So last night at about 4am, our smoke alarm decided to go off. We checked the entire house and there wasn’t any smoke or fires, and nothing was left plugged in or switched on. I can’t figure out why it went off or what caused it! It was quite frightening.

The smoke alarm itself is working and isn’t damaged and it’s not overly sensitive either- it’s not the kind of alarm that goes off when dinner is being cooked! It’s only ever gone off if there’s enough smoke, eg when something was burning in the grill etc. The batteries aren’t flat either- they were replaced and checked recently. It’s working fine today and hasn’t gone off since.

It was really spookey actually and I got such a fright. I feel like instinct completely kicked in and without even thinking about it I sort of threw myself out of bed and ran downstairs to see what was happening. I got such a fright though and it was scary, just cant figure out what could have caused it! I didn’t have to switch it off either, it switched itself off after 2 minutes or so.

Our carbon monoxide detector went off in the night once, turns out an overripe Merlin was setting it off

dust sets our smoke alarm off

Well I don't think she was. I think it must have been frightening. I am allowed to have a different opinion to others you know.

Of course you are.

It was just the bit where you accused others of being 'unkind and horrible', that made you look rather silly.

RatSlave · 05/12/2022 19:30

Our 3rd floor smoke alarm went off once at 3am it was set off by a very impressive storm! Has never happened since but it happened multiple times that night every time the lightning hit.

People are being unnecessarily unkind and horrible in their responses so far OP.

I doubt they would be so calm and sneery themselves if they were abruptly woken up from slumber by a fire alarm at 4am in their house, immediately thinking their house was burning down. Flowers

Very confused by this. There were two replies before yours, neither were unkind or horrible. If you genuinely believe that they were, @Keyansier , could you please point out what those posters said that was unkind and horrible? As all I can see is posters trying to advise the OP, and you trying to stir up a bit of bad feeling and upset the OP.

God it fairly puts the fear of god into you doesn't it? Our carbon monoxide alarm went off at 5am a few months ago. My husband hared downstairs totally starkers as we thought it was the fire alarm and I was in an absolute panic grabbing the kids and thinking about whether I should go for the front door or wait till husband shouted if it was safe.

Turns out ours was a dodgy boiler, but the adrenaline from that alarm waking us all up was with me all day! At least we know it works now.

God I know what you mean. Mine went off at night recently and I raced downstairs in a panic. I thought it must be the batteries so put new ones in and it did it again! I’ve now got to get a new alarm as it keeps going off randomly. Scares the bejesus out of me.

Do you mean to say that a spider rubbed his willy on the fire alarm and set it off?

Love this!!!

bigdecisionstomake · 05/12/2022 19:35

Tiny spiders and flies or just dust getting in can cause this. You can buy a compressed air cannister to blast them with to clean anything out that shouldn't be in there.

Agree it's a bit panic causing when they suddenly go off in the middle of the night though!

DogInATent · 05/12/2022 19:35

It could be that the alarm is failing. They don't last forever, even if you change the batteries. Check for a label with an expiry date.

TheIsaacs · 05/12/2022 19:36

Ours did this. Few weeks ago, a power outage happened twice in really quick succession. Even though the battery was ok, it confused the unit and it went off in the middle of the night.

Blueblell · 05/12/2022 19:43

I would get a new one - definitely dust is a problem with smoke alarms
