I cycle and I drive.

I drive to the station ( live in the hills) usually behind a number of darkly ,clad minimal lighting, unfit wavering mamils who make overtaking safely impossible and now they take the short cut down a single country lane!

Nothing like raising the blood pressure at 0600 on a cold morning as you see your train disappear down the track!

However, today the CFers really iced the cycling cake. So I missed my train due to some unfit mamil wandering up the hill all over the place, stopping for breath - still no place to stop ( well there was if he had gone 10m further on!)

I wait for the next train and board. No seats - such is life. Except for the fact there were 5 ( you can only see 4 in the picture) allegedly fold up bicycles wedge in the spaces of 5 seats and the disabled bay. All the delightful CFer cyclists had then gone and sat down -so 10 seats used up by 5 people.

One brave man, picked up the smallest bike and threw it on top of the large collection on the right and sat down - he gained a round of applause.

I will happily share the road with cyclists and cars alike depending on my mode of transport but I am absoutely pissed off that I then have to share the seats with bicycles that get priority for space over paying customers. Entitled behaviour or what!

You can not get away from them...!

Obvs they never take the ribbon down - but I guess it's not littering if they use bikes and not in cars. Or something. Confused

Most people do know what a MAMIL is.

yes it's a derogatory term usually used by fat unfit people driving Chelsea tractors.

I didn't know - I've just googled it.

I genuinely thought the OP was misspelling 'mammal'!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/12/2022 21:54

I would think almost everyone knows what a MAMIL is, unless they’ve been living under a rock with no social media.

I was going to say YABU about them being on the roads. But absolutely YANBU about them taking up seats and the disabled area with their bikes! That does take the biscuit!

Devoutspoken · 05/12/2022 21:55

I would have thought statistically one is more likely to be delayed by traffic jams made up of sheer weight of traffic on the roads

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 05/12/2022 22:04

Very active on many social media platforms here and never heard of mamil before.

iswintercoming · 05/12/2022 22:10

I absolutely despise the relentless entitlement of all MAMILs - wankers the lot of them.

Sprouttreesareamazing · 05/12/2022 22:14

On a driving test I was told it was a fail if I made another vehicle slow, swerve or stop.
Shame it doesn't apply to cyclists.
Once had one wobble at a roundabout, sat on my bonnet, gathered his balance and pedal off! Not a kiss my arse or nothing...

Loics · 05/12/2022 22:23

This is MN, OP, cyclists can do no wrong! They could pick their bike up, crack you over the head with it and scream at you to give them your seat, and they would still be in the right because they choose to cycle instead of drive. 😅

Seriously though, if course YANBU. I'm surprised someone didn't chuck a bike out their way sooner on a packed train, it's rude and inconsiderate - they should either be standing with their bikes or have them on their lap if small enough when folded (as long as it doesn't take up skVe on neighboring seats).

I'm neither fat or drive a Chelsea tractor. I do hate lycra clad knobheads though.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/12/2022 22:40

I wonder if there will be an increase in head on collisions, now that cyclists are supposed to be further out. And people loose patience and overtake I got stuck behind one the other day. (Who I think had a death wish, as he pulled out of a side road completely oblivious to traffic) Wasn't safe to overtake, bit some one less patient may have done.

Testina · 05/12/2022 22:44

“allegedly fold up bicycles”
Your own photo is evidence that there’s “alleged” about it 🤣

AllCatsAreBeautiful · 05/12/2022 20:29

YABU. Cyclists have as much right to the road as you. It sounds like you need to leave more time for your journey if you’re missing your train.

Of course they have a right to cycle. If you read the OPs post, it’s mainly about the fact that the cyclists were so self entitled that they took over 5 seats on a full train to accommodate their bikes.

TheYummyPatler · 05/12/2022 23:27

I think, given the traffic conditions on your commute, you might need to leave earlier. 🤷🏻‍♀️

FleasNavidad · 05/12/2022 23:31

Never heard of a mamil

Devoutspoken · 06/12/2022 10:14

Sprouts- does that apply to cars slowing down bikes as well?

ichundich · 06/12/2022 10:29

In Germany you have yo buy a kids ticket for your bike. Way to go IMO. The problem is the lack of proper cycling paths though.

I'd say it's descriptive. 'Chelsea Tractors' is derogatory though (I don't drive one or approve of them by the way).

Bog · 06/12/2022 10:44

Don't worry OP, MN hates AND loves cyclists and runners.

TooHotToRamble · 06/12/2022 13:13
  1. If you regularly come across cyclists or other slower road users on our way to work you need to leave earlier. They are entitled to use the road as much as you are regardless of how fit or unfit they are.
  1. Was there somewhere else the folding bikes could have been stored? If not, then surely your issue is with the train company with their poor train design rather than the cyclists who appear to have tried to put their bikes as out of way of the throughways on their train as much as possible. If there was another more appropriate place for the bikes YANBU.
