Keeping 4 month baby warm overnight

Expectingfirstbaby · 02/12/2022 22:57

Posting here for traffic. We have a 4 month old baby and we currently heat house for 5 hours a day. Our gas and elec currently costs £10 a day (gulp).

It's getting colder though and we want to keep her warm overnight so looking to just heat 1 room overnight so it stays at 18 degrees.

What are your recommendations? Any links items would be much appreciated

that's a warm room! We had a thermometer when dd was tiny and our room would go down to 13-14 degrees in the middle of the night. We had the heating coming on for a few hours in the middle of the night to keep it around 18.

In your case, it sounds a good temperature with a warm sleeping bag.

Blankets over a slew bag isn’t advised, either just blankets or just the sleeping bag.

There is a guide for what babies should wear online. At those temperatures I would have 2.5tog sleeping bag, long sleeve vest and babygro. Our room hovers around 16 so I have a 3.5tog sleeping bag for DS.

Depending on your budget you can buy merino wool babygrows from a company called superlative. That over a vest and 2.5 tog sleeping bag (white co sell nice ones) might work. I wouldn't be keen on 3.5 tog if the room is 20°C. Don't worry about her being too cold - she will wake you up!

Superlative should be superlove. Autocorrect

@Slinkyminky22 what is the difference between a sleep suit and a body suit please? (New mum over here!)

Bodysuit is a vest, so no legs, can be long or short sleeved. Sleepsuit has arms and legs.

Sleepsuit is a full onesie with feet. Bodysuit is like a vest, sleeveless/short sleeve/long sleeve, usually with poppers at the crotch. Of course depending on weather you'd use one or the other, or both.

I think various parts of the country will refer to them as different things :)

@MarianneVos @Slinkyminky22 thank you!

Just skimmed through the thread and seen them referred to as babygrows and vests as well lol.

They'll wake if they're cold 😊
I only use a 1 tog and blankets now they're over 1 and usually end up in with me at some point in the night, so don't want them overheating with a higher tog and body heat. Long sleeve vest, baby grow and thicker tog sleeping bag should do the trick

No way would I be heating a house for 1.5 hours before we get up, doesn't that make you wake up too warm?

ElizabethBest · 03/12/2022 07:45

Why don’t you turn the heating down in her room so she can’t overheat, and put her in the more appropriate sleeping bag? The jojo ones with sleeves are very good.

Get an oil filled radiator with a thermostat and basically shut yourself and baby in the bedroom overnight. Not ideal but how I coped with a winter new born baby and no central heating in the north of the UK. She's now 15 and perfectly healthy! Don't panic, as long as you and baby are warm. Electric blankets is a good option for you, but definitely not for the baby

I second an oil filled radiator.

My daughter hated a sleeping bag so we had to keep the room warm a different way without heating the whole house!

The room remained around 18-20 degrees overnight and all she wore was a vest and babygrow.

Get a 2.5 tog sleeping bag and ditch the blankets then vest and babygrow , I’d say a 3.5 is for when it’s really cold especially if the heatings coming on in the morning.

Yeah I'm surprised so many people use 3.5 tog bags but depends on house temperature and what they wear underneath too. My house sounds similar to OP's and we use a 2.5 tog with short sleeved vest and a warm fluffy sleepsuit, he never wakes from the cold.

I think getting rid of the blankets is a good idea OP, your baby will be getting more and more active in the next month or two and won't stay in the same spot all night. The sleeping bags are brilliant because they stay on no matter what.

Twizbe · 03/12/2022 08:38

Two winter newborns here.

Bed time was long sleeved vest, baby grow with intergrated scratch mits and a thick winter sleeping bad.

Herejustforthisone · 03/12/2022 09:49

Better too cold than too hot. When she’s cold, the worst that’ll happen is she’ll wake up. I think people panic about cold babies a bit too much.
