To keep the refund? Amazon

TheOrigRights · 29/11/2022 20:58

Amazon have refunded 4 items I ordered nearly 4 weeks ago, received and have been using.
I can find no way to report this, either via email, via the web, via chat (god I hate those chatbots), via phone (it asked me to punch in a 3 digit code, but then hung up).
Since I cannot find a way to speak to a person or contact them to inform them of their mistake, shall I just keep the £. It's just over £50.

I don't feel particularly inclined to go round in loops of 'click here to contact us'.

A silk scarf made it all the way through the Amazon system from Italy to the town my DM lives in. It them showed as delivered and handed to recipient so I called Mum and nothing had been delivered. I got straight onto them.

At the first hint of 'well did you pocket a £150 scarf?' I pointed out I am also a seller on Amazon and hate that behaviour. I got the refund, and made plain it wasn't the sellers fault either and they should be reimbursed for their loss.

As a seller I find things quite random with the returns. I'm sure half of it isn't sent back (amazon hold my stock at their warehouses) and then I get a credit for my profit portion and they take the hit.

A few years ago I got refunded for a train ticket for a journey I had taken (only local, so not mega bucks). I had bought via the Trainline app, and when looking at the ticket I must have clicked on Request Refund by mistake. Either that, or the app had a bad day.

I did the online chat thing, and told them what had happened. They said there was nothing they could do about it. They had no way of me refunding the refund.

So I would say (always) be honest - but if they don’t provide a way for you to pay them back, keep the money with a clear conscience. Or maybe donate it to your local food or homeless charity.

Yesterday I got refund for an item I've been using but they thought hadn't been delivered. I used the chat bot and typed "agent". They told me to keep the refund.

Amazon once sent me a free £60 pair of walking boots 🙈

I kept them and nothing ever happened.

Nice. Was it a duplicate order or did they just randomly happen to fit and suit you?

This has happened to me twice with Amazon. I just kept it.

TheOrigRights · 30/11/2022 14:05

I called them back again this morning. The number I used yesterday (found via Google) didn't work, so I Googled again. Got a person who couldn't understand me so we were communicating almost entirely using the phonetic alphabet.

So that was tedious. He finally transferred me to the right department but I was on hold for so long I hung up.

No one can say I didn't try.

With mine I ordered something and the order was just cancelled for some reason. I reordered the same thing and it arrived. Both orders were refunded.

The second time I bought an expensive electronic item which failed within a couple of months. They had me send it off for repair. It was not repaired within a certain timescale so they refunded it. The repaired item then arrived a few days later.

I didn't feel bad about either because Amazon are taking over the world, they are not a struggling small business.

Im pretty much always in camp "keep it" in these kind of situations, especially with a corporate giant like Amazon. But I wouldn't spend it for a while incase they take it back out your account, it could just be a glitch. Unless you've received some sort of refund email as confirmation?

Don't you realise that most of the sellers on amazon are not corporate giants. They are thousands of small businesses are competing to earn a living by paying Amazon a heafty wedge for using their platform? It isn't Amazon who lose that money, its the companies who you bought from

NightOwl101 · 30/11/2022 14:14

I ordered a suitcase on prime for next day delivery, I waited in and it said sorry we didn't catch you we'll try again tomorrow, the next day they didn't turn up so I contacted their customer service and told them I wanted to cancel the order it was no longer of use to me so they said that's fine it's cancelled if it turns up keep it, no need to contact us.
4 days later I get a knock open the door and said suitcase has been left there

I just had a look at the refunded order. It was 4 items all stating 'fulfilled by Amazon' but (as you say) sold by individual businesses. They all say "Your parcel is being returned to Amazon for one of the following reasons: Damaged in-transit, carrier couldn't locate your address, or refused by the recipient."

But I also have "Delivered 8 November. Parcel was handed to resident." so it's not that it hasn't been tracked.

How does the refund process work then?
Amazon have initiated the refund process. Surely they'll only ask the businesses to refund them if they can return an actual product.

@TheOrigRights it was a duplicate!

I ordered one pair and two turned up - I only ever got charged for one (I triple checked) and when I contacted Amazon they just told me to keep them lol.

Saying it doesn't matter because a large company 'can afford it' isn't the whole picture. It is unlikely to be the fat cats who take the hit (which is then multiplied by the percentage of customers who do the same thing). It will more likely result in lower wages for ordinary workers, higher fees for small businesses selling through Amazon Marketplace, and an increase in costs to the end customer base as a whole.

zingally · 30/11/2022 16:34

Oh, I'd absolutely keep it! Maybe sit on it for a couple of weeks, but then spend it happily!

Amazon are a massive world-wide company. The onus isn't on you to help them keep their own house in order.

I have been quite willing to return it, but their customer service is appalling.

You've already spent more time and effort trying to rectify this than it warranted in the first place. Most people wouldn't have bothered at all with Amazon. Just forget about it!

mn29 · 30/11/2022 19:54

They’ve not made it easy for you to contact them. It’s their mistake. They don’t pay enough corp tax. They’re not a struggling independent business. Keep the money, it’s less than a drop in the ocean to them.

ShandyLear · 30/11/2022 22:59

Yes, I do understand that makes it harder. It was more a general comment, to the many who think any losses will hit (or be 'absorbed by') anyone who isn't on the bottom rung.

ShandyLear · 30/11/2022 23:05

They’re not a struggling* independent business.*

No, but many of the third party sellers certainly are.

Possiblynotever · 30/11/2022 23:25

Please, please keep it. Amazon have driven me insane over a phone that was about to be delivered. 40 days later it is still with them. Cannot find it at the same price anywhere- We are sorry for the inconvenience.
We can give you £5 as a gesture. Keep that money and cheer on me OP!
