Please advise - second line antibiotic for strep A

What is it ? And how long should you wait until you give it ?

They don't even think my DD has strep. But have prescribed amoxicillin anyway, just in case. ( yesterday )

I called back, saying that her fever is pretty high and her behaviour is pretty sad and down in the dumps /miserable. They asked how many doses I had given, it's been 5 doses so far. So now they want to put her on a different antibiotic, even though they think it's viral anyway..

But I'm noticing that actually, she's a bit better today. Her doses of fever reducing meds are not wearing off quite as quickly as they were yesterday.

We had a fever of 40 in the night and yesterday, so a little scary.

So I am unsure if I want to switch her antibiotics now. I thought it took 2-3 days anyway for antibiotics to work ?

Confused.

Given strep A cases, I would be listening to dr's advice.

Sadbeigechildren · 06/12/2022 14:26

I would follow the advice.

Doc was just so flippant and quick and didn't really want to explain. I don't mind switching, I'm just worried about making it worse.

But you called the doctor because you felt your DD was getting worse. They are just being cautious that she’s not responding well to that antibiotic.

Siameasy · 06/12/2022 14:58

I had the same thing when DD was younger with an infection in both ears and throat at the same time. We completed the course of one and got given another as it was hanging around. It was amox and erythromycin but not sure which order

Itisbetter · 06/12/2022 15:01

The Dr understands your dds situation and has decided what to do. Your feelings are unlikely to be as effective as years of medical training. Either follow advice or phone and explain why you aren’t going to.

ShirleyPhallus · 06/12/2022 15:03

I mean this kindly but it is absolutely bananas to get advice from an anonymous internet forum instead of listening to proper medical advice

Numbat2022 · 06/12/2022 15:09

It may be that the antibiotic she's on isn't very effective for her. I would just switch, unless the fever has completely broken which it doesn't sound like it has. And make sure you complete the course!

I think it probably won't harm. But when I spoke to doc, I thought her fevers were still as extreme as yesterday. All her fever meds would wear off after 1-2 hours and she'd be so so miserable, whimpering in pain. Her temp would then rise quite dramatically - up to 40. I haven't given her pain meds now for 4 hours and she is OK, no fever.

I'm just worried to switch and then the new one won't work ! Unlikely, I hope.

Amox would have been the first one

Why do you think Mumsnet can give better advice than your doctor?

Maybe someone has been in a similar position.

Just gathering information, rather than basing decisions solely on Mumsnet, but I don't need to explain myself to you, or anyone really.

I think as a rule of thumb if you are reluctant to voice your feelings to the Dr they’re probably not very well thought out.
