To rearrange my dentist appointment for today

dontcrushthemlynn · 28/11/2022 08:33

I have over active bladder syndrome triggered largely by certain foods and drinks which make me pee an awful lot. I forgot I had my appt today and had the trigger foods thurs/fri/sat. I'm anxious that the triggers could mean that I'm peeing a lot today and I won't be able to make it through the appt (I'm due to have work done today, could be 15 mins or could be 40 mins. I don't know).
WIBU to rearrange today ? My anxiety will be v high today due to this. I'll be peeing through this alone and mind- over- matter will mean it will feel like i need to go even if I don't need to

You could ask, but at my dentist you’d be charged for the appointment if you cancel at short notice.

dontcrushthemlynn · 28/11/2022 08:39

Fortunately, mine doesn't charge

Do they have toilets for customer use? I am sure they can stop the treatment and let you go to the loo if you need to unless it is something more complex but 15-40 minutes doesn't really sound like it. Or wear a tenalady?

Will the trigger foods still have an impact from Saturday?

Threadkillacilla · 28/11/2022 08:40

Wear a pad and empty bladder right before you go in, it'll be fine.

TheUsualChaos · 28/11/2022 08:50

Drink minimal fluids beforehand and when they call you in, say oh can I just go to the loo first. They won't mind honestly. Wear a pad as above.

Out of interest, what foods do you find are the triggers?

dontcrushthemlynn · 28/11/2022 08:59

@TheUsualChaos bananas, anything citrus inc orange juice, possibly MSG, tomatoes, caffeine, paprika. The main thing is tomatoes. And I had them Friday night when my neighbour cooked me dinner. I ate to be polite

My dentist has a toilet that the patients can use.

Could you explain to the dentist that you might need a quick toilet break at some point during the appointment because of your bladder problem?

Plumbear2 · 28/11/2022 09:08

Is it NHS? At mine if you don't give more than 24 hours notice you can be struck off their list.

Plumbear2 · 28/11/2022 09:45

Also if you cancel today it dosent give the dentist time to full the appointment with another patient. This is why they insist on 24 hours notice or you will be struck off. Have you seen the amount of people who are on 5 year waiting lists just to be seen?

NashvilleQueen · 28/11/2022 09:47

Does it really have an effect on your bladder so long after eating them?!

dontcrushthemlynn · 28/11/2022 10:30

@NashvilleQueen yes it can do unfortunately. It's a horrible thing to have as I have to make sure I'm careful with what I eat and plan foods around social plans ie long journey coming up means I won't touch anything that triggers. And I love OJ and ketchup in things like bacon rolls

You should expect to be charged if it's non NHS. I'm self employed (not a dentist!) and if someone cancels on the day I can't replace that income. They almost certainly have a toilet on the premises you can use.

Isobel201 · 28/11/2022 11:06

I have incontinence issues but I just wear a pad all the time anyway. I've also got a dentist appointment this evening, but like others say, make sure you don't drink anything that triggers today, go to the toilet just before the appointment, and you'll be fine.

dontcrushthemlynn · 28/11/2022 14:34

I made the appointment, even if I did sit through the whole appt time needing the loo! it makes little difference going beforehand, the OAB makes me go very frequently when triggered and it's not just a dribble.

I should just avoid all triggers just in case.

I'd have just worn a continence pad and gone anyway.

Good lass, I'm sure it was a bit of an ordeal but at least you know you won't end up without dental issues and no dentist.
well done.

Roystonv · 28/11/2022 14:44

DH had an appt today - private, they rang to cancel owing to staff illness. Next appt Sept 2023! So might be worth checking with them if you are hoping to see them soon.

CryCeratops · 28/11/2022 14:58

Glad you managed it OP.
