Melatonin from Mexico

Filbertfishlips · 03/12/2022 22:07

Going on hols to Mexico in January.
I have a child who would benefit from melatonin for help in getting to sleep.
I can but it over the counter in Mexico.
Is it a more harmful version than what is prescribed in the UK?

I buy regularly from the USA from a company called piping rock. Never had an issue.

AllLopsided · 03/12/2022 23:47

If you happen to go to France it's available OTC here too.

Before it was, I used to buy it from the US via eBay, which at the time was no more or less risky regarding customs interception than ordering now from the EU. But it's not a huge investment so worth a try. From the US you can get 10mg gel caps, open them and just use a pinch at a time. They will last for ages!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 04/12/2022 01:05

I’m in the US and would not worry about pharmacy bought drugs in MX. Especially something like melatonin which would be OTC here.

Shockingly (yeah read this sarcastically) Mexico does have real healthcare and people use said healthcare successfully every day. They even have qualified doctors and pharmacists who are highly educated.

The ignorance in these comments are sadly not shocking but highly disappointing.

Can someone please recommend somewhere to get melatonin from for a 14 year old. Waiting for diagnosis and she struggles so much with sleep. It's affecting everything so badly.

I wouldn't be medicating a child with a drug bought from a third world country

OP could you pick up something from over the counter for Sarah’s racism?

Letsjumpthebroomstick · 04/12/2022 01:29

@Sarahcoggles @AccioChocolate and I would say "get sick" or "become a wee bit poorly" because I'm Scottish and not trying put someone down.
Also "third world country" is a really offensive term. I buy Melatonin online from Germany online. I'm sure Mexico is fine as well.

Mummieslncorporated · 04/12/2022 01:45

Sarahcoggles · 03/12/2022 22:56

Mexico is still technically a third world country.
But that aside, personally I wouldn't feel happy giving my child a drug that was prescription only in my home country. Maybe I'm being over cautious.

I love the fact that you know it's 'technically' a third world country, but you omitted to state why.

It's nothing to do with economics, or poor health care.

It's because it's not aligned to nato or the Warsaw pact. Yes, I have Google too.

I'm not sure why you think being aligned with NATO will have an effect on the quality of the melatonin for sale though.

I've been hospitalised in a third majority world country. The care was utterly fantastic, the staff were kind, the other patients were delightful and they probably saved my life. Oh and the medications were completely fine.

I've joked that if I could buy travel insurance in the UK and get 'repatriated' to another country for medical care, I would.

allthelittlelights · 04/12/2022 02:34

I always go to Mex for dental work and I've been sick there. Sorry, but the healthcare is far superior to the UK.

chipsandpeas · 04/12/2022 02:53

before i stocked up on my last visit to the US i used to buy from vitamin grocer website - had different types i prefered the natrol brand when buying from there

mathanxiety · 04/12/2022 02:55

Thousands of Americans go to Mexico for healthcare and dental care. The care available is excellent.

There are also Walmarts and Walgreens dotted all over Mexico, selling ranges of otc medicines very similar to the range available in the US. I don't think you need to worry about the quality...

In US Walmarts you can buy containers on 1mg melatonin tablets, so you can take one or more than one, as needed.

Melatonin is sold in the dietary supplement section along with various vitamins.

Kennykenkencat · 04/12/2022 03:15

I used to get melatonin from the US as Dh worked out there for a good part of the month,

Lockdown and I couldn’t get any . Saw an article on Ashwagandha and bought some from H&B and found it was good
Then saw it in Costco. I take 2 each night and it knocks me out
Definitely worth a try

When I was in Melatonin I was taking 25mg each night of the fast acting stuff

Uk doctors can only prescribe a much lower amount and only the slow acting type which was useless

Coyoacan · 04/12/2022 03:26

I live in Mexico and use Melatonin. I don't know what strength your child is prescribed but mine is 3 mg sublingual and costs about 50 pence for 40 tablets.

It is called Melatonina in Spanish.

As for third world country, we at least have a health service where we can be seen by a doctor and be hospitalised if necessary

mrsbyers · 04/12/2022 03:29

Just a word of caution with melatonin , it can make you very poorly if you have stomach issues like Crohns , I bought some pre flight in US didn’t read the small print and by the time I got to Heathrow I was experiencing the worst instant flare ever - I just wanted to flag , I had
boight a huge tub too which went in the bin

wonderstuff · 03/12/2022 22:56

I buy melatonin for myself from US online pharmacy, in US it seems to be in same category as vitamins. Lots of kids get melatonin on prescription in the UK. I would recommend talking to your GP rather than MN though.

its Easier to go to Mexico than try and get a gp appointment!
were under an adhd specialist here In the Uk however we can’t get an appointment with them for at least another 6mths either!

Filbertfishlips · 04/12/2022 09:39

Thank you all for your replies, very informative, I’m definitely going to give it a try short term until we can see our specialist here.

I buy it for myself for jet lag when I go abroad but I wouldn't buy it for a child, if your child needs it go through a Dr. I only used it a few times for jet lag but I got side effects, there will be a reason its prescription only here, adults are free to do what they please but wouldn't risk it with a child!!!

CrunchyCarrot · 04/12/2022 09:44

I buy a prescription medicine from an online Mexican store - good quality and does the job. Can't get it prescribed here.

I also use 'get sick' because I grew up in Australia, still use that expression 40 years later! Does it really matter whether it's 'ill' or 'sick'? Means the same!

Sarahcoggles · 04/12/2022 09:54

So many angry people on this thread. It's sad really

crimewatcher · 04/12/2022 09:55

It's fine. I bring about 20 tubs of melatonin back to UK from Canada every year. I also bought other pharmaceuticals in Mexico for my own personal use. All good.

Please don't tell posters to just ask their doctor. In some areas it can only be prescribed by Cahms and you have to do sleep hygiene classes and sacrifice a goat and still might not get it

It's ludicrous that children with sn are being left to suffer and their parents are paying the price. It's an OTC supplement in most of the world. The NHS is not always right.

Dose of castor oil should sort her out and she won't even need to go to Mexico for it
