my house is 16c - is that too cold?

I work from home but try not to heat the house during the day so only for one hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening. It's 3.30pm and the thermometer on my desk says it's currently 16c. It obviously feels cold and I am under blankets. Not sure we can afford to heat it during the day but seriously does everyone else think that would warrant putting the heating on?

I wfh and haven’t every out the heating on during the day, apart from when the cleaner is here (so, an hour a week). But: I work in the smallest room and often have DH in there with me and it’s got all the computers in so warms up quickly. Coming into the living room which is 14/15° is pretty chilly though.

IClaudine · 05/12/2022 16:54

We are both home but don't have the heating on in the day, just mornings and evenings.

Depending on where in the house it is between 14 and 15. That is fine if moving around but too cold if sitting still, so have heated blankets.

Might have to put it on in the day later this week though as it is going to get very cold!

Yourwan · 05/12/2022 16:54

Ours is at 16.2 right now. I'm not really cold tbh. We've always been on the broke side though have never been ones to have the thermostat set to 21 or whatever. The heat goes on when someone is unbearably cold, goes off when they've warmed up. We have electric blankets on the beds and electric throws for when watching TV or whatever.

GreenWhiteViolet · 05/12/2022 16:55

12.5 here at the moment. I've got layers on and I feel fine. Putting the heating on for a couple of hours in the evenings now as I don't want it to dip too much lower than that.

But if you're cold at 16, you're cold at 16. People are different, as these threads prove!

ThinWomansBrain · 05/12/2022 16:56

All open plan? including bedrooms?
Find a small place in the home to work from, buy an oil filled radiator.

I would look ridiculous wearing a coat and hat to take work meetings.

What’s with the competitive coldness on MN? So many people ‘I only turn my heating on when it hits -5’. Fine if that’s they life you want to live but why do they always have to act like they are better people for living in a freezing house.

How in any way was I trying to be better than anyone else? I just said I was surprised. Heating is bloody expensive!

megletthesecond · 05/12/2022 16:59

That would be much too cold for me. I'd be happy running in it outside but not be able to sit still even if wrapped up. Breathing in cold air makes me cold.

Notanotherone6 · 05/12/2022 16:59

It's too cold for me. We have our thermostat at 18 but we also have the means to pay for it. I might think differently if we didn't.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 05/12/2022 17:02

@StollenAway fwiw I agree with you, I'm not being competitive at all I couldn't give a crap how others heat their homes but I did comment to DP after a recent similar thread on here that I was surprised at how many people had their thermostat set to 20+ all day. It's just something I've never done! But nothing wrong with doing that if people can afford it!

FourTeaFallOut · 05/12/2022 17:02

16c is far too cold for me, I'd be miserable.

I don’t think they do think that.

Everyone’s just answering the question. No need to be put out imo

HelenHywater · 05/12/2022 17:05

16 is too cold for me. But you know what you can afford. I have my thermostat set to 17/18.

TenoringBehind · 05/12/2022 17:06

Mine is 15/16 degrees too. I think below that starts to feel too cold and miserable,
I tend to interchange periods of sitting still and working with vacuuming or something vigorous, and then I don’t feel cold, but I appreciate that might not be possible for everyone.

Boooooot · 05/12/2022 17:08

Would be perfect for me but I have a very thin husband who is always cold so it’s currently at 20 🥵

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 05/12/2022 17:12

Thermostat set to 18 but we try not to click it onto constant during the day. It’s on 6-8am and 4-8pm.
For WFH we have calor gas heaters to spot heat the rooms we are in. They are very effective and we tend to only need it on for half an hour a few times a day.

NewBootsAndRanty · 05/12/2022 17:13

I've never had to have my home above 18 before. I have no idea if I can afford it once it gets colder.

Lots of people don't have a choice but to live in a freezing house. It's not about wanting to live that way.

Mammajay · 05/12/2022 17:15

18 degrees daytime recommended

I’m not talking about those people, I’m specially talking about all the posters who come out of the woodwork on these posts bleating on about how they would be ‘sweltering if their house was a degree over 14!’ And they can’t believe people expect to not live in cold, miserable conditions.

keepyertrapshut · 05/12/2022 17:16

Mine is 11.5!

Anonymouseposter · 05/12/2022 17:21

16 degrees is the minimum temperature for a company employing sedentary workers, it's a bit cold for sitting around. Below that temperature office workers would not be expected to work. It's on the cold side and if the house never gets above that temperature you might start to get problems.

MilkyYay · 05/12/2022 17:23

Im fine at 16-18. I have a thick fleece pullover, fleece lined leggings & sheepskin slippers.i have a thermos of hot water and have a tea every couple of hours.

Im not comfortable at 22-23, i start feeling too hot. My ideal is 19-20.

Pleasecreateausername13 · 05/12/2022 17:26

Mines sitting at 21 but thats because I’ve a 19 month old who refuses to wear slippers or jumpers or jackets, so I’m having to keep her warm. Nightmare.

ICanBoogieWoogie · 05/12/2022 17:27

16 degrees in our house can vary, depending what room we’re in.

The back bathroom and bedroom are bloody cold but the front rooms are quite warm as they get the sun for most of the day.

I keep the thermostat in the kitchen and this morning it was 16 degrees (up on yesterday’s temp of 14) so heating went on at 6:30 for an hour.

I don’t WFH so it then goes on for a couple of hours in the evening.

Georgyporky · 05/12/2022 17:28

Insulation is very important, Google for ideas.
