To ask you to calm me down?! (Pregnancy related)

I am 11 weeks pregnant with my first. I'm 39 and we were going to attempt IVF, but a miracle happened. We are so happy.

I had my first midwife appointment last week and she was lovely. Took lots of blood and urine for tests.

Today, I got out of work and there's an email from a specialist midwife who has been trying to ring me, asking me to call her back for a 'telephone conversation and to offer me an appointment'.

It's too late to ring her back today, so it'll have to be tomorrow. But I am in pieces. I keep bursting into tears. Something has clearly gone wrong, hasn't it? I don't even want to tell DH. I'm just so sad!

Thanks, everyone. I'm apparently a sickle cell carrier, which is news to me. DH needs to go in and get tested. If he is, as well (which would require very poor luck, as it's very uncommon for his ethnicity), then we'll have to consider our next steps.

So, not great news, but not the catastrophe I feared.

🤞 I'm sure he'll be fine and all will be well.

This happened to us, not because I'm a carrier but because we used donor eggs they wanted my husband to have some additional tests to check for things, like sickle cell (because to them the genetic mother was an unknown quantity). It was slightly odd because they made the appointment through me, like his PA, and then rang me with the results, but it was all quite straightforward and easy enough, and all fine. If it's unlikely for his ethnic type, it's extremely unlikely he's also a carrier (DH was extremely unlikely as a carrier for anything but the NHS are quite belt and braces about this stuff). Congratulations on your pregnancy and best of luck x

How are you @NoLongerPembroke?

I'm excellent, thanks so much for asking! DH isn't a carrier, we found out last week. So relieved! 😁

Similar happened to me with my pregnancy with DD, which was following a MMC with various complications. I was very worried.

I went for the NT screening blood tests on a Friday and was told I wouldn't hear back if everything was ok, but if it wasn't they'd call me and make an appointment to discuss. Friday afternoon at about 4:30 I missed a call from the doctor asking me to book an appointment to "discuss my test results". I spent all weekend crying in bed thinking the worst.

Monday morning came, rang, and they wouldnt' tell me what it wasn, I had to talk to the doctor. Only when I had a complete breakdown on the phone would the receptionist divulge "it was to do with your iron levels". I was a bit anemic.

Silly system but my point is all was fine, and I am sure you will be too.
