Inspired by another thread, and being laid up on day 10 of a chesty virus which has put me on my arse, but feeling marginally better so…..

I’m in my 50s so completely out of the parenting / teen trend loop, but the thread about North Face coats took me right back to when I was about 14 and my Holy Grail was a pair of flat black patent ballet pumps with a bow…..

Oh how I begged and pleaded. My DM (rest her soul) was a stickler for rules and sensible footwear, and when we couldn’t get the right sort of sensible shoes one term she even took me to an “old lady” shoe shop for the most hideous pair of clunky T bar shoes I had ever seen…. Obviously very character building….. 🤣🙄

I remember my Step Dad came to pick me up from school when I was pursuing the patent pumps, and he gleefully reported he hadn’t seen anyone else wearing them so I was denied again…..

If memory serves my Nana saved the day in the end, causing minor friction, but I wore those shoes until they fell apart…..

So, back in the day, what was the thing that you absolutely had to have to win street cred among your peers?

Oh I also would have loved some Dr Martens, never got those so I'm making up for it now 😂

Lindy2 · 29/11/2022 14:43

I got the ballet shoes with a bow. Not for school though. They were going out wearing only. I loved them but they did fall off my feet quite a lot and had zero grips so we're very slippy.

What I really wanted but never got was a pair of tight satin trousers. Any colour would have done. I just loved the shinyness. They were the absolute height of fashion in our village. 😂

I always felt a bit hard done by because I never got them but reflecting now I had the ballet shoes, the frilly shirts, the batwing jumpers and pixie boots. I think my jealousy regarding the satins was a bit misplaced.

Oysterbabe · 29/11/2022 14:47

Kickers and a Nafnaf jacket. I had neither because we were poor.

MammaWeasel · 29/11/2022 14:52

Oh! And in primary school I longed for black patent leather t bar shoes like "everybody else" had. Never got them, mother didn't approve...

DuchessOfSausage · 29/11/2022 14:56

@MistyRock , the cornish pasty lookalikes were called Nature Treks IIRC.
The polyveldts were slightly less quirky looking but also not pretty

DuchessOfSausage · 29/11/2022 15:00

Bet you wish you had some

I remember being a young teen in the 70s and I used to long to own more than one skirt, one pair of jeans a few tops. My friend in the next street had loads of clothes and handbags and shoes and boots. Sometimes we would be in her room while she opened her wardrobe and drawers when deciding what to wear. To me, she had an unimaginable choice.

I know it's superficial, but that feeling of wanting a selection of pretty clothes and shoes/boots has never left me, and as an adult I own quite a lot of clothing now - some of it bought not because it suits me but because I wanted to possess such a pretty garment. Does that make me a hoarder? Can anyone else relate?

Oh yes, I can completely relate.
I too was a child of the 70s and had one of everything. I now have loads of clothes. I have an eBay addiction and buy pretty stuff just to own it and look at it. I may even stroke it on occasion. I'm that sad.

Coffeaddict · 29/11/2022 15:13

Skater boy vans
.....heads of to listen to some avril lavigne

Balloonsarethebest · 29/11/2022 15:13

Schott jackets and Jane Norman carrier bags as a school bag 🤣🤣 I had both but my god those jackets were bloody awful.

MistyRock · 29/11/2022 15:17

They are so vile. I just don't know how anyone could see them in a, shop and think, i'll have those!

I grew up in the 80s but I didn't have lots of stuff. One of four, hand me downs and obviously new stuff too. I also grew up feeling unattractive so now I buy lots of pretty dresses, ditsy floral, girly colours and lots and lots of make up. Regardless if I wear it all or not, it makes me incredibly happy just to own it. 😊

Reading this thread brings back memories! It was Nike Air trainers when I was at school and I never got those and never got any girly patent shoes when i was younger either as my feet were too wide....sensible shoes only! To be fair not many did have the trendy things and I have my mum to thank that as an adult I have good feet from wearing sensible shoes😅
Other things I longed for was a yoyo when sprite, coca cola yoyos were a thing, a troll, my little ponies and barbie dolls i never got these either. I was over the moon when I got a knock off my little pony from my nan.

OrangePomander · 29/11/2022 15:21

I had burgundy suede pixie boots, wore them to death!

user573010482911233445559002281818484 · 29/11/2022 15:21

Berghaus jacket, Morgan bag, Shelley boots or shoes, Jane Norman bag as your pe kit bag.

Mercurial123 · 29/11/2022 15:23

Chevignon trainers and a long viscose Ghost dress

MadisonAvenue · 29/11/2022 15:23

When I first started secondary school in 1980 it was a black Harrington jacket, everyone had them. I eventually got one.

Suede pixie boots, I had a gorgeous pair of navy ones.

Mid-80s. Anything Benetton. I had a rugby shirt and a couple of sweatshirts, and the duffle bags were essential.

Mummyratbag · 29/11/2022 15:27

Oh how could I have forgotten the satin trousers (as worn by the Nolans) ...? I wanted those badly at about 10 years old ...even at my skinniest I would have had to be shoe horned into those ...😳I had very little self awareness.

MakingNBaking · 29/11/2022 15:30

YY to the suede pixie boots. We were poor but I managed to acquire a burgundy pair for £6 from East Lane market.
Oh I loved those boots.

realsavagelike · 29/11/2022 15:31

@Jojoanna , my mum was a Clarks aficionado but what I wanted more than anything was high heels from Freeman Hardy Willis. Specifically these white kitten heel-ish ones with cutouts that a friend had. I think they were pretty popular - does anyone know the ones I mean?

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 29/11/2022 15:39

I'm one of the older members here and in the mid-late 60s we all aspired to owning what is known as a 'western jacket' - even M&S stock their own version now which isn't bad. Levis was the best with the little red tag on the front pocket and if it was bleached a paler blue, so it didn't look new that was even better. We couldn't afford such things.

I looked at the M&S version and part of me still wants one.

DuchessOfSausage · 29/11/2022 15:45

@MistyRock , they were new, and advertised on tv, so despite being ugly, we wanted them, and they were comfortable.

honeyfox · 29/11/2022 15:55

Omg the Papilloten! Had forgotten about them.

I wanted LA Gear runnerboots circa 1993 but got some own brand runners instead.

Secretloverofsparklystuff · 29/11/2022 16:15

Matchstick trainers or bk’s
pods for school
these were the shoes to have in our school

@5foot5

Ah I feel for you - so near and yet so far…..

I was never one of the cool kids …. I tried but economics were always against me - did become quite resourceful though.

Does anyone remember the trend for spiral perms and the DIY setting kits - was it Papilloten? I had really long hair and bought one of those kits with my holiday job money.

Spent hours spraying and twisting up my hair to sleep in it looking like Medusa for first day back at school ….. took it all out in the morning, combed my fingers through it and hello Crystal Tips 🤣

Brushed it through a bit but didn’t have time to wash it out ….. got to school trying to style it out and got told I looked like Pete Burns….. Still not sure if that was a win…… 🤣

I googled crystal tips, oh my! That reminds me of every YouTube vid I see of " how to get wavy hair" or "beach curls" ...

RGinaPhalange · 29/11/2022 16:30

mine was skousers! That’s right! Skirt worn over a pair of trousers!!!!!

Every single one of my friends had them and I desperately wanted them. My mum said they were ridiculous and I wasn’t allowed.

She wasn’t wrong 😂
