3.4 degrees

I woke up this morning to the thermostat thingy reading 3.4 degrees, I'm a tough old bird and always felt warm over night without the heating on but no more! How's everyone else coping?

Unless OP lives somewhere very north, has had zero heating for days, the curtains shut to stop any sunlight getting in, hasn’t cooked a meal etc. There is no way her house got to 3.5degrees. We renovated an old house one winter with no electricity or heating and the coldest that it got was about 9 degrees. There was snow outside for days that winter so it was somewhere around -1 to 3 outside.

Pipes don’t freeze at 13 degrees.

I don’t let the temperature drop below 5 to protect the pipes, as above.

it is possible for a house to be 3 degrees inside, not sure if the OP’s is, but it’s perfectly possible.

Yes in Siberia.😂
Pipes won't freeze at 5c either.

Lifelessordinary1 · 08/12/2022 13:18

When my children were little we only had heating in one room - the lounge.

And the water in the toilet used to have a layer of ice in the mornings and the windows had ice on the inside when it was below freezing outside.

I never took the indoor temp but i had just assumed that if things are actually starting to freeze surely that means it is close to 0'

Once we had the roof replaced and insulated and the double glazing installed this no longer happened even though we still only had heating in the one room

OP if your house really is 3.4° then you have my sympathy. I would strongly suggest that you either find a way to turn the heating on a bit more or consider going to a warm hub or to live with friends and family for a time, because you can get dangerously ill if you’re living at that temperature for a long time. Like others I really doubt whether this is the case though, I was doing a hobby in an unheated church last night and even though the temperature only dropped to 10°.

Also I really wish people would stop the mass hysteria/ competitive happiness at low temperatures. I have an elderly relative who is probably suffering with early onset dementia. She is being driven absolutely crazy by the constant talk of energy crisis and people not putting the heating on, so much so that she’s refusing to turn the heating on as she thinks she’ll lose all her money and have to leave her home, despite the fact that she’s actually relatively wealthy and could easily afford it. It may seem heartless but I sort of wish people would stop turning this into a talking shop/ discussion item and just get on with what they can do in their own homes- surely the information about what can be done is all out there already?

Crunchingleaf · 08/12/2022 13:24

Can a house really get to that temperature unless you live in Siberia or parts of Canada.
If this is genuine then get insulation in the attic. Costs very little compared to other measures and makes a huge difference. Also put the heating on before you start having damp problems.

I am with you on that. I saw facebook group where it's very obvious what this is doing to vulnerable people.
Lots of people pay 200DD a month but refuse to turn heating. I think lots of people doesn't realise in this whipped up anxiety that they absolutely can turn heating on within their DD wothout paying extra on top.

3.4 degrees C indoors? I don't think so.

Are you actually going to bother responding to any of the posts @typos ? You posted your original post and have not returned. shocker Wink

I may change my name to heating troll 🤣 love it! I'm just trying to work out how to add photos and I will produce evidence! It's only on 12 degrees now. I work outside so sorry for the delay incoming back to all the nice replies.

I can make my thermostat/thermometer say 3.4 degrees C if I pop it outside for a few minutes Wink OR as a pp said, it can be much lower in the conservatory. We used to have a conservatory in a previous home, and it was 6-7 degrees in winter some days. (Early 1990s lean-to conservatory, and useless.)

GetOffTheRoof · 08/12/2022 12:28

Don't you? It's not got above -1c here in my part of Cornwall yet today, but I've not let the house drop below 14. It was down to 12c indoors last week without heating. 80s build house, decent windows etc....

I don’t understand how that probes your point? Your house was 12, that’s a way off 3 degrees indoors!

Hobbesmanc · 08/12/2022 13:56

The thermometer downstairs in the kitchen diner was 8 this morning cos we are trying to save on bills. It was too cold to work in to be honest. It's an old house poorly insulated and single glazed.

mewkins · 08/12/2022 13:56

I'd check the battery on your thermostat. I think low battery can cause it not to give accurate readings.

RandomBanto · 08/12/2022 09:57

Are you the heating troll out again in this cold weather . There's no way it was 3 degrees in your house. Unless you slept with all the windows open. Ours was 15 degrees when I woke up and is 18 now with the heating on.

I always have the bedroom windows open. Even with temperatures of minus 2 outside and no heating on it was nowhere near as low as single figures.

knittingaddict · 08/12/2022 14:03

Conservatory. When we had an unheated conservatory we used it to store drinks and vegetables for Christmas. It was bloody freezing. I didn't sleep in there though.

Interestquestion · 08/12/2022 14:06

Mine was 7 this morning - poor insulation. I enjoy how people announce their house can’t get below X temperature. Mine can really plumb the depths.

You think I've been outside with the thermostat just to win an argument with some random on the internet? How is that possibly going to benefit me? I live on a farm in a very isolated and exposed area and we didn't have the heating on! We're also "fingers crossed" waiting for planning permission so we live in a mobile home - we have temporary planning to live on site for the record. We havent been cold at night or too bad in the morning so the heating has t been on. It will be tonight. So everyone with a pitchfork can put it down but also there's been some very funny posts too!

Do you live somewhere very old and draughty?

Like a hay barn?

Love this!

3.5 does sound extremely cold for indoors, OP. It's 13.5 here at the moment. Old, cold house.

NewNormalLife · 08/12/2022 14:11

it's 2pm and my house is 9c atm. we had the thermostat set to 12 last night due to uqving little kids and the heating was on most of the night.

cheshirecatssmile · 08/12/2022 14:15

I can believe
My electric is broke
Bg here fixing it now
My house is that cold after 2 days that my fridge turned it's off or onto stand by whatever fridges do.
I can see my breath in the living room.
I have a bobble hat on

Mine is a relatively new build and it can get cold.

The integrated garage was about 7 this morning and if I had had no heating on then I reckon the living room would have got down to about 10 last night.

These people claiming that they have the windows wide open and no heating and the houses are still at 20C when it is -4 outside at night are mostly WUMs IMO. At the very least they are not giving the full picture.
