Employer just told staff my previous salary

Winterwonderlandisicy · 08/12/2022 14:53

I am fuming.

I have just received an email which has been written by my line manager.

He has disclosed to two members of staff my salary at my previous employer and my location where I live.

I have just sent an email saying “ I do not consent to my home location or salary information being shared with staff or third parties’

Do you think this is very rude.

Recruitment consultants often tinker with candidates cvs. It shouldn't have been circulated to the marketing team without your consent. I'd be fuming about this, but ultimately only you can decide if you can forgive your manager and continue working there, or need to look for another new role.

All the best op

YABU for having your address, marital status and salary info on your CV in the first place.

Plenty of Misses are in long-term relationships with men who could scare off your colleagues, too. (And being a Mrs isn't a talisman against getting hit on at work!)

You flagged it, move on.

Is this right OP? Do you have your address, marital status and salary on your CV? Because i've never known anyone do that before.

Winterwonderlandisicy · 08/12/2022 16:36

I didn’t put this information on the CV. The recruiter has - I used an agency

So why did you tell the agency your marital status?

Winterwonderlandisicy · 08/12/2022 16:40

I didn’t tell the recruiter I was single. I had not even seen the recruiter CV until today!

Winterwonderlandisicy · 08/12/2022 16:41

I have emailed back to say no problem.

im not reporting it as a gdpr breach.

I’ve only started the job this week as it is

the boss is actually a really nice guy otherwise

From a practical point of view you need it removed as soon as possible. However if they email staff wide everyone about the mistake all the colleagues who never noticed it will suddenly want to see it so be careful what is done does not backfire. Your salary except in careers with published salaries in bands like NHS and teachers is usually strictly confidential. Where you live is may be not so secret but it could be if you had a restraining order against an ex husband.

I think this is definitely the most realistic way to deal with it, yes it is a GDPR breach and if I were in your shoes 1 week into a job I wouldn’t report it either, it’s easy for people to say they would if they aren’t in your circumstances

I don’t like people to know I’m single.

He has contacted the person he sent it to and asked them to delete it.

the receiver said they didn’t open it or read it but I don’t believe them.

thanks for all your thoughts .

God you sound difficult

TeaChocKitKat · 08/12/2022 17:07

Marketing teams will be used to receiving confidential and information. I can see why you are annoyed and it breaches GDPR but the Marketing team will handle it sensitively. Even if they did open it, I'd be amazed if they repeated any information in it to colleagues. Try not to worry and just enjoy your new job.
I was the marketing person given our new CEOs CV and asked to write a biography on her for some external comms (the difference here was that she gave permission first). However, I didn't give her personal details a second thought and I deleted the CV as soon as I'd finished writing the biography.

Galliano · 08/12/2022 17:12

I’ve seen hundreds of cvs with this type of info. I just checked the privacy notice on the careers site of my employer and it makes it quite clear that information candidates share as part of an application to us will be shared internally. This sounds like what has been done here so probably not a GDPR breach. I just ignore anything that’s irrelevant to the reason I’m assessing the CV, but certainly wouldn’t expect anyone to waste time redacting parts given our privacy notice.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/12/2022 17:22

"When a recruiter sends over a CV to a client about a candidate, they include details of current package on there so that all of the information about the candidate is in one place and accessible."

When I did agency work, the agency made summary CVs for us. We had no control over what they did and I only realised they did this when I saw the CV at the client/employer's.

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/12/2022 17:28

StarbucksSmarterSister · 08/12/2022 15:02

it has been given out to the marketing team who create CVS to give to potential clients

Absolutely no way they should have your salary, or your address. I'd make a complaint to HR.

This.

Surely this breaches data protection?

FitAt50 · 08/12/2022 17:37

I honestly wouldn't care and think you are making a huge issue out of nothing..

slowquickstep · 08/12/2022 17:40

Hoppinggreen · 08/12/2022 15:23

So the CV you applied with has been shared internally?
Its. It’s not great but obviously a genuine mistake and if I were your manager I would not appreciate the arsey email . You should have let them know you weren’t happy but worded it much better

It is not a mistake, the lazy sod didn't bother reading before pressing send and has admitted that.

BellePeppa · 08/12/2022 17:40

Winterwonderlandisicy · 08/12/2022 15:46

The reason I don’t like people to know I’m single is because I work in a male dominated profession. Discrimination is bad enough.

It annoys the hell out of me that women have to disclose their marital status when men don’t. There should be just one honorific for women just as there is for men.

LadyLapsang · 08/12/2022 17:44

It’s quite normal to share CVs for people who will be working on a contract and in bidding for work along with their fee, e,g. Miss X Senior Partner £200 ph. Obviously that is not their salary but you can get an idea of the relationship between how they are charged and what they earn.

I still don’t understand how your relationship status even got on a CV if you didn’t include it or discuss it with the recruiter.

Women don't have to disclose their marital status. Many prefer to be addressed as Ms

DuplicateUserName · 08/12/2022 18:08

'Miss' doesn't mean you're single, it means unmarried.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 08/12/2022 18:26

LlynTegid · 08/12/2022 15:45

Agree about the GDPR lead being contacted.

Agree also that your relationship status is a private matter and indeed could be argued to be against Equalities duties to disclose it (people of certain backgrounds more likely to use their maiden name if married, lesbians won't usually be Mrs, for example). Or you could have left a vulnerable/DV situation.

Eh, why wouldn't lesbians use mrs if they're married?

When a recruiter sends over a CV to a client about a candidate, they include details of current package on there so that all of the information about the candidate is in one place and accessible. Very unusual for them not to remove a home address and contact info though, most recruiters would take all of that off so all contact with the candidates goes through them.

I have never received current package details in CVs sent by our recruitment agencies. I wouldn't consider giving those details to a recruiter if I were job hunting.

What I need to know on a CV from a recruiter is the salary they are looking for. Its up to us to assess them against the market rates and decide if we want to offer them waht they are asking for or a lower level if we wish to progress them.

Current salary is nobody's business if not on a published salary scale. If its on a published salary scale there is no need for it.

if your medical details got shared out at your workplace you would not be happy!
