Christmas train strikes

AIBU to wish the train strike situation could just be sorted out?

Theyve just announced strikes right over Christmas. My family were coming to stay with me and now they can’t. I’ve had to cancel so many visits and trips since these strikes began. I wish they’d just reach an agreement already.

They will get another job? There are plenty of jobs out there.

Oh, that's sorted then. I don't know what they are making such a fuss about Hmm

It's not sorted, but there are options. If someone wants to work, there are jobs out there. It might not be perfect but there are opportunities out there.

They might even get a good redundancy payout. Redundancy is not all doom and gloom. I know plenty of people use it as a way to retrain, or find a new job in a field they hadn't thought of and they love it.

FFS, 'redundancy is not all doom and gloom' - that comment is genuinely pathetic.

The striking workers won't have pay on those days. They are fighting for their future jobs. They are people with feelings too.

Your lunch is not the biggest thing in the world.

They get strike pay from the unions

The ignorance is strong here. I feel it's a waste of a good discussion engaging with you tbh.

No they fucking don't

Zone2NorthLondon · 05/12/2022 21:07

It’s not pointless to raise the superficiality of the myopic bleating about individual inconvenience whilst ignoring the causes and roots of an industrial dispute

snoodles · 05/12/2022 21:08

It's not pathetic, I've been through it.

Yes, there are plenty of shit jobs out there.

But the railway workers want decent jobs and in a democracy, they are entitled to strike. UK has one of the toughest set of rules on strikes, the unions are not doing this for fun.

From the private sector which typically contracts with recessions redundancy is the norm when demand is down.

Yes it’s tough emotionally but it happens

hamstersarse · 05/12/2022 21:08

It’s a tough situation, I can see it from both sides.

At my local station, it is a manned ticket office at peak times but no one ever buys their ticket from him, they use their phone or the machine literally next to it. It’s technology making that role redundant as far as I can see? Do we just keep roles for the sake of it?

I have been involved in some strike negotiations and successfully diverted a few. It’s never just about the issues the unions report, there’s always more to it. But my experience is both sides get entrenched in their positions (unions and govt) and they need a third party to start the dialogue again. Same as in many high conflict situations 🤷‍♀️

I don’t think there’s much going on in this situation to actually negotiate and talk with humility and reason so it’ll likely drag on some time

Then don't! I'm fine with that. Those are my thoughts, you don't need to respond at all.

I think the majority of people don’t care. Personally I can wfh. I just schedule my wfh for when the trains strike. They are hitting other low earners who cannot work from home. The high earner wfh and don’t really care.

Yes, but no one else gives a shit. Why are you posting about it here? Moan about it in your team whatsapp group Confused

Zodfa · 05/12/2022 21:10

I'm not one to blindly support any and all strikes, but currently the workers are the only people interested in giving passengers the railway they actually want (with ticket offices and guards and everything).

because it’s a post about the strikes and people are calling me unreasonable for being disappointed. I forgot this was mumsnet, normal human behaviour not acceptable.

anyway enjoy your train debates, plenty of people in the real world having their life’s affected who are allowed to be disappointed and upset about it.

Yes, absolutely. It has been explained over and over on the main news bulletins when the workers and their union officials get any air time.

An unstaffed staion is a scary place for lone travellers, a tough place for travellers with disabilities or new to the area.

It is not just about buying a ticket.

Newuser82 · 05/12/2022 21:12

@carefulcalculator thanks. Either way it would be helpful if someone would release information about the schedule.!

The response to you was aggressive. Don’t worry about it, it’s fine to mention your life

snoodles · 05/12/2022 21:13

@carefulcalculator shit jobs?
They are jobs, and they pay the bills. What is a shit job? Who should do the 'shit jobs'? You're being quite aggressive, I know you're passionate about this topic but there is a way to engage with people that isn't being horrible.

FleasNavidad · 05/12/2022 21:13

What? @user7845209 no they don't 🤣🤣

I support the strikes, and with a bit of luck it'll keep dickhead BIL trapped in that there London for Christmas.

You're not unreasonable to be disappointed and you've got just as much of a right to respond as anyone else. You could say 'why are you posting about that on here' to literally any post on this whole website lmao, some people are insane.

It is not about normal human behaviour, it is about being so self-centred as to only care about your own little lunch rather than the bigger picture - the country is falling apart, the government is encouraging that process.

My thoughts entirely. I know no one who cares; people are just making other transport arrangements or doing things locally.
