eg your waving it past your face for facial recognition or tapping the volume button to authorize etc)

I've had people just point the bit of the machine where you tap at me at an angle which meant I couldn't see the screen, and had to ask to see it.

Millana · 10/12/2022 11:18

They have refunded me. They couldn't see exactly what I'd bought but were able to see it wasn't £300 and the shop assistant didn't remember. I'm not sure why they couldn't match their till receipt with the card receipt iyswim but apparently they couldn't.

They refunded the full amount and wouldn't let me give some back because it was easier to write off the £2.80. I did pop £5 in their charity pot though.

Yes, I do normally check the amount. I don't know why I didn't this time but lesson learned!

The thing is 99% of the time I have to ask to see the amount on the reader because they shop assistants don't show it. Sometimes when I ask they make a fuss of showing me as if it's unreasonable. As I said above, I have to stop myself apologising whenever I ask to see the amount.

Where I work (big clothing retailer) I have to key in the amount into the card reader. Everything goes through the till by scanning barcodes but if a customer is paying by card I have to manually key in the amount on the reader before they tap. They are 2 seperate systems. So human error is very possible. I'm always very careful, not had a mistake yet.
