To be sad and angry at the coalmine decision

It's insane. How? Why?

OP posts:
Willmafrockfit · 08/12/2022 07:33

i spose they need the coal for the steel industry and are importing it?

PortiasBiscuit · 08/12/2022 07:33

People need fuel.. can’t rely on Russia anymore. It does feel retrogressive but none of these issues are simple.

SusiePevensie · 08/12/2022 07:33

It won't help with cost of living - takes too long to come onstream and anyway renewables are already cheaper.
It's Net Zero if you don't count the coal - kinda like saying a bacon sarnie is vegan if you don't count the bacon.

OP posts:
PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 08/12/2022 07:34

I think it's a good idea.

SusiePevensie · 08/12/2022 07:34

It's the wrong sort of coal for the steel industry - they're hoping to export it.

OP posts:
AsdaYellowTins · 08/12/2022 07:35

It's mostly going to be exported. This has nothing to do with fuel security and everything to do with profits. Its awful.

RobinRobinMouse · 08/12/2022 07:35

I strongly suspect money has exchanged hands to make this decision happen.

SlagathaChristie · 08/12/2022 07:37

Great for job creation, sorely needed in that area. Net Zero is a noble but upper-middle class game, doesn't do much for job creation.

RoseslnTheHospital · 08/12/2022 07:37

It's nearly all going to be for export. So not going to help with energy security.

SusiePevensie · 08/12/2022 07:37

People desperately need help staying warm - but this won't help. Investing in insulation could deliver results in weeks - this will take years and 85% is supposed to be exported anyway.

OP posts:
SusiePevensie · 08/12/2022 07:39

Insulation, renewables. There are jobs in net zero. And there are 1 million and 1 investments that gov't can make to provide jobs - doesn't have to be a goddamn coal mine.

DCwow · 08/12/2022 07:39

Excellent article in the Times which looks at this issue: “First new coal mine for 30 years may be a necessary evil.” I am now in favour.

Willmafrockfit · 08/12/2022 07:40

i thought it was specifically for the steel industry?

it does seem very backward

Pythonese · 08/12/2022 07:40

How are you going to make steel without coal ?.

lightand · 08/12/2022 07:41

Brilliant.

Assuming it is all straight and above board and a good financial decision.

TodayInahurry · 08/12/2022 07:43

China builds a new coal fired power station just about every week. Our electricity supply is unreliable and more and people are buying electric cars so we need more!

Theluggage15 · 08/12/2022 07:43

I think it’s great news.

gogohmm · 08/12/2022 07:45

It's for coke for the steel industry not energy. It's essential for making steel

Willmafrockfit · 08/12/2022 07:45

"Steel produced using coal may soon face penalties in the EU, where moves are under way to bring in “carbon border adjustment mechanisms” (CBAMs), which operate as tariffs on high-carbon, favouring lower-carbon products instead, such as steel made with renewable energy."

May face penalties, moves are underway.
but for Now it will work?

sst1234 · 08/12/2022 07:57

Where do you think steel comes from, OP? It’s not magiced up with good intentioned. Needs coal for production.

I suspect what these morally outraged green saviour really want is for steel to be imported or for steel industry to close down. Do explain how either of those things is better. Didn’t think that far ahead, then?

This isn't for the steel industry.

Willmafrockfit · 08/12/2022 08:07

it is for the steel industry

The government have admitted that this is unlikely to have an impact on domestic steel production. It will be exported to countries with lower environmental standards, further afield than Europe, who won't touch it. Facts are uncomfortable, but you should acquaint yourself with them. That money could be invested in other projects, resulting in better and more sustainable (in both senses) jobs.

Willmafrockfit · 08/12/2022 08:15

i expect this is a quick fix solution.

Ringmaster27 · 08/12/2022 08:18

I feel like I went to bed last night, travelled throughout a time warp and woke up in 1922 😳
Coal mine opened, a Putsch in Germany….what next?! 😬
