Radio from Lidl

Mr McD bought a radio from Lidl in August 2020. The warranty is three years. On the back of the radio it states it was manufactured in November 2019, we are now November 2022, it’s three years old now.

Mr McD is the Lidl lover - not me - he’s bought a kettle for £10 - I admit it’s good - actually an array of household goodies - including a microwave as a gift for someone.

Weve lost the receipt for the radio, but because it was manufactured three years ago this month, we thought Lidls would help us. Their customer service dept to my surprise were very helpful, I thought we will be writing this one off, but as I say Lidls we’re helpful and they would get the manufacturers to contact us get it sorted.

The manufacturers did email, basically to say no and that they don’t believe the photos and the warranty on our radio run out six months ago.

Am I being unreasonable, we have lost the receipt, but basically they are accusing us of lying, the sticker is on the radio saying when it was manufactured which in all honesty takes it to another level.

Personally, I’m grateful, because MrMcD will no longer be salivating in the “middle of Lidl”, but Silvercrests behaviour has me a tad rattled!!

It’s a Lidl radio. Chuck it and buy a new one.

How much did you pay for it? I know this is a matter of principle, but the cost would influence the lengths to which I'd go over this.

It was either £30 or £35

It was a nice Lidl radio though 🤣, you know when you buy something and you’re not sure - in this case Mr McD did well

I'm feeling a bit goady today, so how about this:

YABU as you should not be trying to claim on a warranty just because it's about to expire, when as far as anyone knows there is nothing actually wrong with the radio.

Unless you are about to drip feed that there is something wrong with the radio, in which case YABU for not mentioning this in the OP.

An update.

Mr McD phoned Lidl yesterday afternoon, asked them not to hang up on him if he starts swearing, but he’s been giving the run around!

He reiterated that one of the cashiers in Lidl told him to call Customer Services as Lidls write the numbers down when it comes into the warehouse. We also felt comfortable calling because it states that it was manufactured in November 2019 it was only three years old, and it wouldn’t hit the shops for a while. So why is Silvercrest saying that the warranty on our radio is out in 2.5 years of manufacture.

The Lidl Customer Service Phone Op, told him he will read the file, and check the numbers. The radio was not even been offered for sale in the stores until the 29th December 2019, so all of our radio models are under guarantee.

His managers will get onto it ASAP, and sort the issue out.

Will let you all know when it is

LIDL are BU for trying to fob you off with the manufacturer (is this how it works in Germany perhaps?) - your contract is with LIDL, it's up to them. I had this issue with them over a faulty barbecue once - I suspect they are trying to apply German consumer law here.

You’re probably right, but we will get there eventually.

It doesn’t matter if he’s been given “the runaround”. The person on the end of the phone is not to blame and doesn’t need to hear abuse.

Of course they would hang up if he swore at them. Nobody deserves to be abused just for answering the phone.

He needs to keep his temper in check. Especially over an outdated unnecessary cheap device.

ScroogeMcDuckling · 29/11/2022 20:40

You are totally right that no one goes to work to be on the receiving end of rudeness, I was stunned how abusive some of the people on here about a bus driver.

if you knew my husband, you would know that he doesn’t swear very often, but by saying what he said right at the beginning of the conversation what he said, made them look into the system and see that he has been given the runaround, and as someone else has pointed out on here, it’s not the manufacturers job to sort this out, it is the place where it was purchased, and they take it up with the manufacturer.

it has been sorted, and I don’t think anyone has ever achieved a result by being rude. Clearly my husband isn’t rude or disrespectful.
