Does anyone really remember Christmas younger than 7yo?

DH &I were talking about our fave things from Christmas as a child, so we could carry on some traditions for our 2yo...

But I explained I couldn't really remember of any Christmas' before 7yo, he thought I was mad!

The first one I can remember was the last with my Gran, as we tried to make it quite special because of this, so I'm sure of what age I was. I then remember Christmas after that as I have vivid memories of visiting the cemetery every Christmas day etc.

I have no memories of opening presents with my DM before that as a little kid. Can't think of any particular presents from when I was little, but I know I did have some. I also can't really remember any feelings about the magic of Santa etc, although I did have an older brother who told me quite young. Aibu thinking that's fairly normal to not remember your early Christmases?

For reference, I'm 31/ a 90s kid.

I remember being around 3 in 1966. Waking up to lots of toys and a pillowcase full of presents which seemed huge at the time. Running to my parents room saying ‘ someone’s left a big mess on my bed ‘ ( all the presents ). I remember a doll and high chair and beautiful books And selection boxes of course Also remember my grandmother’s table groaning with food … I especially loved the gravy boat and all the tureens with delicious mashed potatoes, roast potatoes and a huge turkey

I can certainly remember Christmas from 3 or 4. That would be mid 1960s as I am 60 now . I remember waking up on Christmas morning and seeing a massive Teddy bear sat on the rocking horse. I would have been 3 and a half for that I think.

I also remember we would all pile in to Mum and Dad's bed while we opened our presents. I got to open mine first because I was the youngest by a long way so my elder sisters wanted to watch me. Then they would open theirs. But one year they had to sit back to back because they were so close in age that most of the relatives had bought them identical gifts so it was spoiling the surprise if they could see what the other one was getting.

Chillyoptimistic · 29/11/2022 00:13

I remember mine from about 3/4.
I know it was from that age because we just moved into my great grandparents flat after my parents divorce.

theDudesmummy · 29/11/2022 00:16

I remember the baby in the cot being put in my room at Christmas. My brother was born just before Christmas when I was 3. I don't remember anything else about that Christmas though.

Starlitexpress · 29/11/2022 00:17

I remember going to see santa when I was 4 because it was eventful..... but christmas that year, nope. Really from 6 or 7 I can remember though the memories do blur into 1 big christmas the further I am from the actual events!

Mamai90 · 29/11/2022 00:25

I remember Christmas when from when I was 3 because I got a cabbage patch doll and immediately gave it to my sister. I pretty much remember every Christmas from then though some years are jumbled. I have a freakishly good long term memory though and I'm brilliant at remembering dates so I'll never miss a birthday. I often remember more than my sister who is 2.5 years older. My short term memory is shit though.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 29/11/2022 00:43

as others have said I have a jumble of early Christmas memories, walking in the snow with a brand new fake fur snood, one set of grandparents' house done up like a Christmas grotto, the other filled with aunts, uncles, cousins and food. Travelling on Christmas Day to spend Christmas with family, some of the special presents, Christmas carolling in the town square, Christmas Eve veg prep with carols from kings, midnight mass

Such lovely Christmas memories being shared! And I love the random kids brains that take things like the wooly tights or gravy boats to be core memories❤

I'm not sure if it's because I have a crap memory in general, or because I had a crap childhood that I don't have memories from those years, and maybe because I don't have any pics or videos that would jog those memories maybe?

I genuinely can't think of anything Christmas related from before age 7! I do remember other things like my preschool playgroup and starting primary (the girl I queued behind had hair down to her bum and it sometimes tickled my nose when it was windy) so it's not as if I don't have any memories from my younger years, and they aren't in pictures either? Interesting!

I have a vague memory and would have been around four or five.

My dad was in the Navy and was at sea, in those days, late 50s, they were away for quite some time, so my Christmas memory, vague though it is, was my dad not being at home and my mum and nan being there with my younger brother watching us open our presents very early Christmas morning.

OMG12 · 29/11/2022 19:13

I can remember christmases from 3years old. I have quite a few memories from before that time but not Christmas, including climbing out of my cot and crawling to my parents room and my dad bringing a rabbit home and pulling myself up to look into the cardboard box.

my DH can hardly remember anything before 10 so its. Hit and miss what people remember

GelPens1 · 29/11/2022 19:15

I remember many Christmases before I was 7. I remember my nativity play in Early Years and I was one of the youngest in my year.

Fluffygreenslippers · 29/11/2022 19:15

I remember Christmas when I was 5. I was bought a dolls house. I also remember the following year, I noticed that presents from santa & presents from everyone else had the same paper. I asked my mum ‘santas not real, is he?’ She said no he’s not. I went and told everyone at school & made them cry.

Haycorns4Piglet · 29/11/2022 19:42

I have few but very clear memories of random specific things from being 15 months or so, but Christmas Day itself, I think 5 nearly 6 is the earliest I remember. But lots of solid Christmas memories from there til 12 where it gets all hazy again! I always feel a bit 'hmmm' at those soppy quotes about how you don't remember the presents you opened but the love you felt instead. I remember absolutely loads of my presents, where I was when I opened them how I felt etc!

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 29/11/2022 19:45

I clearly remember Christmas 1977, when I was three Xmas Smile .

AuntieMarys · 29/11/2022 19:45

Yes I remember from age 4...gifts I had and who from.
This is 58 years ago.
I remember getting up at 4am Xmas morning and my dad allowing me to open 1 present downstairs, while he had a mug of tea, clearly to help with his hangover

CaptainCallisto · 29/11/2022 19:48

I remember setting fire to my fringe processing up the aisle with Sunday school during the Christingle service when I was 4. Oddly, it's the look on my mum's face as she frantically tried to gesture to me to pat my head that I remember, rather than actually having my fringe burning.

I also, very clearly, remember our next door neighbour's toddler staying with us last minute on Christmas Eve through to Boxing Day, as his mum had come down with appendicitis. I must have been 5 or 6.

Like others, I've got really clear pictures in my mind of moments/feelings, and just remember feeling really loved and happy 😊

georgarina · 29/11/2022 19:48

I can remember bits and pieces from about 4
We always had the same traditions ie decorating the gingerbread house
I loved it

BeanCounterBabe · 29/11/2022 19:54

I have memories back to two years old. Being an army brat and moving frequently I can place memories really well. First Christmas related memories are of making Christmas crafts and then a trip to the panto with my mum and all the play school children and mummies. I was aged 4.

First Christmas Day I can remember I was aged 5. I got a Britain’s farm set. We were at my GPs. I was disappointed as I wanted a doll (my dad was old fashioned but very gender neutral with toys and clothes).

I thought early memories were normal but DH barely remembers anything before he was about 8.

JustLyra · 29/11/2022 20:13

I have a few. Some horrible ones so they stick.

Two really lovely ones from age 4 and 6.

HowCanIPayItForward · 29/11/2022 20:19

My first clear Christmas memory is just before I turned 4. We were living with my nan so I was sharing a room with my parents. I woke really early (and excitedly woke my parents to tell them FC had been. They let me choose one stocking present to open and it was a tub of red play-doh. I was then sent back to bed for a couple of hours before we got up to open the rest. I actually remember quite a few presents from that year but thrle big one was a red bike decorated in red tinsel!

MargaretThursday · 29/11/2022 20:25

I can remember from 3yo. My brother was born when I was 4yo so I can date them.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 30/11/2022 02:44

I remember from about 4

VashtaNerada · 30/11/2022 03:18

Long term memory is so interesting! Mine is really good - my first memories are from when I was less than a year old (although as time goes on, they’re starting to become more of a memory-of-a-memory but they’re still there). I have a very clear memory of being told there’s no Father Christmas by an older sibling when I was four, playing in the snow aged two, a new year’s eve party aged three, as well as memories of opening specific presents and sneaking into siblings’ rooms aged 3-6. My most vivid memories are probably from 6+ though.

lemmein · 30/11/2022 06:05

I remember walking the dog with my stepdad at night, looking up in the sky to see if I could see Santa. We moved from that house just before I turned 5 so must've been about 4 then.

Like a pp said, I can remember lots of 'bits' about Xmas pre-7 but they're jumbled up memories.

ShippingNews · 30/11/2022 06:14

I remember getting a dolls pram, and how exciting that was. There is a pic of me with said pram, and it's obvious that I'm about 3-4, so that's my early Christmas memory.
