Woman flying along with newborn in the front

Can’t get this out of my head.
Yesterday, Dh, Dd and I were on the motorway and a woman joining onto our lane on the left, nearly crashed into us. She didn’t slow down or stop, so Dh had to slow right down, she came flying past and we saw she was talking/arguing? On her phone, gesticulating madly and that there was a buggy in the back and baby in a baby seat in the passenger seat.
We were in such shock at first at the way she was driving and thought she’d crash into us, then saw, she was on the phone, then the baby. It was one of those tiny smart cars, so no seats in the back, is this legal?
Dh was beeping loudly at her and said after that he wanted to follow her (we had to turn off)
Not sure regarding laws (we’re in another country) but surely this isn’t legal, cannot get over how she could drive like that with a baby in the car, such a strange sight to see.

Car seats can go in the front passenger seat in the UK. The airbag needs to be switched off though.

Who could think I’m being unreasonable about this 🙈it really shocked me

@Whatnextarghhhhhh So you can put a baby in the front? I had no idea…

OP posts:
Onnabugeisha · 28/11/2022 16:21

Yes some countries you

  • can drive and use your mobile phone
  • put the baby in car seat in the front passenger seat so long as you have disabled the airbag.
Bullshot · 28/11/2022 16:21

If her car only has seats in the front then of course the baby would have to go in the front seat?

DP shouldn't have been beeping at her - that would only serve to make the driver less able to concentrate.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/11/2022 16:21

The fact that she was distracted by her phone whilst driving does sound like an issue.

NauseousNancy · 28/11/2022 16:22

The bad driving and the phone use are illegal, yes.

having a baby in the front seat isn’t so long as the air bag is off if rear facing.

Fluffygreenslippers · 28/11/2022 16:22

Man, don’t go to india. I was shocked by the amount of women I saw holding babies in the back of cars, no car seat whatsoever.

Ithastobeacbeebiesday · 28/11/2022 16:23

I suppose it’s not as much about the car seat being there as it being there and her utterly crazy speeding along whilst arguing on her phone. If Dh hadn’t slowed right down which he may not have been able to do as easily if there were cars behind him, she would’ve crashed into us, injuring/killing a small child and baby, alongside us all

OP posts:
Whataretheodds · 28/11/2022 16:23

Is it legal to speed? No
Is it legal to drive dangerously? No
Is it legal to drive while holding your phone? No

Is it possible that were was some kind of emergency - maybe the child was sick and trying to get it to hospital? Yes
Is it possible she was just being a dick? Yes.

What are you looking for here?

I haven’t voted because can’t tell if she did anything illegal without knowing the country you saw this in.

Doormatnomore · 28/11/2022 16:23

its certainly not safe being distracted on a mobile but surely it depends what country you’re actually in if it’s illegal? ??

It's MN, so I assume it's because you're being unreasonable asking whether or not it's legal and withholding which country you're in - which would be relevant information for the (rhetorical?) question.

Damnautocorrect · 28/11/2022 16:23

obviously Pre rear facing toddler seats, mine loved my smart car. They used to pretend they were driving.

Ithastobeacbeebiesday · 28/11/2022 16:24

@Fluffygreenslippers I know, I’ve been, worst place and Morocco, I mean there are worst places and I’ve seen worse…maybe because I was younger then and without a child, she really was driving so fast like a mad person

Why post on AIBU then lol?
Anyway I agree it's shocking how some people drive with no regards to themselves, their passengers or other road users

Damnautocorrect · 28/11/2022 16:26

Smarts are actually incredibly safe as the tridion safety cell is ball shaped and very strong.

phone use, and driving too fast clearly makes her a twat. Not the smart though

Rumplestrumpet · 28/11/2022 16:26

Well if she was driving dangerously of course Shea being unreasonable. And using phone whilst driving is irresponsible and dangerous.

Carseat fine.

But your husband shouldn't be beeping her, how does that help?! Surely it just increases the risk of an accident?!

Onnabugeisha · 28/11/2022 16:26

Some countries and regions of countries you can’t go up an on ramp and stop, you’re also told don’t slow down. It’s an acceleration lane to get up to speed. The traffic already on the motorway are supposed to adjust their speed or move ove a lane in order to let you merge on.

Ithastobeacbeebiesday · 28/11/2022 16:27

I’m just posting as I was shocked I suppose, but judging by the replies I’m being over the top maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️It’s illegal to use a mobile whilst driving where I am, I assumed was everywhere, but I honestly didn’t know you could put the baby in the front. Just the way she was driving and thinking about that baby

OP posts:
PrincessPoodle · 28/11/2022 16:28

Your husband was being unreasonable and could have caused an accident. If he cared about the child he'd have called the police not beeped! He just cared about being right, not about the child

Ithastobeacbeebiesday · 28/11/2022 16:29

@Onnabugeisha She has a line she can stop at if she can’t join onto the motorway, she didn’t even look, just sped right into it, no slowing or even looking over to see cars..us!

That's what we did.
We have a van.
Not all vehicles have back seats.

ItsBritneyBitch45 · 28/11/2022 16:29

Well really and truly what do you want any of us to do about it? I’m guessing you didn’t get her license plate so even if she was completely in the wrong and breaking the law, it’s not like you have any of her details to report her to someone right?

Ithastobeacbeebiesday · 28/11/2022 16:31

@PrincessPoodle Are you serious? He beeped as she was flying right along without slowing or stopping and nearly crashed into the side of our car, it was hard for him to slow right down. It was a very scary experience and natural to beep someone, she could’ve easily killed us all
How could we call the police, we couldn’t even get the number plate etc, the speed she went at
