To serve individual pies for Xmas dinner

I'm working the night shift on Christmas Eve. I'll be home early hours Christmas Day morning. My mum will be here until she goes to my sister's in the morning and my friend is coming over for dinner, games, TV etc. There will be my friend, DS3 and me eating.

My friend isn't really a meat eater (not quite veggie though) and I don't want to cook a joint of meat for just me as DS will eat very little of it.

So I was thinking for Christmas Day dinner to do the trimmings and get a nice individual pie each. I would do a nut roast but I'm not convinced that would be better.

The rest of the day will be filled with cheese, chutney, chocolates, cheesecake. All the best C's for Christmas.

Sounds perfect! There isn’t a law about the content of xmas dinner- the our plan works for your family so that’s what matters. Enjoy!

starrynight21 · 09/12/2022 04:03

Sounds great ! There are only three of you, you can eat what you like. Christmas doesn't have be bound with rules about what you must eat - just enjoy the day . It sounds lovely.

minou123 · 09/12/2022 04:05

I love it!

Of course, you'll probably get people saying Xmas isn't Xmas without the turkey, but I think that's nonsense. I think Xmas Dinner is about eating what you enjoy.

Biut then again, I'm someone who ate hummus and chocolate ice cream, one Xmas day 😋

Sure, no reason why not. We have a picnic of all our favourite foods on a picnic blanket on the living room floor for ours, since neither DH nor I want to spend half the day cooking and washing up.

We used to struggle through with a full dinner, but the kids don't like it anyway. I would warn people in advance though - if they're expecting something else they might get upset

Go for it - I couldn’t resist these and whilst I’m not going to use them for Christmas dinner you definitely could!

That's just what I'm going to do!

For the last few years I've really pulled out all the stops for Christmas dinner plus Boxing Day with my mother, who eats very little of it so there's leftovers for days. This year I'm dialling it down and buying most of it from Cook. Their food is delicious and there's no prepping, wastage etc involved. 🌹

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/12/2022 04:56

What time should I be there? 😛

MarianneVos · 09/12/2022 05:04

Do whatever you like, and if you'd prefer it to turkey why not? I personally would really miss turkey but if you won't that's fine.

Would DS/your guest prefer sausage? Pie might be quite filling with all the rest?

Redbluegreen123 · 09/12/2022 05:09

Hi I think it's fine x we have pizza and chips Christmas day at our house 😁

jayhoo · 09/12/2022 05:17

Sounds perfect, thanks for I'm veggie daughter and partner vegan two youngest eat meat. I usually get a chicken or turkey crown for them and we max out on sides.

Stuffed pumpkin for the vegans last year, was delicious - layered colourful veg topped with a biryani/piaffe Smile

Dontsparethehorses · 09/12/2022 05:23

@Newestname002 do it! We have last 3 maybe 4 years?! We buy a cook Christmas dinner for 2, add extra sides and there is plenty for me, dh and 2 children who mainly just want pigs in blankets, Yorkshire pudding and a bit of turkey… we do extra brocolli because it’s the easiest veg they both eat! Absolutely delicious and super stress free day

Ilovehamandtoast · 09/12/2022 05:31

Eat what you want. My husband and I have had takeaway some years - I seem to always be sick at Christmas.
My ideal would be homemade lasagne 😋

DisneyToDucks · 09/12/2022 07:12

@Dontsparethehorses thank you for the Cook link. That's absolutely perfect for me. I think the veggie dinner for two and then add to it will do all three of us.

I know it is scandalous on MN but there will be cauliflower/broccoli cheese, stuffing and Yorkshires on our dinner. Oh and pigs in blankets for me and DS (friend doesn't eat any pork).

@Mumtobabyhavoc if you're down south come find us! Judging by your username sounds like you might be some peace!

Will do! 😉
I'm thinking of making sides and buying a barbeque duck from the local asian market. Yes, little Havoc keeps me busy...

Sounds great!

mdh2020 · 09/12/2022 18:20

We always do this. We buy individual vegetarian wellingtons from Lidl. They look good on the plate.

gogohmm · 09/12/2022 18:44

They have butternut squash wellington's in Lidl, how about something like that, add pigs in blankets for a meaty hit

fannyfartlet · 09/12/2022 18:53

Sounds good to me!
