We are hosting a New Years Buffet for 16 people (13 adults, 3 children)

This is my food plan:

Part bake rolls £4
Crackers £5
Cheese - cheddar, Brie, blue, Boursin, Wensleydale and cranberry £10
Chutney& cranberry sauce & apple sauce £4
Grapes, pomegranate, oranges £5
Slow cooker Gammon joint £10
Sausage rolls £3
pigs in blankets £5
pork pies £4

Sharing crisps £3
Cheese twists £1
Dips £2.50

Coleslaw £2.50
Potato salad £2.50
Nigellas festive cous cous £2.50

Puff pastry tarts - pesto and thinly sliced tomato, pizza (tomato purée, mozzarella and Italian herbs), caramelised onion and goats cheese:
3 x rolls puff pastry £4
Pesto £1
Tomatoes £1
Tomato purée £1
Mozzarella £2
Italian herbs £2
Canalised onion chutney £2
Goats cheese £2

Pudding
Slow cooker hot chocolate £6
With toppings - mini marshmallows, squirts cream, sprinkles, candy canes £5

Mince pies £2.50
Yule log (homemade) £5
Profiteroles £3
Fruit salad £10

Drinks
Selection soft drinks £10
Tea and coffee (will have in)

Total £120

£120 seems a lot, but yet the food doesn't seem excessive to me!

AIBU to spend this much? Or is this just the cost of things nowadays?

YABU as it’s extremely cheap! Less than £10 a head

lord help your guests

FlamingJingleBells · 30/11/2022 15:30

You can probably get a reduced cheese board after Christmas so I'd go for that. I think you need at least another cheese because 2 isn't enough.

There is also a large one for £16

I'm sure it will be lovely, but the thought of any family event without even a glass of wine is chilling for many of us!

Ha!! Love it!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 30/11/2022 16:01

Was meant to say under quote that I agree 🤣

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I've taken it all on board and changed my plans to:

Butchers - sliced gammon, beef and turkey for 16 people £35 (got quote this morning)

Bread (homemade) - 4 loaves £5
Baguettes (4) - £4

Cheddar £5
Brie £5

Egg mayo £5

Sauces - chutney, cranberry sauce, apple sauce, horseradish £5

Stuffing £1

Pigs in blankets £5
Chicken wings £5

Sharing crisps £5
Vegetable sticks - cucumber, carrot, peppers £5
Dips £2.50

Coleslaw £2.50
Potato salad £2.50
Nigellas festive cous cous £2.50

Pudding
Mince pies £4
Yule log (homemade) £5
Profiteroles £7.50
Selection fruits £10

Slow cooker hot chocolate £6
With toppings - mini marshmallows, squirts cream, sprinkles, candy canes £5 (I know a lot of people advised to get rid of this but I really think the kids will love it)

Selection soft drinks £10
Tea and coffee (will have in)

Paper plates, cups, cutlery and napkins £10

Total - £150

Slightly more expensive but I'm thinking a much better buffet.

To those who commented that they would be embarrassed to hold a party without providing alcohol, this is a mid-afternoon buffet on New Years Day, not a NYE celebration!

This sounds spot on to me! Enjoy your celebrations!

Renrute · 30/11/2022 16:07

Seems good value for a yum meal. Can I come🤔

TruckerBarbie · 30/11/2022 16:08

Defo had my mouth watering reading the list.

ConkerBonkers · 30/11/2022 16:11

Fuzzwuzz has some good suggestions. I think 120 is reasonable. However I would cut down on the sauces and chutneys, make your own caramelised onions for the tarts, it's easy, make your own coleslaw, potato salad and humous. Much tastier and higher quantities for less money. Also don't do the fruit salad, you already have fruit. And don't do the pigs in blankets, you're already doing sausage rolls. Sounds like a good menu! You could consider baking a camembert or two and serving alongside your par baked rolls. Also, homemade pizza and frittata always goes down well and is not expensive.

you haven’t got enough food. I regularly do Sunday lunches with 18+ people. I agree you need a ‘main course’ - cold meats or pies. Review the tarts - 3 rolls of puff pastry won’t go far with 16 ppl . You’re better off making something substantial like a pie or a joint of meat.

RunLolaRun102 · 30/11/2022 16:14

Lasagna is pretty good for a buffet style meal.

stuntbubbles · 30/11/2022 16:16

Updated menu looks good, OP! I’ll have a turkey, horseradish and stuffing sandwich with a side of pigs in blankets, coleslaw, potato salad and couscous. I’ll bring my own champagne.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 30/11/2022 16:17

I'm inexplicably irritated that Nigella's muscling in on the cous cous market.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 30/11/2022 16:20

Or champagne, to give it a theme.

Mardyface · 30/11/2022 16:45

People always post their buffet food and they never have pickled onions on but to my mind you can't have ANY sort of buffet without pickled onions. <gavel>

xogossipgirlxo · 30/11/2022 17:00

Momo8 · 29/11/2022 11:44

Just buy a chicken from aldi for £5. It'll feed all your guests, and you'll have enough left over to make soup for the week.

😂

This, but cornichons and pickled EGGS.

Gherkins and cheese are epic. 😎

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 30/11/2022 17:09

A buffet isn't a buffet without olives and pickles, in my book. 😀

TheChosenTwo · 30/11/2022 20:01

£150 is very cheap for a buffet lunch for 16 people, I’m more worried that it won’t be enough food but then I’d rather people left stuffed and uncomfortable in their jeans which suddenly feel too tight than peckish and a bit grumpy 😂

Greenpolkadot · 30/11/2022 20:52

High five to you op for making your own yule log

I think it's actually plenty when you think of how much snack food you can buy from a supermarket for a tenner. That's several packs of stuff, which is more than most people would eat. Presumably the women will eat less so should be plenty.

stuntbubbles · 30/11/2022 22:44

Presumably the women will eat less so should be plenty.
Why, are they visiting from the 1950s?

Well, I suppose you may be right in that lots of women nowadays seem to eat significantly more than their bodies require. Hence the obesity issue we have.
