DH lost his job 2 weeks ago, he has another lined up but obviously the lack of earnings is going to affect us. Are we entitled to anything? How long do you have to put of work etc? I’ve never claimed anything before so do not want to be getting into trouble. We are hoping DH will be starting his new job in a few weeks.

I work 24 hours a week and only earn 14000

DH was on 50k so obviously it’s a lot of money to lose this month, we will really struggle on just my wage.

If you have savings over 16,000 you wouldn't be entitled to anything. Over 6,000 and UC is reduced by a percentage. Depending on how much.
I use entitledto benefits calculator to work out how much help I'd get. It's very easy to use. Hope your DH starts something soon

NewBootsAndRanty · 02/12/2022 17:01

You won't get into trouble for applying for help.

Jaquez · 02/12/2022 17:03

We don’t have savings

I'm not sure you'll be able to claim anything in time if he starts work in a few weeks? Only because my friend has just had to claim universal credit and she won't get anything now until the end of December.

Surprised no savings if he was earning 50k though!

Obbydoo · 02/12/2022 17:08

Can you increase your hours? Or your husband could get a bar job or retail? Great time to be looking for some temp work and better (and probably quicker!) than relying on benefits.

Wow @SlashBeef what an unhelpful and downright nasty comment. Not everyone has spare money at the end on the month to save

AnotherAppleThief · 02/12/2022 17:08

It's such a faff I'm not sure I would bother for that short a period of time.

Dreaming0ftomorrowing · 02/12/2022 17:10

He can apply for contributions based job seekers allowance it is I think £77 per week
Apply on line www.gov.uk
He will receive a letter
He will need to show his P45 & ID at job centre
Savings are disregarded for a certain time period , which will be specified

It wasn't nasty. Get a grip!

@SlashBeef yeah you're right, it was a really kind comment. My bad

Dreaming0ftomorrowing · 02/12/2022 17:13

Payments are not back dated
So put in the claim today

Whaleandsnail6 · 02/12/2022 17:14

I got made redundant in the summer. No savings and oh earns approx 1100 a month. 2 kids and a mortgage. I was able to claim jobseekers which is about £77 a week, which is deducted from universal credit claim. I think we got around £500 uc a month. I could be picky about what job I took in the first 12 weeks ( eg look for one in the same industry) but after that,I'd have had to take any job offered to not be sanctioned.

It wasn't nasty. On a joint income if £64,000 they really should have been able to put by enough to tide them over for a month or two. They may have extenuating circumstances to not be in that position, but it's not nasty to remark that your surprised they don't.

@Jaquez He should be able to pick up some casual work, it'll be far faster to get cash that way than via benefits.

I don't know if you'll qualify or not, all I am sure of is that it's a slow process.

uou might need to use overdraft/credit cards/ or borrow from family.

no idea of your situation, but as soon as he's working again you really need to build up an energy fund.

Are you able to work more hours?

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/12/2022 17:15

It's worth making a claim even if it's just for the national insurance contributions.

70billionthnamechange · 02/12/2022 17:15

Happy to disagree. I think when someone is clearly worried, making it clear you think they could have done better is quite nasty. But hey, we're all different and if they didn't mean to be nasty then I accept that, I just viewed it as such

If you rent, you may receive some payment for that too

PollyAmour · 02/12/2022 17:19

I'd be inclined to pick up some casual work over Christmas, lots of places are still advertising for seasonal staff. Much less faff than trying to claim benefits, from my experience. Even a couple of nights in a pub a week will make a difference. Does he have a start date for his new job?

SlashBeef · 02/12/2022 17:20

I was just surprised, not judgemental, not nasty. I'm surprised that an income that I consider to be decent doesn't enable someone to have any savings at this time. It's worrying in general.

Jaquez · 03/12/2022 05:37

We paid for a new kitchen before we knew he was going to lose his job. He has applied for delivery drivers etc but nobody is getting back to him.

Bullshit. Why would you be surprised without knowing their outgoings. And surprised enough to comment. It was nasty and pointless.

I hope he gets a new job sorted soon OP.

sneezingpandamum · 03/12/2022 05:49

I earn £70k and have no savings - I'm a single parent of 3 with childcare bills pushing £2k a month - it's not unusual not to have savings in this current economy!

Jaquez · 03/12/2022 05:55

I’m gutted we spent that money, hind sight and all that. I thought delivery jobs you can just go and do. Why is nobody getting back to him. He is waiting for his old company to get back to him but what the hell will we do without Decembers pay?
