Going to A and E for tooth pain?

Legobla123 · 01/12/2022 19:50

I'm in the worst pain ever! I am unable to get a dentist at the minute and 2 months ago I was given a temporary root canal 4 days ago it started hurting again to got an emergency dental appointment and they gave me antibiotics these started to work and had no pain yesterday today however is horrendous and odly I'm having to put cold water on my tooth to take the pain away momentarily it has now got to a point the water isn't working and I'm dancing about in agony! Ive rang the emergency dentist back and got an appointment for 8:45am tomorrow but the thought of getting thru tonight with this pain is awful! I'm in work till 10pm would it be unreasonable for me to go to AandE when I finish would they be able to do anything or do I just not sleep all night and wait it out. Does anyone have any siggestions? Besides my antibiotics I've tried cocodamol Ibuprofen paracetamol orajel and clove oil and nothing it's not even taken the edge off :( if it wasn't a front tooth id have tied a piece of string to it it's that bad!

I ended up in a + e for toothache due to the fact I took to many paracetamol I just was in so much pain I wasn't counting right. They checked my blood for paracetamol damage came back fine. Sent me away with antibiotics and dihyrdacodine. It was bliss to finally have some pain relief

I have had lots of experience with dental pain and a&e over the years. I can't get the treatment I need on the NHS (sedation as unable to be numbed for root canal, and I do not want the tooth removed) and can't afford private treatment.
A&E have always given me analgesia. I've had abx when I've needed it too (although usually the wrong abx as let's face it, they aren't maxfax!). The best analgesia I have found is PR volterol. Gives a much longer relief. Gives time for the abx to kick in which is what finally calms it down. I now have a "just in case" script for metronidazole after having 3 abcesses in 8 weeks this summer. It started up again a couple of weeks ago, symptoms are identical each time (as soon as I can't eat on that tooth I know infection is on its way). I took the abx immediately and it did not escalate like it has all the other times where I'm an absolute mess in utter agony.
Last time I was vomiting from the pain it was so bad. I've headbutted windows in some kind of uncontrollable state before now. It has literally driven me to the edge of sanity.
Thank you A&E doctors (and nurse prescribers!) who have been so lovely to me over the years.

Ps. I'm not there regularly I promise! I also have a supply of pr volterol now from my last visit so I don't need to go back! It is amazing what prompy abx treatment and effective prompt analgesia can do.

I’m a doctor. You need either out of hours GP or A and ze to prescribe some very strong pain relief overnight.
this is an emergency and they will give you some morphine

That’s really interesting, because when I took my child to the walk in with exactly this issue, I was told by the nurse, it was illegal for them to treat him due to the fact that it was dental pain.

They literally had him on the floor sobbing in front of them wouldn’t prescribe antibiotics or painkillers.

My husband came off his bike head first at 11.30pm on the way back from work and no dentist available of any kind at that time where we are. Went to A&E in the nearest city for help and they said no, they do not deal with dental. They would not give any painkillers whatsoever and sent us away. It's the only time I have ever seen my husband cry in 20 years. They didn't give a flying fuck. Apparently, they get people coming into A&E trying to score painkillers. His smashed up teeth and face left them unmoved. We waited until the next morning and travelled 70- miles to the nearest dental hospital for help.

whataballbag · 02/12/2022 00:50

A&E/GP will do nothing for dental issues.

Just like you wouldn't go to a dentist for a broken leg.

Emergency dentist is the only option unfortunately

Sitdowncupoftea · 02/12/2022 01:31

If you phone 111 you may get fobbed off like I did. I was told not to go to A&E and could not get to see an emergency dentist for a day. I was in agony. I ignored advice went to A&E . Turned out I had a really serious issue due to surgery and had to see a maxiofacial surgeon. If you are in that much pain go straight to A&E .

nalabae · 02/12/2022 01:41

If 111 don’t help you down a bottle of alcohol.
I feel your pain I had a tooth ache before it’s horrible not for A&E though

Accident and emergency
tooth pain isn’t this.
there are people dying or seriously I’ll who cannot be seen because of people like you who go to A&E for tooth issues.
stop being so selfish so what if they found things, you weren’t going to die

Maybe you should have read my post. I had a serious issue which required a maxiofacial surgeon not just " toothpain". That is what A & E is for.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 02/12/2022 01:56

Get dissolvable cocodamol or codine.

Livinginanotherworld · 02/12/2022 01:58

Coconut Oil, seriously a teaspoon full and swill it around your tooth for as long as you can stand it, then spit it into a cup ( not down your sink) it absolutely works

Doodadoo · 02/12/2022 02:08

Lol, the night before last night I posted almost an identical thread!

I did the 111 online form and there is an option for a dentist there. One actually called me back in about 10 minutes and prescribed antibiotics Wednesday evening. I've picked them up this morning.

I'm now of a concoction of ibuprofen, codeine and paracetamol. Pain is unmerciful. I also never ever have headaches and despite being on the strongest possible dose of every painkiller, I have a whopping headache.

Doodadoo · 02/12/2022 02:08

My sympathies are with you. The devil himself is behind a toothache I think.

Doodadoo · 02/12/2022 02:10

I also look like a chipmunk gone wrong as my jaw is swollen.

Liquorish · 02/12/2022 02:32

You have my sympathies OP. It’s a different league of pain. It’s been a decade since I had this sort of toothache and it’s still the worst pain I’ve ever felt. Hope to never feel it that bad again. I was up all night switching frozen water bottles and Frubes in and out the freezer to numb the pain for a merciful few seconds.

I hope you manage to get some rest tonight to take your mind off it and your appointment will be here before you know it.

Tabitha888 · 02/12/2022 02:35

Op hope you got sorted and are in less pain x

Legobla123 · 02/12/2022 08:16

I do not know what happened as I cleaned my teeth so much yesterday with a manual toothbrush in work and used listerine, but about 2am I used the electric toothbrush and listerine and the pain randomly stopped and I didn't need water again, however I'm now sat in the car park of my dentist waiting till my appointment at 8:45 in pain again. I'm so scared to have a drink incase I become addicted to water again by the time I had fallen asleep last night I'd had over 6 litres of water yesterday I don't know how I didn't wet the bed, but thank you all so much for your advice and sympathy I've never known pain like it

OP posts:
RobinHumphries · 02/12/2022 08:36

Yeah hopefully they’ll manage to take the tooth out for you

YukoandHiro · 02/12/2022 20:38

How the appt go OP? What treatment did they offer?

olympicsrock · 03/12/2022 13:19

I’m amazed as someone who has been an A and E doctor that people have had such difficult getting hold of painkillers . We fully understood that people sometimes couldn’t access emergency dental help for a few days. Pain is pain after all whatever the cause and we would help with painkillers for a few days if needed.

@olympicsrock I was actually told it is illegal. Is that not correct ? I will make a complaint

CornishGem1975 · 03/12/2022 13:54

My GP wouldn't treat me for dental pain, they told me I needed to see a dentist for a prescription for painkillers.

That is absolutely not correct.

Illegal is also a weird way to describe it, and wrong. Dental issues aren't within most Dr's scope of practice (the range of issues you can treat) but pain absolutely is. Regardless of the cause.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 03/12/2022 14:01

Yabu. You’ll have a long wait in a&e for this.

@MrsMorton as I said further up in the thread they literally had my 12-year-old on the floor in front of them in agony, crying in pain, and they did nothing. If I had of left him in that state social services would’ve been called
