Worried about my DD - health sorry to post here

I have a lot of thoughts going through my head right now, worse case scenarios, please can someone tell me if I am over reacting ?

My DD is 3 and came down with a cold type thing a couple of weeks ago now. She had a little cough and runny nose and occasional fever. The fever wasn't constant and wasn't high. But once a day or so, she'd take herself off to have a lie down and then I measured it. 37.8-38ish. I gave Calpol and then it resolved. I sometimes would just let her sleep and then it resolved anyway. This went on for 6 days. I had her checked on the 5th day and no bacterial infection was found, so it was concluded that it must be viral. The doctors checked throat etc and all was fine.

On the 7th day there was no fever. It's now been 3-4 days with no fever and normal behaviour.

Then last night she woke up and was crying and I could tell that swallowing was painful, but she fell asleep again so I left her.

Then today, she started not playing and wanting to lie down - no fever. So I took her to the doctor again as I tonight maybe she has tonsillitis. Doctor said her tonsils look big and red, but no white spots. She also has a bit of a cough and tiny bit of a runny nose. The doctor said it looks viral again. No antibiotics given.

Now she's sleeping again, when usually she'd be awake. No fever though.

I'm concerned it's something more sinister, but doctor says it's quite common to catch viruses back to back.

I'm very worried. Thoughts ?

She sounds like she has a self-limiting illness.

tickticksnooze · 01/12/2022 19:11

What are you worried she has?

I don't know ! A million things. Something underlying, perhaps.

I think you are worrying she has leukaemia

If she doesn’t pick up in the next 7 days take her back to the gp and ask for a blood test, if only to put your mind at rest

Sounds like a 3 year old in winter. They do catch bugs back to back. It's a pain but it's what having a 3 year old is like. Last year my youngest was ill (fairly low level, low fever, cough, runny nose etc) almost constantly from October to march.

Helpwithdaughterpls · 01/12/2022 19:19

Totally normal for kids that age to get back to back viruses. Mine did, now at 8 and 12 they are very rarely ill. But at 3 it happpens all the time, honestly.

They get sick the first time so are a bit run down. Then they're vulnerable to another illness. I had a winter of this once with two little ones. One thing after another. It's relentless and worrying but they do get over them and spring arrives

underneaththeash · 01/12/2022 19:23

has she recently started nursery?
They do seem to be constantly ill when they do.

Make sure you're giving her vitamin D supplements. They need 10um daily at that age in the autumn/winter months.

My daughter is a lot older and is only now, after 3 weeks, (hopefully) getting over a cold virus that has alternated sore throat / ears / blocked sinus / horrendous cough. It's just normal I think.

Oh no. I hope she gets better soon !

I guess that whole, if the fever lasts for over 5 days, it's an issue thing, is worrying for me. It did stop and she does not seem to have one now. But she's just not feeling great and I hate seeing her like this. Sad

She started a while ago.. she's been much better with viruses since the summer. She's been getting over stuff much quicker. I guess not this time.

This! Once their immune systems are down they catch everything going. So it's probably been several different viral bugs? Has she started nursery in the last few months? They are absolute cess pools for bugs.

My son started with norovirus For a week , then his been ill on and off for 3/4 weeks now with 2 days inbetween of feeling better before he has a temp again. Doctor said that it happens alot and is normal. Before they are even better properly, they are catching something else.

yentirb · 01/12/2022 19:58

Op I'm the same with my kids, 3&1 and it's constant sickness. I'm forever on here asking for advice, it's hard this time of year. You've done the right thing getting her checked over x
