To go to a&e?

I've been having left flank/abdominal pain for 2 weeks now. I've seen my gp on monday who thinks it's possibly kidney stones or some thing pancreatic . I've had a CT scan on Thursday. My GP said if it gets worse go to a&e. So after another bad night I think I'm going to go? I feel guilty as it's very painful but I don't have a fever or vomiting or anything. I've also got a high pain threshold so I keep wondering if it's bad enough and i should go? What would you do?

GP told you to go if it gets worse / it’s worse so go. If it’s possibly pancreas (or gallbladder, though you’ve not mentioned that, it could be related to pancreas issues) related it could develop into pancreatitis which is not only incredibly painful but needs treatment quickly; if kidney stones that’s widely believed to be one of the most painful things to go through.

Hope you get seen relatively quickly and are soon settled, if not sorted x

Best go OP. Until you're sitting in A and E will you know whether it's a good idea. Def look up the current wait times of your nearest emergency departments to inform which ones you go to. They're not a compassionate bunch where we are so we try to avoid at all costs.

kiwiiem · 03/12/2022 06:40

If you don’t go, you’ll most likely exhaust yourself all weekend with wondering if you should and it’ll only make you feel worse. Best case, they sort you out. Worst case, you’ve put your mind at ease.

ZooMount · 03/12/2022 06:52

I'd go if that's what the gp has said. It's not like you haven't tried there first and it sounds like they've done all they can do for you. Sadly the only way to get further investigation is though a&e these days which is part of the problem. Just be prepared for a very very long wait!

lljkk · 03/12/2022 06:57

Just go. This is the quietest time you could choose so go now.

lljkk · 03/12/2022 06:58

ps: and update us how long? Take stuff to do to fill the time.

Cwcwbird · 03/12/2022 06:58

You should absolutely do what the gp has advised. They are the ones with the medical qualifications who have examined you. Their advice is way more valuable than a bunch of unqualified people on the Internet who can't even see you.

Boxshibe · 03/12/2022 06:59

Thanks. I've got my charger. Downloaded some kindle books and a water bottle.
I'm thinking of going about 830. Should be quieter (I hope) and a new shift started.

Hope you are seen quickly! Take a portable charger if you can. Spent 9.5 hours at a and e last Sunday and they wouldn't let anyone charge anywhere

PronounsBaby · 03/12/2022 07:12

Are you better off going to an urgent care center/minor injury's unit? Honestly you really should avoid a&e unless it is life threatening....the hospitals are under such pressure and if you can decide what time you want to go, it really isn't an emergency

HungryandIknowit · 03/12/2022 07:13

I've also been told 8 / 8 30am is the best time to go. Good luck!

bakebeans · 03/12/2022 11:17

why have you have posted on here to ask the question and tell everyone your symptoms if you have already seen your GP and he's advised you to go?

Skiphopbump · 03/12/2022 11:24

I’ve had similar symptoms except I get a really intense pain under my ribs and should blades and left side - it last for a few hours and then doesn’t come back for a few weeks. I let my GP know when it happens and my blood tests show inflammation.

I was also told to go to A&E with the next episode which I did but of course hours later when I saw the Dr it had settled with the pains killers I was given - I had a CT which was clear so at least had some reassurance but no answers.

serenghetti2011 · 03/12/2022 11:26

I had similar in the summer likely kidney stones was peeing blood and felt dreadful. The triage nurse was an absolute bitch to me and told me I should’ve waited for the antibiotics to work. I literally was in agony couldn’t sleep etc nothing touched the pain. I felt grim then I stopped being able to pee which is why I went.

I did tell her I was a nurse and the doctor told me to come if I was still in the same level of pain in 12/24 hours and her attitude was shocking. I’d say go, I know how much pain I was in and I just needed something to help me that the out of hours doctor couldn’t provide which is why they told me to go. Hope you feel better soon

allboysherebutme · 03/12/2022 17:24

Hope she comes back to tell us she's okay. X

I'm back after waiting for about 4 hours to see a Dr. She thought something bowel related. She checked ct scan and apparently it's fine so I'm back to square one with the GP. The consultant thinks it could be an ulcer or something wrong with my bowels as well and recommended getting a colonoscopy and a vlook at my stomach for ulcers. I've to go back if I get a fever.
So good that there's nothing wrong but also bad that there's nothing wrong if you see what I mean!
Still got the pain and am taking naproxen.
