to find reading stories very boring

I do it because the kids love it and it's educational and fosters a love of reading and all that but honestly - I find little kids' stories insanely dull and am sorely tempted to skip words/pages just to get it over with.

Am I terrible?

not at all.

i hate bedtime reading.

i end up reading the same drivvel over and over and its bores me intently.

its a bit like washing up. hate it but it needs doing

bubblagirl · 31/01/2008 15:05

i love reading kids stories i love the silliness and the fact my ds loves me reading them

i actually look forward to story time

Habbibu · 31/01/2008 15:06

Depends on the story. I tend to pick ones I find funny - partic favourites being ones by Mini Grey, or Click Clack Moo, Cows That Type. Others drive me bonkers (like Hairy MacLairy) and are unfortunately lost on a regular basis.

georgedontdothat · 31/01/2008 15:09

I love it if it's a good story and not farkin sheltie the horse or worse rainbow fairies

Boco · 31/01/2008 15:11

Oh you just need to get some good ones. I agree that there are dozens of totally dull stories and it can be tedious, but there are also some fantastic ones. We read 'lost and found' last night - it's lovely.

Habbibu · 31/01/2008 15:12

Oh, yes, Boco - lost and found is just brilliant! How To Catch A Star also good, but not as much as Lost and Found.

bundle · 31/01/2008 15:13

i do funny voices for all the characters, passes the time

lovecat · 31/01/2008 15:13

Definitely depends on the book - I can read the Gruffalo and Gruffalo's child over and over - they're fab! (and for my own amusement I make the mouse talk like Kenneth Williams, the fox like Leslie Phillips and the Gruffalo like Brian Blessed, but that's my own private sadness...)

However, I draw the line at dd's other current favourite, Learn Colours With Noddy - I will KILL whoever it was who gave that to her for Christmas!

lovecat · 31/01/2008 15:14

bundle, x-posted re. voices!

tigana · 31/01/2008 15:14

Some of ds books make me want to die. Soooo dull.
He is currently obsessed with a lift the flap book about diggers which he got for christmas...no story...jsut "here are some diggers in a field" then "here are some diggers in a quarry" I tried hiding it but he instigated full on search throughout whole bedroom, at bedtime,so had to "find" it!

Also hate paddington book.

Like gruffalos child though, and Alfie. Am also content to trundle through Hairy McLairy/Slinky Malinki et al

tigana · 31/01/2008 15:16

HAs anyone else noticed that some childrens book use really bad english?
One of ds's in particular changes tense half way throughm then changes back again. Not a cheapy crappy one either.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 31/01/2008 15:20

Ah now I liked Alfie at first but I find it palls on the 100000th reading.

There are books that will stand up to any number of readings, though. The Tiger Who Came To Tea still makes me snigger as I note the look of amused scepticism on Daddy's face and speculate over what he thinks really happened (see past Mumsnet thread).

DH hates reading but he can't say no and always ends up reading many, many stories each night, the poor man.

saadia · 31/01/2008 15:26

Some of the Thomas ones are so long-winded I actually skip sentences and whole pages, ds2 poor thing has no idea what's going on but he still wants to hear them.

Most other stories I quite enjoy and some I really love.

But I don't think YABU, they are aimed at children it's hardly surprising if they sometimes bore us to tears.

gingemum · 01/02/2008 00:04

Have a look at www.love2read.co.uk my 4 year old ds was given one of these books by his Godmum for Xmas and now reads it himself!
