To eat cheese?

Just bored and musing really but so indecisive!

I am lactose intolerant, have been for about 3 years now. I am pretty strict at avoiding stuff I can't have which makes it worse when I don't. For example i had coco pops (with LF milk) and it took 2 days to feel better.

Lactase tablets can help to a point.

However I love cheese, all the cheese and it's Christmas, I must celebrate the birth of baby Cheesus!

so AIBU to eat all the cheese when I know it will make me feel ill?

YANBU - Stock up on aloe vera loo roll and enjoy yourself

YABU - the sprouts are bad enough - think of the children!

and please don't suggest the abomination that is vegan cheese!

I mean it’s up to you really, eat what you want. I would say though if cheese makes you sick and you want to eat it anyway, don’t be that person who goes on and on about it. Just eat your cheese then be ill in silence.

dementedpixie · 08/12/2022 14:30

Coco pops don't contain milk so wouldn't have lactose in them. Are you sure it's lactose you can't have? Could be cows milk protein you have an issue with which is why lactose free milk would still affect you.

I think you’re barmy but your body. I’d look at the dairy and pick a clear window to be ill in.

fortifiedwithtea · 08/12/2022 14:34

Diary not dairy 🙄

Assuming it's only you that has to deal with the repercussions and you're happy to take them on board then crack on.

If however lactos has the same effect on you that it does on me and would result in all around having to suffer horrid smells for a couple of days I think you should give it a miss!

lemonjam · 08/12/2022 14:38

For the most part I’d agree with you that vegan cheese is abominable but we got a stupidly expensive one called shamembert last Christmas which was unreal, even the real cheese lovers loved it

TrianglePlayer · 08/12/2022 14:42

I am lactose intolerant. Even looking at cheese makes me feel ill now. I couldn’t even consider it. The pain and the bad stomach aren’t fun.

Anothernamechange1010 · 08/12/2022 14:45

Eat the cheese!

Alcohol makes us feel rubbish, say stupid things, do stupid things, fall over, get the swirlies - but it doesn't stop us (obviously not everybody, I know not everyone is this stupid!)

At least cheese is less likely to be doing long term damage to your liver, your relationships and your bank balance 😅

lovethelake · 08/12/2022 14:50

Gruyère cheese is lactose free and delicious.

xogossipgirlxo · 08/12/2022 14:51

You need to do your own risk assessment 😅My husband is gluten intolerant (not coeliac), and I know he's going to cut some slack for Christmas and New Years Eve, but that's it. I'm wondering if he's going to scratch himself like crazy, as he normally does. If so, he's sleeping on the sofa 😂

This is a good point, it's not a picnic for those around me and the poor dog getting all the blame Grin

Oh two good recommendations there - where did the shammembert come from?

They say lots of cheeses and butter are practically lactose free but I certainly know about it if I eat them.

You could always send me all your cheese and I will eat it for you, except for the blue stuff, you can keep that because the devil has spat on it.

Tropicaliyes · 16/12/2022 07:09

oh stay away from Low fat milks, full fats contain less lactose than the low fat so that could be why coco pops made you sick.

When I stay away from milk and dairy for too long, I become lactose intolerant again, right now I cannot handle milk, however strangely enough can handle cheese and yoghurts providing there are live cultures as they also help break down the lactose. I also use a probiotic on top to help however I’m not at a point where I can drink any milk without feeling sick so I have milk alternatives but can still have things that contain milk.

you can always get some pills on Amazon to break down the lactose for you so you don’t have to worry about what you eat and how much.

remember the intolerances go on degrees and what some might find acceptable for them isn’t acceptable for others so it’s very personal and needs tweaking for each person. Most things you eat contain lactose even when you wouldn’t think it would so you can consume small amounts if you want to have that kind of self control, if not there are a few options available to you.
