To think £4 each for school nativity is too much

So state Infant school have finally after covid deigned to do a Christmas performance - and for some reason (not disclosed) are charging parents £4 per ticket to watch!

I wouldn't mind £1-2 per person but really should they be charging parents so much to attend a school performance? And are all schools doing this or just this one school who have a history of bizarre decisions.

I'm surprised that school wouldn't do it as a suggested donation rather than saying you have to pay this or you can't come. While I could pay it I think school have to be aware that while they may be struggling, lots of families are too.

Some people might

not ‘many’

Have you not heard we have a cost of living crisis?it must be nice to live in a,world where yourself and your contemporaries are not struggling for cash ,but it's not the same everywhere .

£4 is nothing

To you it’s nothing.

it’s not the same for everyone.

How is £4 genuinely nothing? That makes no sense at all..

It’s such an insignificant amount, thus really nothing

If you can’t find £4 to go to your kids school play there are far bigger issues at hand

Fucking hell. What is wrong with you? Lots of families have ‘bigger issues’ at the moment with the cost of living crisis. And it’s in time’s like this, that little things like seeing your children in their nativity can really feel like they matter. There’s not much joy in life for many people at the moment and you can’t even show a bit of kindness to people really struggling. It’s a sad thing that poorer people should expect to miss out on school plays and if you can’t see that I really do give up.

COL crisis isn’t being felt by many, or all.

Some.

many on here seem to forget it’s still the minority that are struggling with the current price increases

PuttingDownRoots · 02/12/2022 15:49

The school have to pay a license fee to put on the performance! Not saying that charging is right, but its more of a burden for smaller schools.

When DD was young they sold tea and (donated) cake.

There are many things poor people can’t do, why stop at nativity plays?

Either you are being deliberately goady or you are incredibly ignorant to how many people have to live

DivineHypertension · 02/12/2022 15:50

Because a nativity play is their child’s school event. Children want their parents there and the school wants parents to be invested in the school community and a play is a great way to encourage thar.

It’s very different from going to the theatre.

Engage your brain cells.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 02/12/2022 15:54

Well it's £4 and schools are struggling so they are just trying to raise a bit of cash. It should be a voluntary/suggested contribution though. Our school make money by selling the filmed version for £10 a pop, but totally free to go and watch it live.

UsingChangeofName · 02/12/2022 15:55

I don't think it is unreasonable.
I am pretty sure that all schools will subtly make exceptions for anyone who really can't find it, but many will happily pay that, and multiply that by all the people buying a ticket an it makes a nice contribution towards the costs of putting on the play, and hopefully puts a little bit in the coiffeurs to pay for something else for the children too.

x2boys · 02/12/2022 15:56

DivineHypertension · 02/12/2022 15:50

There are many things poor people can’t do, why stop at nativity plays?

Because it's not about the parents is it ,I mean let's face it nativity plays by a bunch of infant children is hardly a high class performance, but most kids want their parent/s there to see them perform.

IncessantNameChanger · 02/12/2022 15:56

Houseplantmad · 02/12/2022 14:57

Why don’t you ask? Sounds like they have budgetary pressures and need a contribution to cover the cost. Maybe they’ve had to pay staff outside their hours to stay for rehearsals etc.

As a school governor, I'd bet they aren't. I would not approve spending on that. Money is so tight unless it directly benefits the kids or stops the school falling down, it isn't money schools can spare..

x2boys · 02/12/2022 15:51

Again

some people

Not many

the issue is so many on here genuinely believe it’s an issue ‘many’ face. The minority are struggling.

Yourwan · 02/12/2022 15:57

Mmm, I'm in Ireland and I think €4 to see your kid in a play is nothing. My ds just had a performance(not nativity as his school isn't religious) and it was €15 a ticket and you were expected to buy raffle tickets at €2 each as well. We are used to paying for things around our kids education thoughsl so there tends to be a different mindset and don't have quite the same levels of poverty as you do. I think it is very sad that to some people 4 quid is 'a chunk of cash' though.

I think this is about right. Or £4 per family, possibly.

Neither are extra curricular activities, learning languages early, instrument lessons, swimming.

all of those cost money, aren’t for the parents but you don’t get a free ticket for being poor.

Desdem · 02/12/2022 15:59

That said, I've just got an email asking for £15 per ticket for the Christmas choir performance!

FFS How tone-deaf are you? Do you watch the News?
Do you know how many people have to choose between eating or putting on their heating?

For many people £4 is definitely too much.

Wow @DivineHypertension - empathy bypass. Children love seeing their parents at Navity plays. Should children of poor families not have this experience? Lovely divide that would make. Yummy mummies all waving at their darlings. Children from cold homes where food is scarce don't even get a familiar face in the audience.

Chimna · 02/12/2022 16:02

Ours charges £3 per ticket. I hadn't really considered it as I only have 1 school age but December is an expensive school month. We have nativities, parties, panto, secret shop, school raffle.

Yes, a small portion of the population.

What else do you think they should get for free?
