Aibu to think the M&S advent calendar was crap this year?

I was really disappointed. Last year it had lots of full size stuff and was amazing. I don’t think I will bother next year.

OP posts:

Yabu, I’m loving mine. Up to day 6 and trying to control myself.

Conkersareback · 30/11/2022 07:49

@poefaced so the poster last week also opened all of hers? But it still didn't achieve what she wanted and therefore, it wasn't "smart"?

I

The point is she was then able to exchange the advent calendar for a new one.

If she had waited to open an item each day, she would have realised an item was missing too late and then would not have been able to exchange it because the advent calendar would be sold out.

@NeedMoMoney yeah great fun, buying an advent calendar opening it all immediately and then whinging about it!

Best fun ever.

Must have made OP really really jolly and bright.

Quite!

Conkersareback · 30/11/2022 07:54

But @poefaced you said John Lewis couldn't replace the item initially?

Which was it?

Honestly, if you buy an "advent calendar" but don't trust the company to replace missing items during the time of advent, which it's designed for, then boycott them?

Otherwise, it's like say I've bought a turkey , I'll need to use it before Christmas to ensure it's nice?

poefaced · 30/11/2022 07:54

The people who have an issue with OP opening her own advent calendar that she’s paid for herself is hilarious. Some people need to grow up.

Sigh.

I said they couldn’t replace the ITEM. So they couldn’t give her the item that was missing in the calendar.

They can exchange the calendar itself.

Conkersareback · 30/11/2022 07:55

@poefaced did the poster then open all of the new calendar? I'd be concerned about RSI at this stage! Grin

Conkersareback · 30/11/2022 07:58

@poefaced as why couldn't they replace the CALENDAR on day 3 or whatever day the item was missing?

Surely JL, have the wherewithal to know that it's an ADVENT calendar and therefore is opened daily and missing items would be found on a day to day basis?

It's the whole point of the advent calendar, anyway things weren't missing, OP just doesn't like them!

@HowDoYouOwnDisorder I love the elasticiser, it makes my hair all swishy and shiny, happy to give all the unwanted elasticiser a loving home 😄

Fucking hell. Like dog with a bone that one.

We are entering the times when miserables come out of woodworks in full numbers and power eh

The OP can do as she wants. What she shouldn’t do is write about it here before anyone else has even started opening theirs. Like anyone telling you the much anticipated end of a TV series or football results.

TomTraubertsBlues · 30/11/2022 08:06

What's the point in an advent calendar if you open it all on day one?! (Actually, it's not even day one) If you're going to defeat the object of it, why not just use the money to buy something you want?

Well they don't have to read it.
The title doesn't give details except an opinion.
Half the mags have more info on calendars than this title!

Yes, I have opened every last bit of it already :-D

If you’re going to open every single thing in an advent calendar before it’s even the first day of December why wouldn’t you just buy the individual items you want or a gift set instead?

Who made you Mumsnet police?

She hasn't given any spoilers about the items.

Because is an item is missing on day 24, you may not be able to exchange the calendar because they'll be sold out.

Honestly, it's not difficult to comprehend.

And unless you open the calendar, you won't know if an item is missing.

@HowDoYouOwnDisorder I agree! It flummoxed me and long hair DD's.

Conkersareback · 30/11/2022 08:19

@poefaced why even buy the advent calendar then? Why not just go and buy a load of stuff in November? Then no missing items, no crap you don't want?

TomTraubertsBlues · 30/11/2022 08:06

Because it's a bargain and you know you'll like the stuff?

I do the opposite: I buy the M&S advent calendar and wrap it up as a present to myself on Christmas Day, because otherwise I feel childishly sad about having nothing physical to open. (I'll get grown-up presents of memberships and Theatre Tokens or whatever, but it's nice to have twenty five little boxes to open, and then paint my nails in front of the Strictly Xmas special).

HelloGooodBye · 30/11/2022 08:22

I bought the calendar for myself. I knew what was in it and the size of items so I'm baffled with all the threads on how disappointing the advent calendar is this year. I haven't opened it yet. Spoils the fun to open them all at once. There is no point in having full sized items for me as I like to try and discard. If it's a full sized item that I don't like I would feel guilty about throwing away. I wanted smaller sizes anyway so I can try them guilt free and then I can buy the full size if I so wish.

I don't know what the point was for you to buy the advent calendar, unless you gifted it, since you've opened all already and would have known what was inside before buying it. 🙄

Because it's once a year event, and much better value. You can get items worth £300 for £40.

It's a personal opinion. If she'd said it was great, would that be a spoiler?

HelloGooodBye · 30/11/2022 08:24

@MaryMollyPolly I quite agree. All the negative nancies threads about the M&S advent calendar are such a downer. They would have known what they were getting had they bothered to read. I'm exciting to open mine tomorrow :)
I'll just hide this (and other) threads that moan about it.
