Your favorite Jane Eyre adaptation

I have probably seen all of them, it is one of those books I could read over and over again.
My favorite is Zelah Clarke, Timothy Dalton version, although I must admit I usually skip first few episodes and start watching the moment Jane comes to Thornfield.
What is your favorite adaptation?

Haha, just remembered that The Wise Children production was Wuthering Heights! It was still fantastic!

I was going to say! I love the NT Jane Eyre, and I loved the Wise Children Wuthering Heights, both making problematic books much better imo.

Timothy Dalton & Zelah Clarke definitely.

There are bits of the 2011 film that I love, and Mia Wasikowska is probably my best Jane, but not completely sold on Michael Fassbender.

Just can't stand Toby Stephens although I like Ruth Wilson as Jane. His massive nostrils take me right out of the story (shallow).

Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine

Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine

I am not a fan of that version, but I love that it's a great example of how period drama reflects the period it was made as much as the period it's dramatising.

(cf the insane frills and ringlets in 70s period drama)

I also hate Tony Stephens as Rochester, although I loved him in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall with Tara Fitzgerald.

Although that particular adaptation I hated the script. Book is perfect as it is and I hated what Sandy Welch did with the book.

I can't believe I'm the first one to say this... the 1996 version Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Hurt. It's 'the' version for me... probably because it's the first one I saw. All the love for the Ruth Wilson version has got me wanting to see that one again though.

It is the first I have seen, I read book after seeing that adaptation. It is still my second favorite.

Weirdly, Jane Eyre is a book I have only ever read and never seen on TV.

The Wide Sargasso Sea is also a good follow up.

ISaySteadyOn · 02/12/2022 20:06

Oh, Timothy Dalton all the way.

FiddleFigs · 02/12/2022 20:35

Jane Eyre is one of my faves - I’d watch any adaptation any day of the week! Charlotte Gainsbourgh is my favourite Jane; Ciarán Hinds Is my favourite Rochester. I don’t like Toby Stphens as Rochester at all, but love him in Tenant of Wildfel Hall.

Capturetotalelotion · 02/12/2022 20:56

Fassbender.

The BBC one with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. I watch it at least once a year.

Definitely this one :)

My people!
I have seen all except the national theatre production but I did catch an amazing stage version of Jane Eyre 2 years ago by the Blackeyed Theatre company.
I love something about every adaptation of my favourite book.
If I had to choose it would be the Ruth Wilson/Toby Stephens version but I do love something in them all.

Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine

Thank goodness, I thought I was the only one. It was the first adaptation of it I saw - I must have been about nine and my mother taped it off the TV for me. Adore it, and especially Peggy Ann Garner as young Jane.

I also loved the NT version and don't mind the Ruth Wilson one.

Charlotte Gainsborg is the best Jane for me. So beautifully plain. And her wonderful voice. ❤️ William Hurt was fabulous too & played Rochester just right. Ciaran Hinds Rochester was over the top moody and abusive.
