My husband is hardly ever ill. We're talking never been in hospital, only been to the doc a handful of times in the 20 years we've been together and generally hardly ever gets a sniffle.

He's come home from work today saying he's freezing, then said he was boiling, aches all over, shivering, feels slightly sick, aversion to light and has a headache. Checked his temp which was 40 degrees and have given him Paracetamol and he's gone to sleep (he never take tablets etc hence me giving them to him, he doesn't need mothering!(

He said all this came on suddenly about 3pm and before that he felt absolutely fine and had his lunch which was just a basic marmite wrap and crisps and fruit so can't be food poisoning etc.

He said it doesn't feel like covid as he's had that before.

I'm really worried as Paracetamol hasn't brought his temp down but he is asleep as seems OK at the moment. His mum says I should take him to a&e or call 111. AIBU to let him sleep?

YABU wake him up and call 111
YANBU leave him be he's ok

Reading these threads it seems everyone has lost the ability and common sense to practice self care before ringng for help

Yes he has symptoms that could indicate several different illnesses but honestly, it's flu season, he hasn't been vaccinated, his temp has come down with paracetamol and all his symptoms are common features of pyrexia which is a normal feature of flu/virus

Paracetamol, fluids, rest and reassess tomorrow

I deal with people every day ringing 999 because they have a fever - a fever is not an emergency and can, 99% of the time be perfectly managed at home with self care

💯

My DD2 had sepsis at 9 weeks. She was irritable and sleepy only. I'm really not sure how or why you are comparing a tiny baby who can't speak or respond to a grown arse man with a temperature??

I'm pointing out that there aren't always the well known symptoms that people are advised to look for. Just because he's a grown man, doesn't mean he can self diagnose a serious illness 🙄

Coldhouseflowers · 27/11/2022 22:35

@Thekormachameleon unless you are medically trained you shouldn’t be giving this advice regardless of how many calls you take !

Takemyhand123 · 27/11/2022 22:36

I had these exact symptoms this week, down to the sore throat beforehand for a few days, and it was the flu. A couple of nights of sweating and shivering and almost back to normal. My wife had it too.

Potato28 · 27/11/2022 22:44

Meningitis is screaming out to me.

Regardless if he can touch his chin to his chest

Swapshopped · 27/11/2022 22:46

Dh and I have had something similar this week. Not an aversion to light, more of a headache but the rest of the symptoms are very similar. Honestly not felt as poorly as I did on Thursday in a very long time. DS has actually vomited and said his legs feel like they have no bones- it’s exactly that! Negative Covid tests all round but it’s been worse than Covid for me.

I'm here literally just coming through the over side of this too. Had a bit of a stuffy nose, then fever and aches, spent 2 days in bed sweating and sleeping and I've just got a bit of a cough now but still no appetite.

Beetlebum1981 · 27/11/2022 20:45

The aversion to light would worry me - I'd call 111 to be on the safe side.

Me too. Sign of meningitis?

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 27/11/2022 23:05

For the poster dismissing people jumping to the worst case. It's important to rule out sepsis given the death rates from it. My husband had sepsis with these symptoms but also signs of infection from an insect bite on his leg. He developed full blown pleurisy as well as the sepsis. Fun times.

More likely to be classic flu unless you have good reason to suspect otherwise. Lots of it going around and Oz had a v bad season apparently which is why we've all been told to get vaccinated.

Cherryblossoms85 · 27/11/2022 23:09

Did everyone's common sense crawl in a hole and die??

Potato28 · 27/11/2022 23:13

And by that, you mean @Cherryblossoms85 ?

Meg43 · 27/11/2022 23:17

I would get checked out. Could be strep, which is bacterial and can lead to sepsis. It needs a specific blood test though. Mine only got picked up because I insisted on the blood tests. The doctor was convinced it was viral until she got the results back and rang to say I had sepsis and need strong antibiotics as quickly as possible. Mine came on exactly as you described and suddenly. It can be nasty.

Freddosforall · 27/11/2022 23:33

He's got the flu. He's sleeping it off and is starting to be a bit better. He could stand a phone light. Let the poor guy sleep. He does not want to spend 6 hours in A&E...

Thousands of people get the flu every year. Yes, it's hard to tell the difference between flu and sepsis, and that's one of the reasons sepsis is so deadly, that does not mean the 1000s of people with flu should rush off to the hospital. The biggest sign is if someone is going downhill, but that's not happening here.

Greyfox · 27/11/2022 23:54

My colleague had those same symptoms on his honeymoon. They were staying in a hotel. He told his wife it was flu and he just wanted to sleep it off. She noticed one tiny spot and saved his life by calling the on-call doctor - not the UK obviously - who arrived shortly afterwards and diagnosed meningitis on the spot. My colleague lapsed into a coma before the antibiotics arrived and had a long stay in hospital. So it's not all man flu.

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 27/11/2022 23:54

It's a flu bug, I had all the same symptoms on Monday, after 3 days I'm starting to feel better, my husband had it before that and my son brought it home from school. Its spreading like wildfire all over apparently. I've had my flu jab a month ago too 🙄 all I wanted to do for the first couple of days was sleep. I'm just left with a lousy cough now. Hope he feels better soon.

It's also a covid and flu symptom

It’s a red flag meningitis symptom. Especially when paired with headaches and fevers.

Id want him seen at A&E.

And I’m saying that as someone whose close relative had those 3 symptoms, we thought it was flu. They died from meningitis two days later, never had any spots or rash.

The degree of bull and scare mongering on this thread from non medically trained people is staggering. Next time you can't get into A+E or GP just come and read this..

alexdgr8 · 28/11/2022 00:19

OP, how's things ?

Wallawallakoala · 28/11/2022 00:39

I had flu last week (confirmed with swab) ended up in hospital in isolation and felt daft when they said it was flu but they suspected sepsis or meningitis it’s truly awful I hope he’s better soon and you are ok!

Exactly this.

many responses on this thread are ridiculous and show why exactly why the NHS is in the state it is.

Wallawallakoala · 28/11/2022 01:30

hmm, I got sent to a&e after being assessed by GP so I don’t always think it’s the individual’s fault and I think in some cases there are people who are genuinely very ill and it can escalate quickly therefore need to be seen.
