What will it take for a mass peaceful protest to be made by this country on the obscene profits being made by energy companies. Watching the news this evening, people losing their homes, no food, no heating. The children and vulnerable suffering the most....ceo of energy company reporting his profits are x5 times and not even being embarrassed by this.

I remember the council tax objections that were loud and proud, now it's like a whimper despite the desperate nature of the current situation. The torys won't do anything, they're too busy shoving their back handers deep into their own pockets. How else does the country show the torys our discontent ?

I dont think we are allowed to protest are we?

It's not like we own our own oilfields and windfalls anyway don't the French own it all? Or at least rent it from us?

Theunamedcat · 01/12/2022 07:02

Wind farms fucks sake

Theunamedcat · 01/12/2022 07:03

I've been paying for green energy for years paying a premium because I believed the hype my bill will still increase massively like everyone else's and it shouldn't

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/12/2022 07:05

You do realise that you don't actually get that green energy you pay for don't you?

They are only able to make 1.9% profit on domestic energy prices. Thats what the OfGem cap is for. The profits are not generated from domestic energy.

You are confusing energy suppliers with energy producers.

Voting out this government in 2024, and in between making sure Tories lose their deposit in any by-election, is one thing that will get a message across.

Both Labour and Lib Dems (and probably other parties) will have a proper windfall tax on energy companies, for starters.

BordoisAgain · 01/12/2022 07:17

The wholesale price has gone up because gas prices have risen

The price rose, and then dropped and is now below the cost from this time last year.

This.. No more Tories...and I used to vote for them..

malificent7 · 01/12/2022 07:43

Well these tories are in bed with big business and probably make a mint with these energy companies so it's all in their interests. They are staunch capitalists so they are not hgoing to do anything about these companies.

We could of course stop voting Tory. I doubt that will happen. Us British love bending over and taking it up the arse then blaming immigrants, single mums, benefit claimants and the disabled so that we don't have to face up to our own views/ decisions.

The French would never tolerate this and would riot. This is why I admire them!

Going*

This may be a controversial view, but it's my view and is as valid as anyone else's but I think the reason we aren't seeing protests is because it doesn't affect the majority of people or even the majority of people who would usually go out and protest.

I'm not denying that the cost of everything including fuel has risen and that some people are suffering hardship BUT I don't think there are enough of these people to summon any sort of large protest group.

Maybe this will change in time, maybe it won't but at the moment I see people in dire straits on the BBC news and in the local news paper but they are the same people who have always struggled (I'm not saying this is right btw).

I'm not seeing large swathes of the population reduced to abject poverty so I think that is why we aren't seeing protests because not enough people are affected at the moment.

LlynTegid · 01/12/2022 08:56

@BloodyHellKen I think you make valid points. Protesting is not something those most affected are likely to take part in. Many of them are in non-unionised jobs, and could not afford the fares or time to get to any large scale march, for example.
