Cant book taxi to pick up ds from school age 14

So I obviously didn't think this through properly - ds is on crutches and has been missing school unless I am on a wfh day. School suggested a taxi. So today I dropped him to school on my way in - was a bit late, but was ok - and just rang a taxi to collect him but they said they can't take him as he is underage. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do? I guess I'll have to leave work to get him...

I know children do get dropped to and from school in taxis, does anyone know a way round this.

Taxi firms are usually booked up at school time, do you have a mum friend that you could call in a favour and collect him?

It’s to do with safeguarding for young people. They may have no drivers available with DBS checks etc.

No, it's not. All taxi drivers are DBS checked. It's a requirement of having the licence.

Untitledsquatboulder · 30/11/2022 14:33

That's annoying but where you really thinking it would be OK for him to miss weeks of school? Ds2 missed 4 weeks due to illness recently and trying to get him caught back up is a nightmare.

Tell the taxi company that he's 16? Then it's all sorted.

Onnabugeisha · 30/11/2022 14:49

Taxis that can take unaccompanied minors generally are more expensive and specialist because the driver has to have a full DBS check with frequent updates.

But maybe not safeguarding training?

Drivers that do school transport have the enhanced version.

dizzydizzydizzy · 30/11/2022 15:06

Uber? I have booked Ubers for my kids before. No issues.

gogohmm · 30/11/2022 15:44

The drivers have to be dbs, many taxi firms have school contracts so getting one this short notice would always be challenging.

vjg13 · 30/11/2022 15:47

Taxis that do school runs generally have an adult escort present in addition to the driver.

Msgrieves · 30/11/2022 15:51

Every taxi driver in this area is dbs checked each year as a condition of the licence. Have had to order one to pic ds1 up loads of times when he lost his bus ticket. Really odd none will take him.

JenniferBooth · 30/11/2022 16:01

@FancyANewID One of our taxi firms had fifty drivers pre lockdowns. Post lockdowns they have nineteen.

cornishcrusader · 30/11/2022 18:59

In the areas I have worked in as a foster carer there would only be an escort if the child had special needs and it was in their education plan. Otherwise it has just been the driver.

Are they temporary crutches? If so, aren't there any other parents that live vaguely in your direction that could give him a lift if it's only for a short term.

If they are non-temporary crutches, I unfortunately think you may have to re-organise your work hours and/or get creative with public transport. Or can he cycle?

Idiot.

Surprised you didn't also suggest a unicycle, or a skateboard.
