To think no one would read this book?

My best friend has borderline personality disorder. She thinks she is going to do well with a book with this title -

Borderline personality disorder: what I wish I knew - a female perspective

Please tell her no one will be interested. She is unknown also.

I would not read it, and I say that as someone with BPD. All experiences with it is highly individual.

Maybe something like a blog would be more suitable, and accessible to get her point of view out there.

RambamThankyouMam · 29/11/2022 19:45

I would read it!

SequinsandStilettos · 29/11/2022 19:46

Just ask ffs
As it is, the title does exactly what it says on the tin but is a bit dry.
It would work as a sub-title but something punchier would be better as the main title. There are published authors on here. Just ask what it is you really want to ask!

Why wouldn't you read it? Even if it's an individual perspective, isn't it better that people are gaining awareness?

Well the subtitle should be 'What I wish I had known' because 'What I wish I knew' indicates that she doesn't know it now.
So pedant I may be but on that basis alone I would not expect it to be literate.

Yes. I totally agree with this.

MajesticWhine · 29/11/2022 19:48

I'm a psychologist. I would find this interesting, potentially.

You've asked for opinions, and that poster has given theirs. The responses on the thread so far have been mainly that people would read, or consider reading it - take that positive and run with it (or write with it!).

Don't start delving into why it might not be for everyone; you are never going to write something that's universally popular, even top best sellers aren't liked by everyone.

Lilabelle22 · 29/11/2022 19:50

My brother has bpd. I wouldn't read it as the title incinuates there is a difference between male and female versions of the illness and therfore I'd be wasting my time trying to get an insight. I very much misunderstand his ways and struggle to connect with him so I'd love some insight. Maybe it'd do better if it was more inclusive by in the foreword you mention its based on your experience a female.

He is also writing a novel. But also wants to be an artist. And a musician. But is currently unemployed. Is it a trait to have grande aspirations? Not a dig just curious.

SD1978 · 29/11/2022 19:51

Is this a no one reads my threads, I don't know why I bother type, post to get everyone to go and buy/ read your book? Because it really sounds like it is.........

SD1978 · 29/11/2022 19:52

So yes. It's your book and you're trying to get people to read it..... which has immediately out me off, and I'd assume others. But good luck regardless........

TellMeWhere · 29/11/2022 19:52

I'd probably remove the "what I wish I knew" bit.

peycho · 29/11/2022 19:46

People would gain awareness of one particular perspective. BPD has a huge range of symptoms and levels of severity. You can meet two people with it and they share no symptoms at all.

I think if you have a loved one with it, it is helpful to get their perspective on it, not a strangers. That is my opinion anyway.

Nobloodynamesiwant · 29/11/2022 19:54

Did you write it? What a weird thing to say and why would you want that? I think it's a good title and I would read it so you're wrong there. Hopefully you are the author testing the water if not you need to stop being a bitch to your poor friend.

peycho · 29/11/2022 19:55

What about - 'borderline personality disorder - what I wish I could understand'

OP posts:
CowPie · 29/11/2022 19:56

People read all kinds of stuff. Write it if you want to write it. You might want to check what the imaginary friend means by ‘doing well’, though.

CowPie · 29/11/2022 19:58

peycho · 29/11/2022 19:55

What about - 'borderline personality disorder - what I wish I could understand'

but if you don’t understand it, why are you writing a book about your condition? Why would someone pick up a book by someone who advertises their own ignorance in the title? Or do you mean ‘BPD — what I wish other people understood’?

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 29/11/2022 19:59

peycho · 29/11/2022 19:55

What about - 'borderline personality disorder - what I wish I could understand'

Do you mean that there are things you still don't know/understand, or do you mean there are things you know/understand now but you wish you'd known at a younger age?

Angelofthenortheast · 29/11/2022 20:01

Publishers often like to have a say on titles these days (they use things like algorithm data from Google and amazon to see what titles and words buyers are searching for currently).

What I'm saying is the is always a working title anyway.

and I think making a thread to bitch about your friend with BPD is low, low, low OP

Itstheimplication · 29/11/2022 20:01

Really irritated by the disingenuous nature of this thread. You should have just asked, OP.

Dreamsoffreedomjoyandpeace · 29/11/2022 20:02

OP would you be confident enough to start a YouTube channel? It would be a good way of promoting your book.

peycho · 29/11/2022 19:55

Hence why a blog is better. Because you pose a question, and people could comment and answer.
It would help you, and also other people.

Lemevoir · 29/11/2022 20:04

If your "best friend" wants to pitch to a publisher, then Jessica Kingsley publishes in this area.

And the title would most likely be discussed between the author and the editorial/marketing team.

I wouldn't read a book with that title, as it basically says in the title that the author has nothing to say, they know nothing.

ladygindiva · 29/11/2022 20:17

I might be interested in it. I'm also interested in why you wouldn't be supportive of a friend who had been through this and managed to write a book about it.
