AIBU to book a hotel room for Monday night to avoid strikes?

ON Tuesday I have to be in London for 7:30. I live in Surrey. I also have to be in London on Monday for a meeting. I was dreading the effort required to make the 7:30 meeting anyway as we only have 2 trains an hour so, to ensure I'm not late, I inevitably have to take one even earlier. But with the train strikes, I'll have to cab to the edge of London to take a tube and I'm not even sure tubes will be running efficiently.

If I get a hotel room, I can do my meeting on Monday then use my hotel room to work in the afternoon. Enjoy a quiet evening to myself and get up at a normal time because I'd just have to walk to my meeting? It's a breakfast meeting, so don't even need to eat breakfast in my hotel first!

Is this crazy and selfish? Leaving DH to deal with the DC monday night and Tuesday morning when he also has to work Tuesday and will need to get DS off and DD off to breakfast club?

Do it! It makes sense. Do you have much time to yourself normally?

Anjo2011 · 09/12/2022 13:26

Do it ! Don’t leave it too late though as the cost for hotels in London atm is high already. Add in a train strike and they will rise further.

CharityShopChic · 09/12/2022 13:28

A night in a hotel, on my own, without the constant "muuuuuuum" calls - hell yeah.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/12/2022 13:28

Yes, do it.

File it under ‘self care’.

JE17 · 09/12/2022 13:30

Don't even think twice about it. Get it booked and enjoy.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 09/12/2022 13:30

I think you have to
I mean, if the trains are cancelled you won't make your meeting at all. Right?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 09/12/2022 13:31

I'd be doing that anyway, regardless of train strikes!

AnnoyedNurse · 09/12/2022 13:34

If the situation was reversed would your husband book a hotel and leave you to it for the evening?
If so, definitely!

PinkPlantCase · 09/12/2022 13:37

Is it not possible to re-arrange any of the meetings? That would be what I’d try to do initially.

If you 100% have to be there then yes hotel sounds sensible

DH is allergic to spending money unnecessarily - although doesn't have any issue with me doing so - so no, he wouldn't! Grin

I've done it though. All booked. I can cancel by tomorrow night if I change my mind or something happens.

Sounds sensible to me. I'd check your meetings are definitely going ahead and also hotel availability. Others will have the same plans to avoid having to travel.

I'm sure the children's father is able to parent solo for 48 hours. Many other people manage it every day without issues.

Lcb123 · 09/12/2022 13:42

Of course, makes total sense. The reverse - would think to even ask

maddy68 · 09/12/2022 13:44

Do it anyway and have a nice time

Figgypuddingpiggyfudding · 09/12/2022 13:46

I'd speak to my husband and check he is happy for me to do it, just as I would expect him to do with me.

It seems to make a lot more sense than travelling back and forth during a strike.

Not really sure what the issue is.

dizzydizzydizzy · 09/12/2022 13:50

Do it and put it in expenses.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/12/2022 13:52

Won't your meeting be cancelled or go online because of the strikes?

All mine have gone online for next week

PearlclutchersInc · 09/12/2022 13:55

If it's paid for by expenses go for it. Be warned London hotels are extortionate at the moment (they were on Weds anyway).

Kfjsjdbd · 09/12/2022 13:55

Possibly weird, but I’m driving into central London for 7.30am from the outskirts of Surrey (Kingston) on Tuesday morning if you want a lift?

MsMarch · 09/12/2022 14:18

Thanks all.

Most meetings are virtual so the few that are in person take a great deal to cancel. I have checked in with the client and as expected, they'd like this to go ahead as they will be there.

I have booked the hotel room. Nothing fancy and considering the price of the cabs both ways, I'm not even adding THAT much to the cost. I will expense it - but it's my company so I still have to pay, albeit with the tax relief.

Mostly I'm just really looking forward to not having to get up at 5:30 and start my journey at 6:15.

@Kfjsjdbd that's kind of you and another day, I might well have taken you up on it.

@Figgypuddingpiggyfudding I asked DH before I even posted and he said, "Do it!"

So really, the agonising was all in my head. Grin

@MsMarch we've all been there!

Zanatdy · 09/12/2022 16:47

Of course it makes sense

ElfHasBeenSilly · 09/12/2022 16:47

I see you have reached your conclusion, but I will just ask… can I come too? 🤣

Enjoy it!

Igmum · 09/12/2022 18:27

I love this idea! If it's not too late book somewhere with a pool 😁

AriettyHomily · 09/12/2022 18:41

Will you be able to get home?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/12/2022 19:00

Absolutely YANBU, glad you booked it. Sometimes it’s the only way
