To ask how many Christians you know in real life?

In the census it said that now less than half of the UK identify as Christians. I am amazed it’s so high since personally I know a few elderly people and one family who are very born again/evangelical who are Christian in my real life. The vast majority of people I know are agnostic or atheist. I don’t have very strong views on religion. I’m Agnostic but I enjoy going to church on Christmas and Easter. I find there to be something comforting about the services but I can’t really describe myself as a Christian. Maybe I just live in a bubble and there are loads of religious people out there. It seems like only the very enthusiastic evangelical type of church seems to be growing and even then it’s quite small numbers. Aibu to ask if you know any Christians?

Just two and we're only friends since we've known each other for over 30 years.

I know far more who were damaged by the church but have managed to break free of their brain washing and indoctrination to some extent but the scars remain.

PurBal · 01/12/2022 16:07

Um, loads. Literally loads. In the last week I’ve interacted with 7 priests… but I’ll just text a friend now to make it 8 😂. No, I’m not ordained myself, yes I am a Christian.

polkadotdinosaur · 01/12/2022 16:08

Really very few. Probably know of more Muslims than Christians to be honest! I was christened but would describe myself as agnostic really.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 01/12/2022 16:08

People who are in more traditional branches - C of E or Catholic Churches, very few and all of them are in their late 50s or older.

More modern progressive churches? Not many but a handful and much younger.

BrownTableMat · 01/12/2022 16:08

Most of my social circle

TheFlis12345 · 01/12/2022 16:10

The majority of people I know would regard themselves as Christians on paper (myself included) even if they aren’t regular church goers. I was Christened, went to a CofE primary school and got married in a church.

PickyEaters · 01/12/2022 16:11

Define "Christian".

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 01/12/2022 16:12

Loads.
The majority of people I interact with regularly are Christians. But then the majority of people I interact with regularly are friends from Church.

Fluffygreenslippers · 01/12/2022 16:12

My neighbour is a christian and goes to church every Sunday.

dealornodeal1 · 01/12/2022 16:13

about 50% of people I mix with regularly.

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/12/2022 16:14

It doesn’t surprise me. Evangelical churches in my part of London are very well attended by e.g. the West African and Caribbean community. Central European particularly Polish immigration to the UK will have boosted Catholicism numbers.

Chasingsquirrels · 01/12/2022 16:15

2 that I know of.

  • My SIL, who I think has been a churchgoer all her life (as was late-MIL, late-DH wasn't). She is actively involved with her church.
  • a good friend, who was not raised in the church but became interested and began exploring options in her mid-30's and 20 years later goes to church regularly and is also involved I'm a related support group.
YorkshireMom · 01/12/2022 16:15

All my mums side of the family are very religious, so I know them (obviously) and a few people from their church. I don’t know many people my age that are Christian.

GunsNShips · 01/12/2022 16:15

Unless people were very vocal, how would you know?! I go to church so know quite a few but am
always surprised if I find out someone at work is too! And it only tends to be close colleagues who I would even discuss it with (in a what did you do at the weekend way - not an evangelical way!!)

FloresApparuerunt · 01/12/2022 16:15

Quite a few. I mean, apart from the people at church... but two of my five closest friends from uni; quite a few of my colleagues, in my own department and elsewhere; my HoD; my old HoD... (not a 'Christian' workplace, or anything - just how it is).

I think quite a few people are and just don't mention it for various reasons. That's been my experience at work and in various other areas, anyway (like my health visitor, oddly enough - had a WWJD keyring on her bag).

PacificallyRequested · 01/12/2022 16:15

Two of my best friends are very committed Christians. I've known them a long time (since we were kids) but I don't think they realise I'm an atheist and I'm not quite sure how to bring it up...

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 01/12/2022 16:15

I am married to one, although I'm an agnostic. If I assume people who marry in a Christian church are Christian, then lots of my work colleagues, but I don't generally ask people their religions.

HeddaGarbled · 01/12/2022 16:16

One close friend and several local acquaintances.

Poppitt58 · 01/12/2022 16:17

Loads, but maybe that’s because I go to a large church.

GrouchyKiwi · 01/12/2022 16:17

Most of the people I know, but I'm a Christian.

DH is not, but still most of the people he knows are too, because of his family and upbringing.

Ringmaster27 · 01/12/2022 16:17

I was raised in a devoutly Catholic family on my mums side, so there’s all of them 🤷🏻‍♀️😂
A good friend of mine attends our local Church of England church on the regular and is the director of their choir - she’s probably the only practising Christian in my age group that I know outside of my own family.

Frabbits · 01/12/2022 16:18

1 person I know actively goes to church. Another couple who probably believe in God but don't go to church. Everyone else is either completely indifferent to it or staunchly atheist.

skilpadde · 01/12/2022 16:18

The number of people who identify as Christian on the census is much higher than the number who are observably Christian from their actions (like actual church attendance).

I think the proportion of the population attending a Christian church was around 14% a few years ago, and has probably dropped lower since.

BlueBellIris · 01/12/2022 16:18

We have a real mix of friends of all religions and none. Some are christian and active church goers. I classify myself as a christian, but am not a regular church goer. I would say there's quite a few of us in that category. Kids were baptised. Go to church at Christmas. Got married in church.

A lot of my work colleagues are christian - practising catholics.

So yes, I do know christians.

For context I'm in the Home Counties, middle class and professional job.

Notsa · 01/12/2022 16:20

I don't know anyone who actively attends church however I'd imagine most of my friends would describe themselves as Christian as they have got married in church and christened their children.

I describe myself as atheist if asked
