To worry that DD's room is too cold?

DD (20 months) is in a 2.5 tog sleeping bag in her cot, the temperature is reading as 18 degrees in her room and it does feel cold in there to me. There's an oil radiator plugged in but it's not really doing much to heat the room. I've had the heating on a timer this evening but it's gone off now - can't afford to keep it on much longer as my bill is circa £400 this month already 😢

Will she be OK?

She’ll be fine.

Get a thicker sleeping bag if concerned about room temps and heating costs.

susiesuelou · 05/12/2022 20:23

She's in the thickest one I could get, didn't realise they had thicker than that. I'll have another look. Thanks

Honestly she'll be fine, she's 20 months.

Has she a vest on under her baby grow?

Zanatdy · 05/12/2022 20:24

She will probably wake up if she’s cold. Maybe add a blanket too

03X · 05/12/2022 20:24

18 degrees is absolutely fine!!

What do you mean will she be fine?
What did you do last winter?

Is she waking up from the cold?

18 over night is really not cold.

MarshaBradyo · 05/12/2022 20:26

Lullaby Trust www.lullabytrust.org.uk/safer-sleep-advice/baby-room-temperature/

A room temperature of 16-20°C – with light bedding or a lightweight, well-fitting baby sleep bag– is comfortable and safe for sleeping babies.

Fairislefandango · 05/12/2022 20:26

18 degrees is fine. That's what I normally have my thermostat on.

Yes long sleeved vest, babygrow and 2.5 tog sleeping bag

Honestly 18 degrees is perfect sleeping temperature for much younger babies let alone a toddler.

HereComeTheGrannies · 05/12/2022 20:28

Lullaby Tryat say 16-20° is optimal for sleeping. It’s been dropping below 14 in DDs and she’s fine tbh in a 3.5tog bag (from jojo mama Bebe ) and layers.

Baconand · 05/12/2022 20:28

I wouldn’t want it any hotter! Babies and toddlers are safer in cooler rooms rather than hot. We aimed for 18 in DD’s
It is 17.2 in my 3 yo’s room. It will drop to about 16 eventually overnight.

18 over night is really not cold.

I just mean will she be warm enough. It's colder than it's ever been in our house at the moment.

We co slept when she was little so last winter she was in bed with us. Her room feels really cold. It's part of an extension on the house so I wonder if that's why.

Blow heaters are better then the oil ones just cover or leave unattended

Somethingsnappy · 05/12/2022 20:31

You can get 3.5 tog sleeping bags with detachable sleeves, for temperatures colder than you have currently. But 2.5 tog at 18 degrees is fine and pretty optimal really.

susiesuelou · 05/12/2022 20:34

Thanks everyone. Seems I'm worrying unnecessarily. I've seen the temperature is due to drop to -3 overnight where we are by Thursday so I'm just panicking a little.

Its 17.1 degrees in my dd's room currently and will drop to about 14 over night. They are in a vest, fleecy pjs, fluffy socks, 10.5 tog duvet and i will add a fleece blanket when i go to bed. A cooler bedroom is far healthier than a hot one she will be fine

Fleabigg · 05/12/2022 20:40

Lullaby Trust recommend 16-20 as the ideal overnight sleeping temperature so you really don’t need to be concerned about 18. It isn’t cold. If anything that would have been too warm for my DD at that age.

If she was cold she would wake you up and let you know. She will be fine!
Buy some fleecy pyjamas if you’re worried about it getting colder.

33goingon64 · 05/12/2022 20:45

If she's cold, she'll cry. If she's too hot it can end in tragedy as babies can't cool themselves and they overheat without crying.

bravelittletiger · 05/12/2022 20:51

Absolutely fine. Ours is between 16 and 17 at the moment and my 14 month old sleeps in a vest, sleepsuit and 2.5tog. The older one sleeps in normal Jim jams with a light duvet.

Illumicrateme · 05/12/2022 21:25

Vertbaudet do some beautiful higher tog sleeping bnags with detachable sleeves. Highly recommend.

Herbert1 · 05/12/2022 23:20

She'll be fine. My 10 month DD is in exactly the same at 18.

We have a 3.5 tog from Asda for when it gets colder. Not to my taste but well priced for a sleeping bag that thick!
