Tory MPs tell female Labour MP to shut up and sit down, and then complain to the speaker that they are being threatened when she says "Make me"

From Hansard hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2022-11-28/debates/22112832000002/PointsOfOrder

Sarah Owen (Luton North) (Lab)

Further to that point of order, Madam Deputy Speaker. I totally respect and fully take on board the advice from Mr Speaker’s office for conduct in this Chamber, but outside this place thousands of people are struggling to pay their mortgage or to afford one home, let alone 17, and they may have found that not declarable, but relevant. I would be grateful for your advice—[Interruption.]

I would be grateful for your advice—[Interruption.]

Madam Deputy Speaker

Order. The hon. Lady has the right to have her say—[Interruption.] Members should not challenge me.

Sarah Owen

I would be grateful, Madam Deputy Speaker, for your advice on how Members like me should respond when the hon. Member for Sedgefield (Paul Howell) tells me to “shut up” in this Chamber, where I speak for my constituents. Now he is attempting to shut me up online as well. What message does this send to women who want to be in politics when they see men like that? [Interruption.]

James Sunderland (Bracknell) (Con)

Sit down!

Sarah Owen

Do you want to tell me to sit down out there?

Madam Deputy Speaker

Order. I say to the hon. Gentleman that that is not how we want to behave.

Shaun Bailey (West Bromwich West) (Con)

Further to that point of order, Madam Deputy Speaker. The hon. Lady has just turned around and said, “Do you want to tell me to sit down out there?” To me, that sounds quite threatening. Is that in line with the code of conduct of Members of this House?

Madam Deputy Speaker

Well, I have to say to the hon. Gentleman that I found his conduct about 30 seconds ago not very courteous.

I think that the two hon. Members have put their points of view on record, and I suggest that we leave it at that. That was not a very good advert for how our Parliament should work, so we will move on.

In any other workplace - this sort of behaviour would not be tolerated. If someone told a colleague to shut up and sit down, there should be consequences.

"Challenging", the word he should have used was "challenging", that's what she was doing and that's what she should do IMO. "Threatening" is ludicrous. Threatening him with what? Was he afraid of her? Perhaps she should not have brought her sword into the chamber...

MPs sadly get away with a lot.

This is a pretty awful response from the Speaker. I would hope that it was taken up afterwards.

MPs speak to people like shit , it's all grandstanding - you only have to look at commons select committees and the way they speak. No other organisation would get away with it.

Anniegetyourgun · 29/11/2022 07:58

I also notice it appears that at least one MP was trying to overrule the Deputy Speaker who was, quite coincidentally of course, a woman. (I suppose it could have been a female MP doing that bit, but am fairly confident in assuming it wasn't.) Honestly, it's like a bunch of naughty schoolchildren pushing the teacher's boundaries.

I hope that someone has a word with him - I haven't seen the media rounds this morning to see if Tory MPs are defending this behaviour
