To keep my child from school

Email from school with confirmed cases of strep a ! Would you keep your child at home in this case ? Not really sure what to do

No, I wouldn’t.

I understand your concerns. I have young children in school myself. But you have to remember that the tragic cases in the press are very rare.

Strep A is very treatable. I know it’s easier said than done but worrying will help nothing.

girlmom21 · 07/12/2022 15:35

Is your child clinically vulnerable?

Footballmyarse · 07/12/2022 15:35

I would keep a vigilant eye on them but that is all.

SeenAndNot · 07/12/2022 15:36

No I wouldn’t. It’s a very treatable disease and major complications are very rare.

ofwarren · 07/12/2022 15:36

Yes, but my son is CEV

No, it wouldn't occur to me to do so.

LlynTegid · 07/12/2022 15:39

No, though I would reinforce messages about hand washing, cleanliness etc.

bloodywhitecat · 07/12/2022 15:39

Yes but he is CEV, I wouldn't if my child wasn't.

Notanotherusername4321 · 07/12/2022 15:41

No.

part of the reason we have so many serious cases is children haven’t been exposed over covid lockdowns.

immigrant002 · 07/12/2022 15:42

I never get an appointment to the gp last two times they were sick i called at 8 was number 20th in the queue had to call 111 and wait another 24 hours before my child got antibiotics (she had an ear infection )
This is what terrifies me ! Also he had low neutrophils before they are ok nos

No. I am a TA and my daughter attends my school. We have multiple cases and no one has been kept off just in case. Hasn’t even occurred to me.

Venetiaparties · 07/12/2022 15:49

For those with very young babies and toddlers or anyone clinically vulnerable, yes I would consider finishing school early this winter.

We have multiple cases in our school, my dd has had strep, it is not nice but she is recovering. Albeit slowly.

For most children it will be fine, but I do understand why you are worried.

Both of mine have strep A at the moment, they're watching TV and looking unwell. One also has low neutrophils.

We have antibiotics.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 07/12/2022 15:57

There's finishing school early but not this early!

underneaththeash · 07/12/2022 15:58

Sorry - basically it's gone round both schools and multiple children are currently off unwell, but not very unwell.

immigrant002 · 07/12/2022 15:58

@GaggleOfSwans yes everything is working great i should not be scared at all really people get appointments and abulances when needed Hmm

Did you get antibiotics easily and quickly ?

You'll have cases of strep a about a 100 x a year in schools - usually it's tonsillitis. You've never kept your kids off for a case of tonsillitis in their class before have you?

Well since i had kids i have never heard of children dying from it and the nhs was relatively functional

neverbeenskiing · 07/12/2022 16:03

I'm sure I've read that its contagious up to 7 days before symptoms start, so if its confirmed that its now going around school then those children have already been exposed, no point keeping them off.

Mariposista · 07/12/2022 16:05

Nope, the very reason we have such a drama with strep is schools being closed during covid.

2tired2bewitty · 07/12/2022 16:09

If it’s the email I’ve just received from school it says ‘suspected’, do it might not even be strep a/scarlet fever.

Don’t deny your child the fun of the run up to Christmas for another year.
