Doctors are being a bit useless - how do I get the sample?

Hi all,

Weird post for night time I know but I promise I'm not some kind of piss troll I just didn't think to ask here and after ringing the doctors and paediatrician I really don't know what to do.

I have a very big two year old - he's in 3-4 clothes and they're getting a bit tight, he can't support his own weight so can't stand up and isn't toilet trained.

How the bloody hell do we get a wee sample? I've tried everything he doesn't really wee in the bath now but when he did by the time I got the sample pot and DH came up to hold him he had finished, he doesn't really respond to a wet baby wipe on the belly, he's possibly on the spectrum so doesn't understand us and won't be held so I don't really know what else to do but we need a wee sample.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

What is the sample for? Infection or something else?
anyway you’ve got two options. Feed him lots of water and keep him on an oilskin cloth or something (naked obvs) until he pees, syringe it up and add to bottle.
Or buy a Newcastle pad which is specially designed for this scenario. You can also use gauze and a syringe to the same effect. Gauze in nappy (checking frequently so the nappy doesn’t pinch the moisture) when it’s wet put it in the syringe and squeeze out the pee. It’s not sterile but is used when necessary.

Put him in a nappy with some gauze or cotton wool . After he has done a wee either ‘wring out’ the algauze into a pot

Why do you need a sample??? Are you at home or in hospital?

I worked in A&E years ago, so there might be something different now. Generally, we asked parents to take nappy off and put a towel/pad square on their laps, then give them either sterile tray or pot to collect a sample in- when they did urinate. There are urine collection devices which stick onto the skin- but back then- they were generally considered not as good a clean catch of urine. It can be waiting game OP. Give fluids and wait.

We're at home, honestly I'm not totally sure what it's for as we went to the paediatrician because he can't walk yet and he may be on the spectrum so he asked for bloods and urine sample - bloods we've done and they've asked for a urine sample but we've been trying for a week and it feels impossible but I'll try the ideas on here! Thank you x

If it’s not for an infection sterility is slightly less important. You could also ring the GP or even the children’s ward about a Newcastle pad

Tena lady or the Cheapy pads, insert into nappy, rip it up and squeeze wee into a pot when he's had a wee. Or just wait for him to wee

They usually give you a special nappy with a pad in. Ask the dr or I guess a pharmacy might help. How silly of them not to have thought to tell you how to do it.

I think because he's so big they just assumed he could stand up or understand us I don't know, I called the doctors and the receptionist didn't know either and wouldn't ask the doctor Confused

I'll ask about the pad tomorrow or I'll order one

The receptionist sounds ridiculous, it’s not like you can just magically get him to be able to do stuff he can’t (or you wouldn’t be there in the first place). Be blunt and polite and firmly ask for more support. Sadly it’s a skill you are likely to need in the future. It’s totally reasonable to ask for advice on how they’d like you to proceed.

When I needed a sample for my smaller child I gave him loads to drink and gave him some toys and let him sit in thee wash basket to play. He eventually did a wee and o syringed that up. Good luck! It's a frustrating thing to try and get.

We had same after paediatrician appointment. I was given a cardboard bowl so I followed him round and caught it.

At my GP they give us a specially designed plastic bag with sticky bits on to stick on the baby and to capture the wee. Ask the doctor if they have something like that?
