So I'm at Manchester for the Christmas markets.
Spent £20 on a Greek sharing box to eat for lunch.
I ask for two forks and she tells me they've ran out and to get them from the Brazilian stand opposite.
So off I go and say "can I have two of the plastic forks please as the Greek stand have ran out"

She says "no I'm not allowed as you didn't buy food here, you can't expect them for free"
I said okay il buy a drink
She said no only food
The cheapest thing was £10
So I sad no
Aibu to think she could of gave me a plastic fork
Is this what the worlds came too?
She had a huge and I mean huge tub of cutlery

So we had to eat with our hands which was near impossible as it was coated in sauces etc

OP posts:

Amazing Brazil stall couldn't offer a one sentence explanation but MN has gone into it into depth!

They did tho

blubberyboo · 02/12/2022 19:16

yabu you should’ve went back to the Greek place and told them the other stall doesn’t want to find their customers and got them to buy the forks

HotChoxs · 02/12/2022 19:17

Cheesuswithallama · 02/12/2022 19:12

Yes a poor one in which you've spent time defending this business and people will avoid it!

ReedRite · 02/12/2022 19:17

thelobsterquadrille · 02/12/2022 18:31

The Greek stall should be more organised, or have the decency to "be nice" and sort the cutlery issue themselves, not send their customers over to beg for cutlery from someone else.

And it's not about helping out unless there's something in it for them, it's about not being taken advantage of.

‘Taken advantage of’ for a 0.00019 fork?!

Honestly, if I ever got to a place where I could feel someone was mugging me off for a 0.00019 plastic fork I think I’d give up.

ReedRite · 02/12/2022 19:20

thelobsterquadrille · 02/12/2022 18:18

Okay - so by that logic, why shouldn't the Greek stall "be nice" and explain the lack of cutlery beforehand, then? Instead of taking £20 of people's money and then telling them "oh, sorry, we have no cutlery so you can't actually eat what you've paid for".

Why is it down the Brazilian stall to explain their policy to a non-paying customer just because another business can't be bothered to organise themselves properly?

For the Brazilian stall, it's not about the price of a fork, it's the principle.

Er, when did I say the Greek stall shouldn’t have explained the lack of cutlery?! I specifically said they should have done in an earlier post. It was shoddy of them to sell the food and not explain the lack of cutlery first to give OP a chance to go elsewhere.

It’s not one or the other. BOTH stalls were out of order on the face of it. And both stalls failed to explain themselves.

ReedRite · 02/12/2022 19:22

HotChoxs · 02/12/2022 19:11

"Sorry we will don't have enough of these to give them out without food" would have sufficed, been quicker, and not allowed other customers to see their poor customer service skills!

Quite. I can say that in less than 10 seconds without talking too quickly.

Cheesuswithallama · 02/12/2022 19:22

It's never just one fork.

Again, would you think it's fine to walk with sarnie from elsewhere into subway and ask for lettuce? Or is it just stalls with limited storage where this is acceptable?
Because trust me. Few leaves of subway lettuce doesn't cost much more that that fork. Well 2 actually.

You missed the pint the op offered to buy a drink for £3 they wanted her to buy food for £10 when she already bought food . They could have at least sold a fork for £1 each .

Cheesuswithallama · 02/12/2022 19:28

I keep saying that it's obviously not just about money

Again, you're totally missing the point.

If Stall B give/sell cutlery to everyone that Stall G send over, they'll run out themselves and be in the same position.

Maybe they'll then have to close (temporarily or for the day) to go and replace their supplies, and then they'll lost a lot more money than the cost of a cheap fork.

It's not Stall B's job to pick up after the mistakes of Stall G. Yes, it's "nice" but "nice" has consequences that aren't so-nice in the long term.

Eh? The OP didn’t ask for food! She asked for a 0.0019p fork.

you’re trying to compare apples with pears to prove your point, but comparing apples with pears never does prove a point.

So to answer you, no I wouldn’t go into Subway and ask for free lettuce (I wouldn’t go into a Subway to eat tbh, but anyway).

But I might go in and ask for a straw/cup/napkin, even -God forbid! - a fork if I needed one. And I’d offer to buy something to get it. But you know what? In my experience, most places are decent and will tell you it’s ok to have a straw/cup/napkin/fork/use the loo if you ask nicely!

No you're assuming that because Stall B weren't able to make themselves clear.

They may have had plenty of cutlery and just not seen the opportunity to make a good profit out of a drink. Maybe an inexperienced person who can't think for themselves.

It's not apples and oranges. It's equally penny cost and space taking stock.

Most places don't have very very lited storage space like stalls.

No, I’m not missing the point. I said in an earlier post that if running out of forks could be an issue they could have explained this in less than 10 seconds instead of giving a bald no.

Not in a Subway it won’t be!

But anyway, like I said, if stock and space are so tight they can’t give a plastic fork away, just say so with a sorry and a smile!

It's also good idea to do basic and control your stock so you don't run out of top needed items during lunch time🤷🏻
But everyone seems to have more issue with brazillian place not being apologetic and polite enough about not wanting/not being able to to pick other business's slack.

No that's just whatabouttery, the Greek stall is clearly far worse.
But I expect better standards from both.

Oh God.... are you always this literal?

No, they don’t have to explain their stock issues to random non-customers. But it won’t cost them to do so and may well increase goodwill to their business. And in
a broader sense, when people in a society are kind and helpful to each other, peoples’ mental health and general wellbeing increases. It’s better for all of us. It’s not compulsory, but it helps.

I mean, I don’t have to open doors for people, but I do. I didn’t have to give up my seat on the Tube to the man with crutches this evening, but I did as he clearly needed it more than I did (even though I was tired). I’m not trying to make out I’m anything special, many many people do small acts of kindness every day. How horrible would life be if nobody did?

WoahThereWoah · 02/12/2022 19:49

The Greek were in the wrong. Its not up to the other place. You say "only 2 plastic forks" but multiply that by many customers I would be pissed off at the Greek for sending you over.

Cheesuswithallama · 02/12/2022 19:50

In case the greeks are readin. No excuse for no stock during lunch (evening could be understandable after busy day)

Exactly. Why do people think a cold transactional society is acceptable? Just asking to be replaced by a machine, which would probably explain it better.
