Is competitive underheating the new competitive undereating?

I don’t mean people saying they’re trying to minimise it because of the cost, more people insisting that 17 degrees is actually sweltering and they don’t see why anyone could possibly need more. Is it unfair to assume they’re the same people who insist they’re stuffed after a small salad?

They're the ones who say that tumble dryers are evil and insist they can get their washing dry hanging it on a washing line for a couple of hours on a drizzly November afternoon.

fruitsaladsweets · 28/11/2022 07:14

It's intriguing how you're not allowed to complain about the cold in the winter, but in Summer the moans of 'It's soooooooo hot!!! I can't stand it!' are standard.

User38899953 · 28/11/2022 07:16

It is strange isn't it. I have my heating on and tumble dryer is being used.

I tried to not put the heating on, but mould started collecting on the windowsills. I will cut back on other things in order to keep a warm house.

crumbsneverdid · 28/11/2022 07:17

My mum lives in a retirement apartment and they are all at it - and I'll add can all afford to keep the heating on as much as they like. I sent her an article on the dangers of a cold house, especially when suffering from respiratory disease; thankfully she has the means and isn't silly enough to play along.

Yes.
Although I find there is mN superiority in all areas.
If a new mum is struggling with a baby and toddler they'll be someone who coped with 6 children under 10 and their husband worked 20 hours a day.
If someone complained their neighbour played loud music at 5.30am, they'll be posters who'll say they've been up hours by then and it's not early!
Oh and the people who regularly drive for 6 hours with no breaks for a wee or food, usually with toddlers who seemingly don't need anything either!!

loislovesstewie · 28/11/2022 07:39

Every year when I see people competing about not using the heating ,I think of the 4 Yorkshiremen sketch. I have a bit of a laugh about it TBH.

Sparklingbrook · 28/11/2022 07:40

I got called selfish for having two showers a day on the competitive not showering thread.

It feels like some of MN is sitting in a freezing cold house, unwashed, in their filthy Oodie because doing more than one load of laundry a week is very bad, probably eating a MN magic chicken with a massive salad.

Summersdreaming · 28/11/2022 07:41

I'm one of the ones that enjoyed the bit of warm weather the North West had this year, it was lovely (to me).

I'm being more careful with the heating but still have an electric heater in my bedroom, and a hot water bottle every night. I watch TV with my dressing gown and socks on and take them off just before I go to sleep. I know I'm on the extreme end of cold, and this country's weather was not made for me.

I'd take a second job to pay the heating bill if it comes to it.

Charlize43 · 28/11/2022 07:45

Especially weird as so many MNs claim to be earning 150K pa. What do they do with all their money then?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/11/2022 07:48

Nah.

We were bitching about the summer when others were bitching about us and how could we possibly be hot when it's a mere 39 Celsius in the bedroom overnight and we must all weigh about 34 stone to be uncomfortable.

We eat.

I think it's just because energy use is the main topic of conversation more now, everyone is worried about rising costs.

Our annual heating row generally starts in September when DH declares he's 'freezing' whilst I am still 'boiling'. We have been having the same row every year for nearly 40yrs now and it never gets resolved.

I never have the heating above 16°, I don't own a coat and if I'm wearing a cardigan outside then it's probably below zero. DH is 'comfortable' (but not warm) at 21° even if he is inside, all windows closed, and fully dressed with 3 layers. I just don't understand it, 21° would be considered a nice summers day if it was June and we were going out, how can it be cold at that temp indoors? It makes no sense to me.

So when I'm home alone it's heating off and windows open then I put it on at 18° and close the windows when he's home. I can usually keep it at that for a couple of hours, then he turns it up for a bit, then I turn it to 16° overnight.

You don’t own a coat? Sure

an example right here of what the OP is talking about, everyone

I’m a female post menopausal,

I FEEL HOT 🥵

ok I’m not having a competition 😂😂😂😂😂😬

hope you realise how grumpy I am in my head if some suggests turning the heating up in my house

RampantIvy · 28/11/2022 08:06

I’m a female post menopausal,

I'm post menopausal, but feel the cold.

I stayed with DD in her unheated flat in the North East this weekend, and I was utterly miserable. I had to drink my tea quickly before it went cold. Hot food was cold before the plate was half empty and I was so cold that I didn't sleep well. When we went out yesterday morning the outside was the same temperature as the inside.

This is no way to live.

OoooohMatron · 28/11/2022 08:15

Always been the same on MN. Each to their own but sitting at home with 3 jumpers on sounds fucking miserable to me and I don't know why anyone would unless they genuinely couldn't afford the heating.

Lampan · 28/11/2022 08:15

What strikes me time and again on these threads is that people don’t seem to understand that the placement of the thermostat makes a huge difference. So if your thermostat is in a cold hallway, 16 may be enough (once the hallway reaches 16 the other rooms will be much warmer than that), and vice versa.

Heronwatcher · 28/11/2022 08:16

What gets me is that it’s just so STUPID to compare different houses at the same temp, and I can’t for the life of me work out how people don’t realise this before they post their idiotic smug comments. A thermostat set to 18 in a well insulated carpeted bungalow in a terrace in a relatively mild area will produce a very different result to the same set temperature in a Victorian vicarage on a hill in Northumberland with no insulation, hard floors, single glazed windows and a localised gale blowing under the back door. WHY DO PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND THIS!!

ichundich · 28/11/2022 08:19

Competitive underheating has always been a favourite on MN as is competitive overwashing (laundry) and claiming to be 'working class'.

On the showering thread it seemed to be competitive under washing.
So clean clothes on dirty bodies presumably. 😂

loislovesstewie · 28/11/2022 08:23

Being able to wash you whole body with a slightly damp flannel and 2 teaspoons of lukewarm water.

But only every other week.

gogohmm · 28/11/2022 08:25

Remember 1. Houses vary a lot eg ours is a modern eco home so is designed to be very energy efficient.

  1. We have all been brought up in different circumstances and those of us who are a bit older (40+) often remember no upstairs heating, I personally have always set my thermostat at 18.
  1. Some of us are menopausal! Stuff the rest of the house Grin
loislovesstewie · 28/11/2022 08:25

As often as that? You cannot be serious!

PinkSyCo · 28/11/2022 08:26

No. I love my grub but am perfectly comfortable with thermostat set at between 16-18. What I find interesting is how angry people get at people who don’t have their thermostats set at 20+. You should be grateful to us for helping to make resources last longer!

loislovesstewie · 28/11/2022 08:27

I remember no central heating at all in my childhood home, which is why the heating goes on now. It was bloody miserable.
